Title: Dennis's hand injury
Post by: Jay on August 28, 2010, 07:08:38 PM
I wasn't sure where to put this topic. It might belong in the media section.  This might seem like a dumb question, but are there any pictures with a reasonably decent view  of Dennis's hand injury from the early 1970's? Or did he keep it bandaged up? I was just thinking it's weird that in all the pictures I've seen from the early 70's, I've never seen a picture of his hand from when he cut it.

The wound may have healed quickly so a bandage might not have been needed for very long, however the tendons etc can take a long time to heal.

The reason I mention this is my dad sliced his palm many years ago (early 60s) and he was told he would not play the guitar again but as it turned out, the playing of the guitar was the best therapy for his hand and it was 100% fine after a year or so.

The best visual evidence of the injury that I've seen is in the opening sequence to the Good Vibrations From Central Park film...keep in mind I mean the full version as it orig. aired on TV in '71. The show opens with a montage of images of people coming to the concert, roadies getting the equipment set-up, and you see a few of the concert's artists milling about in backstage or pre-concert candid settings. There's a quick glimpse of Dennis just sitting there and his hand, wrist and part of his forearm are wrapped in a very thick bandage ...to the eye it actually looks more like a cast. This is really the most blatant view of the damage I can recall seeing, and since the injury happened fairly close to that concert date, its probably as heavily bandaged as it ever was.

I might be making this up, but i believe a similar thing also happened to Bob Dylan....

And yet, purely from memory, I don't recall seeing that strapping in any of the easily accessible footage of that gig. So, either my memory is wrong, or he took some of it off.

I vote for the first option.

Not making this up...reportedly, Bob sliced his hand or forearm real good while sculpting some metal artwork.

I can't say that I've meticulously viewed the footage with this in mind...but my instinct tells me that only the undamaged hand is seen in the concert footage. For sure, he's only playing keys with one hand on Its About Time.

Thinking of this and the alternative replacement to Brian thread...Can you imagine how much more hip the Beach Boys would have been if Dennis had his injured hand replaced with a laser pointer?

No, it should've been replaced with an extremely durable drumstick!

Was just thinking about having read this yesterday, and was thinking of pulling the complete show to view myself.  Also, trying to jog my memory of that day, as I do seem to recall him ripping the cast/bandage off before singing "Forever" for sure.  He often removed casts & bandages himself; in fact, I can't remember him ever going back to a doctor to have them removed.
Remember, after almost cutting his foot in half, on that broken water bottle, they told him he'd never have use of his toes again, and about 2 months later he started wiggling away with them...  I swear, he was lizard-like; had he have cut a limb off, I was certain a new one would have grown back!

Just had me a look... and no, can't see any bandages - cause you don't see his right hand at all.  ;D  Looks like he's still got the hospital name-tag on his left wrist, though.

This may be covered in BB books but any link between his hand injury, piano playing ability and a increase in song writing from 71 on? Would we have got some of those great Dennis tunes if he hadn't injured his hand?

My guess is Dennis was scratching his ass when this shot was taken.

I think the negative is reversed on that one.

I'm thinking the color shot is reversed. That said, first time I've ever seen one like that.

That is very nice not to take credit for someone else's work.  Admirable, even!  :kiss

Not on your life...I meant it...People "liberate" stuff from other sources all the time and let people assume that they found it...

It was a compliment...that is a rare picture of Hunky Dunky Dennis with his hand wrapped as such...

I have never seen it.  He looks fabulous!
