Title: Brian's leftovers
Post by: punkinhead on August 30, 2010, 09:58:17 PM
As we (the Smiley Smilers) love to over analyze Brian's music, I was thinking about how many songs he has to choose from to borrow the tune and riffs from. Now of course, GIOMH comes to mind on how he used his leftovers, just re-record (somewhat) some older tunes not used. But what about us, the fans? What songs could we suggest Brian use on his 'next' album (not saying he should use leftovers for 'new material') but who knows Brian best? THE HARDCORE FANS! We've listened to TLOS and BWRG and recognized/analyzed tunes and musical references throughout. So, I'm gonna list some songs that I think Brian should use a either the tune, a riff, or re-record the whole song (with better results than GIOMH, but the techniques of that recording is another topic for another thread.) Basically, these are songs that were never released on an official album, not that it's stopped Brian from borrowing tunes/riffs from officially released songs.  ;D  (yet a small bit of songs have been officially used, but not by Brian, by himself, as opposed to side projects.)

Black Widow/Let's Do it Again
Heavenly Lovers (really good tune)
Thank Him
Lonely Days
Water Builds Up (re-record)
Snowflakes (re-record with Carnie/Wendy for a Christmas download this year)
I'm Broke (maybe re-record)
Christine/Living Doll/Barbie
Oh Lord
Market Place
Christmas Time
That Special Feeling (re-record)
It's Not Easy Being Me
I Do/Do you Have any Regrets?
Cool Cool Guy section from Rio Grand Outtakes
Someone To Love (maybe re-record)
What Rock and Roll Can Do
Stevie
Mona Kani (wouldn't be the first time he borrowed a tune from Denny  ;))
Chain Reaction of Love
Mary Anne
Country Feeling
Slightly American Music (re-record maybe)
I'm Begging You Please (re-record)
I Sleep Alone
It's Trying to Say
Elbow 63
Life is For the Living
Out in the Country
Walking On Water
Number One/Visions (I know it was officially released at one point)
Marilyn Rovell
Frankie Avalon
Goin' To the Beach
Sweetie/Love Ya
Some Sweet Day
Go Away Boy
Rings
You're Still a Mystery
Soulful Old Man Shunshine
You're Riding on a Music High (never heard it, but I'm sure it's a great tune)
Ruby Baby (re-record for rock and roll album, he really loves and rocks this tune, from oink oink to his cut from the 70s)
Everybody Wants to Live
YOu're as Cool as Cool can Be   ;)
Silly Walls
We Gotta Groove
Boogie's Back in Town (I read where this was performed in the 80s, but also read somewhere else it was written in 76-77; I've heard the concert version, are the written years true?)
Do Ya?
Lines
She's Just Out to Get Ya
Brian/Thank You (Sweet Insanity tune, just use riff or tune; otherwise, those lyrics shall never be uttered by anyone else)

Feel free to add

When it said "Brian's leftovers", it made me think "what if some beloved musician in the far future was to record a Brian Wilson covers album with new songs made up of unfinished Brian Wilson songs?"

I'll be that person if Brian lends me the tapes of unfinished songs  ;)

Noel Gallagher Reimagines Wilson?

I think the only thing scarier than the possibility of "Noel Gallagher Reimagines Wilson" would have to be "Liam Gallagher Reimagines Wilson!"

"Be here in the morning"    (Aahhhhhh)

"Be here in the evening"     (Aahhhhhh)

"Be here here and make my life SHHHHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNE!!!!!!!!!!!!"

"Market Place" already sorta became "Message Man" (which deserves an official release, dammit!).  One of the most Brian-y songs to come down the pike in a long time, imo.

Count me as another guy who would really like to hear "Lonely Days" as a full tune.

Yeah ditto Lonely Days.

How about Lines? No sure if you've mentioned it already but I'd love to hear those chords recycled. Stevie I would LOVE to hear a new version of. I'm Beggin You Please is ripe for reworking too I reckon.

Hilarious.  Too bad there wasn't a 70's Wilson Brother's Wibbling Rivarly tape.

The person who covered Lines on the Caroline Now! tribute made the song really legit to me...wish Brian would pick it back up

If allmusic is anything to go by, the string arrangements for 20/20 were done by one Van McCoy.

What's the story on Do Ya and She's just Out to get you?

Did Spring record both of these?
And was it Mike Love with Celebration to do one of the two?

I feel like SJOTGY was proposed for the MIU album, but I can't remember.
Did Brian produce either of them?

Spring recorded both and there is a version with Mike Love on lead and I think BB's on it, It's been awhile since I've heard it.

I would love to hear a re-recorded "You're Still a Mystery". Perhaps with all of the Beach Boys. How awkward would it be if he re-recorded Marilyn Rovell, though?

I'm gonna cry if "You're Still A Mystery" is not on the new Beach Boys album. Weren't two later Brian solo attempts made at that song later? What gives? It's pretty nice, the only thing I always found "meh" about it was the backing vocal of "GOTTA FIND THE KEY NOW", which were at least amusing, if ill-fitting for the song.

You could argue that the Help Me, Rhonda Session with Murray counts there (obviously not 70's or brotehrs, but ahwell  ;D )

I think he should steal the melody from "Smart Girls" and cleverly hide it in a backing vocal pad.  Different lyrics, etc. but it would be so cool if he could slip that in.  Not necessarily because it's great or anything, just because it would be clever.

Yep. Joe Thomas said during promo work for Imagination that they had cut the song, although they retitled it as "It's Happening Again." It also seems to have been slated as a 14th song for GIOMH, but was ultimately pulled off the album at the last minute.

If it missed the cut on GIOMH.... it couldn't have been good.

True only if one assumes those doing the cutting had good judgment at the time!

I would hazard it could have been cut cause they thought it could be better.  I really dig the chorus on that song, maybe new verses would help it see release
