See the two pictures Steve Desper took on the back steps of Brian's Bellagio Rd. house during the Surf's Up sessions. Bruce is sitting down in the front in the group picture. I have a big poster of it framed behind glass. Never bothered to post a picture here before, otherwise I would do it. 

Also on the cover of Rolling Stone, 10/28/71, there's a picture of Bruce with a stash. Also, in Leif's book there's a picture of Bruce writing on a blackboard, "We're here for the money". On the Surf's Up liners and on the Live In London front cover Bruce has a.......hey what kinda guy wants a picture of Bruce with a mustache, eh?

Which is more rare - a photo of Bruce with a mustache or a (post 1966) photo of Mike without a hat?

Does it seem to anybody else that Steve Fataar is chewing on one of Mike's fingers and that Mike doesn't seem to care?

Last published photo I've seen of Mike sans chapeau was his wedding to Jacquelyne, April 1994... I think. I know he wore a baseball cap fro Brian's wedding.

When was that from? Carl looks like he's growing  bit of a beard, but it's WAY too early for it to be permanent judging by how Al looks, unless he got a haircut.

Two things...

1)Bruce with a moustache is :lol-worthy...looks like Chester the Molester.
2) I don't know which is funnier about that compilation...the fact they used a (then) recent picture for old material (Hite Morgan recordings? Seriously?!) or the fact that Mike looks like he fell asleep.

I'm sure there was a picture of Mike on the band jet within the last 5 years. It hasn't grown back!

Mike was interviewed for The Beatles Revolution doc in 1999/2000 and he did not wear a hat or headgear of any kind. It's on youtube.

The photos that appeared in Rave in 68 are from the BBs short trip to the UK in Dec 1967-after playing the Unicef benefit.  The striped shirt shot-with them being interviewed is from Cleveland Oct 7 1967-last tour in stripes by the way.  Bruce sported a stache off and on from fall 67 to 1972.  He had one in Sept 68 when they played at Purdue but had shaved it off by the time they filmed the I Can Hear Music promo in early Oct 68. Then again by 1970-through 72 off and on.

The Beach Boys are officially hairier than ZZ Top.

The number of truly terrible BB pics is staggering!

Wasn't Al the clean-living one? He looks as though he's halfway through a year of bong hits on this one!

This must have been part of a photo session circa 1971-perhaps Reprise-that was included in a set of large (27x22) b/w cardboard thick posters that included T-Rex, Jimi, Greatful Dead, Joni, Van Morrison, Zappa, Neil Young, Gordon Lightfood and James Taylor-all Warners artists at the time. The BB pic is alot better in the set than this one. I get alot of good comments about them.

Steve Desper took the above picture and another one on the back steps of Brian's Bellagio house during a recording session in 1971. The other picture, with Brian looking into the camera, was published and made into a Warner/Reprise promo poster (22" x 27" with a cardboard backing as Suferdude says). Before I framed mine and put it behind glass, I could faintly see "U.S. Army" on the front of Al's shirt - an attempt had been made to airbrush it out.

If anyone out there has this poster, Steve Desper would really love to have it. I told him I will leave mine to him in my will when I die.

How did you obtain that poster? Do you have the set? Just curious.

I got the black & white poster from a record store called "Record Factory" in the early 70's. They hadn't even put it up on the wall yet and I asked them for it. I got the same picture (8x10 glossy) in a press kit from the Beach Boys business office on N. Ivar in Hollywood in the early 70's. That's where I got my Surf's Up promo poster too. That one was a little harder to get! The Warner/Reprise press kit has 8x10 pictures of Brian, Mike, Al, Dennis, Carl, and Bruce, circa 1970. 

I hadn't seen the alternate picture before until this thread.

It was taken backstage and came back with "to Sherry...Mike Love". We were hoping for Dennis or Carl or both to sign it-she was happy with Mike's scribble but Dennis had smiled at her a few times (she was beautiful) and she kind of hoped he'd be the one to sign it.

Didn't we all like Mike in the beginning? I did. He hadn't pulled any of his stunts and the band wasn't turned into an oldies jukebox. He just became more tacky and evil as the years went by. Genuine slime ball by all accounts.

Oldsurferdude, I was joking about Mike's autograph on the Surf's Up poster. It wouldn't matter who's autograph is on that thing. Just having that poster is really something to have in the collection. I only know of three in existence - yours, mine, and a friend of mine. Maybe someone who posts here has one or has seen one, but over the years I haven't seen one offered for sale in Goldmine, Discoveries, Record Collector, or Ebay.

I think that's kind of a garish shot but Brian looks plenty amused at it all, which I think is pretty funny. If I had to go for "hip" though I think I'd go with Carl for the laconic ('disinterested' more likely) cool or Al because, well, he looks like what you'd expect of the early '70s... which was at least considered cool then, I hope!

Dr. Zhivago was released in 1965, based on Boris Pasternak's novel and was awarded 5 Oscars.  That blockbuster film was in the théâtres for about 6 years, (the smaller théâtres for a long time, as there were no DVD's or Videocassettes to own your own copy so people saw it multiple times) and it was a great "look" - and that a lot of guys sported...Omar Sharif's image was on billboards for years.    ;)

My mum was a great Sharif fan. She made lots of drawings of him.

Mine was too, and we saw it together several times...and would never miss it,  when it was on television years later...It never got old!

Yes, I've seen them in concert, and they definitely moved around more than wax figures

They do look waxy - three clues I spy:

1) the size of Al's hands – clearly taken off the wax of a much taller man.
2) Mike's hair – clearly taken off the wax of a man with hair.
3) the length of Bruce's limbs – even though he's got eight-foot long legs, he's still able to pinch Carl's bum.

Mine were thoughts of the color of Dennis' lips, as well as Carl's and Alan's, alongside Alan's eyes and stare which appears a bit unnatural.  But, if it is wax, I think it is an excellent job!

Is there an authenticated wax likeness and where is it?  I did a search, which yeilded zilch!

Could the answer to the "waxen thing" be stage makeup prior to a TV performance or photo shoot where a desired visual effect was desired?  If you "stretch" the picture on an iPad, it looks as if it could be makeup, for color TV!

Ya, it's pretty thick and obvious make-up. Mostly noticeable on Al and Mike, for some reason.

It could be a very poor application of Photoshop, like a bad colorization job or overuse of filters.

Mike looks like a GI Joe 'Prisoner of War' edition doll.....Minus the surgeon's smock.

There is makeup which has a similar 'deadening' effect on the skin tone, maybe they were dusted with that? I can't remember what it was called, but i've had it on me before and i looked rather doll-like.

As for these latest pics: I guess it was meant to be funny, but in this case it is an unfortunate choice of pictures (to put it mildly).

The logic behind the picture, in case people didn't get it, was "moustache". Hitler's is pretty famous, Bruce's isn't.

And yes, maybe I do have a weird sense of humour. I also turn my head and look away when I pass a road accident out of respect, unlike most people, so don't presume to judge me just because you and I don't agree on what is funny. I could judge everyone who is offended and say that censoring things just because you don't like them is facism.

I judge by what you do. You may be a terrific person and I truly hope that you are. This was poor taste and the only thing that I am judging. You think Bruce would appreciate what you did? Also, today is Independence Day here in the U.S.. We, as well as Great Britain paid a huge price in lives lost or wounded fighting against what Hitler stood for, not to mention all who died in the concentration camps. I guess some of us see Hitler as heinous and not a comic character.

The only reason I can agree with the photos being removed was because people in high places read this board, and I don't think Bruce would have taken kindly to those pictures - I don't think anyone here would appreciate this board being taken away because someone in a high place gets his or her knickers in a knot and wants the board offline until that content is removed. Back when the board was down last weekend you were all probably rocking back and forth in the fetal position out of fear that the board will never return. Best not to risk that again, I would think.

For what it's worth I found it funny but can understand how others may not. I was lucky enough to have been born decades after Hitler was wiped out and so only know the suffering he caused from textbooks and such. Personally I think taking the piss out of him and Bin Laden and Saddam etc is a good FU at them and everything they stood for. Guess you have to tread carefully when you are dealing with one of the most despised men who ever lived. (Adolf not Bruce!!)

I agree with what IH-A and Chevy are trying to say. I wasn't for removing the picture as it didn't personally offend me (and even if it did, I wouldn't have wanted it removed but someone got to it before I did so my hands are, in a rare unfortunate situation, tied). I do think there was a general overreaction and a much more offensive display of hypocrisy; as I mentioned before, people here have compared Michael Love to Hitler with no controversy.

Our own propaganda machine in the late 30's/early 40's actively encouraged the lampooning of Hitler. We were facing him alone, (though obviously aid convoys from the U.S were greatly appreciated) To this day it's amazing we weren't invaded. People laughed at Hitler, and made songs up about him as a morale boosting exercise.

Indeed. I finally started getting back into the surf albums a few weeks ago - Lonely Sea, Surfin USA, Surfin Safari - all sound just as good as anything Brian ever did.

I used to have two perceptions of Brian - the Surfin USA Brian, and the pot smoking genius Brian....after listening to a lot of the earlier stuff lately my perception has changed - he's the same guy all along (just with a bit more influence later on in his 60s career)...for the mostpart.

My point regarding Independence Day was that many American soldiers died in World War II defending the freedoms we originally fought for during our revolution. I do not have a problem lampooning Hitler, but sticking his face on Bruce is not lampooning Hitler, it is disrespecting Bruce. how come you answered everything else I posted, but not that point?

Bruce is a big boy, who has made lots of many being in The Beach Boys. @ Iron Horse-Apples : it was nothing personal, and I was aware that you didn't mean to provoke or insult anybody, but just to make a lighthearted joke. To be honest: I've seen more shocking things being posted here than this (and not doing anything about it). A picture of Hitler on itself isn't provoking or insulting at all. And I wasn't offended personally either.
But I did ask myself the question "what if I were the one who's head on the picture was replaced with one of Hitler?" I wouldn't have been to happy about that, even if I knew it was meant to be a joke. And that's why I thought I'd do a sensible thing by removing that picture.
