Title: Bit of fun... what if Smiley Smile and Wild Honey were one album... Post by: willy on August 27, 2010, 10:37:37 AM Apologies if this has been done before. Wild Honey was released exactly 3 months after Smiley Smile, but what if they had just waited a while and picked the best of all the songs from that late '67 period.
And let's say Capitol DID release a SMiLE album as was bandied about at the time, so finished SMiLE tracks would be included on that. This tracklist is personal taste and so a few things have been left in the can, but please feel free to do your own — also what would be a good title for this album? Can't Wait Too Long (A Cappella Mix) 0:52 ("I miss you darlin, I miss you so hard'' into......) Darlin' 2:15 Time To Get Alone 2:38 Country Air 2:16 Little Pad 2:33 Cool Cool Water 2:58 The Letter 1:50 Wind Chimes 2:36 Heroes And Villains 3:40 Fall Breaks and Back to Winter 2:15 I'd Love Just Once To See You 1:51 With Me Tonight 2:14 Here Comes The Night 2:44 Can't Wait Too Long 5:34 Title: Re: Bit of fun... what if Smiley Smile and Wild Honey were one album... Post by: The Heartical Don on August 27, 2010, 10:48:13 AM Very nice idea! I have two objections to your list: The Letter, and Here Comes The Night. I must log out now, so I'll return tomorrow with some ideas. The beauty of your concept is that there emerges a great autumnal LP (my view), something entirely of its own.
My last thought for now: it should be coherently mixed and produced, preferably in real stereo (in the style of Friends). Later, the Don. Title: Re: Bit of fun... what if Smiley Smile and Wild Honey were one album... Post by: hypehat on August 27, 2010, 10:52:10 AM But if Capitol had released a Smile album, why would H&V, Wind Chimes and Cool Cool Water be on this?
Apart from the little piece of nit-picking... Watch this space. I shall debate this when i am back from the pub, methinks. Title: Re: Bit of fun... what if Smiley Smile and Wild Honey were one album... Post by: Runaways on August 27, 2010, 11:03:33 AM i would keep it a long album. maybe double. have some smile recordings like wind chimes, wonderful and cabinessence. then you would have the beach boys' white album

Apart from the little piece of nit-picking... Watch this space. I shall debate this when i am back from the pub, methinks. It's the original version of Cool Cool Water, not the Sunflower one so it wouldn't include the Dada water chant. No answer for the other two, but then I decided to break the rule by sticking a Smile recording of Wonderful in there! Title: Re: Bit of fun... what if Smiley Smile and Wild Honey were one album... Cool Cool Water (though based on Da Da) was done during Wild Honey (or thereabouts). :) Some things I left off for a reason... never liked SS Wonderful compared to the perfect harpsichordy breezy original. Gettin' Hungry I find a bit throwaway (no offence to anyone). Mama Says.... surely better as part of Vega-Tables. There were some truly awesome sessions for With Me Tonight during SMiLE, though I love the SS version too. 8) Title: Re: Bit of fun... what if Smiley Smile and Wild Honey were one album... Post by: rab2591 on August 27, 2010, 11:14:00 AM What a great idea! Wow, gotta make a new ipod playlist for this!
Eh, I'll call the album 'Wild Smile' for now....yep, very original ;D 1. Heroes and Villains (alternate take version) 2. Country Air 3. Little Pad 4. Fall Breaks and Back To Winter 5. Aren't You Glad 6. Wonderful (smiley smile version) 7. Darlin' 8. How She Boogalooed It 9. Wind Chimes 10. Vegetables 11. With Me Tonight 12. Whistle In Title: Re: Bit of fun... what if Smiley Smile and Wild Honey were one album... Post by: willy on August 27, 2010, 11:20:01 AM Perhaps under the circumstances from over that past year: Been Way Too Long could be the album's title.
BTW try Time To Get Alone followed by Country Air (stereo version if you have it)... they sound like a great pair and have a similar sentiment! "Wild Honey" "Aren't You Glad" "Let The Wind Blow" "Darlin'" "Here Comes The Night" "I Was Made To Love Her" Side 2: "Heroes & Villains" "Wind Chimes" "Country Air" "Fall Breaks and Back To Winter" "Wonderful" "Let The Wind Blow" Title: Re: Bit of fun... what if Smiley Smile and Wild Honey were one album... Post by: Mr. Cohen on August 27, 2010, 01:52:45 PM On the topic of alternative BB albums, how about this version of Sunflower:
Side A: 1. I Just Got My Pay 2. Loop De Loop 3. Good Time 4. When Girls Get Together 5. Susie Cincinnati 6. Games Two Can Play Side B: 7. Take A Load Off Your Feet 8. Walking 9. At My Window 10. Back Home (this version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHEzk9ZKVik) 11. San Miguel 12. Tears In The Morning 13. This Whole World To be honest, that probably would've been Brian's favorite Beach Boys album. "Loop De Loop" would've been the album's single, a double A-side with "All I Wanna Do". Never gave any thought to a "Smiley/Honey" album. To me they are so different in style. Interesting ideas though. A while back I thought about starting a thread discussing what if Smiley Smile had been issued using the existing SMiLE tracks instead of rerecording tracks like Wonderful, Wind Chimes, etc. The Boys would only have had to record Fall Breaks, Little Pad, With Me Tonight, Gettin' Hungry, and Whistle In. Half the album was already "in the can". Title: Re: Bit of fun... what if Smiley Smile and Wild Honey were one album... Post by: doc smiley on August 29, 2010, 05:40:56 AM "Fall Breaks and Back To Winter" If Smile had been released, they wouldn't have used this as a track as its a overdub from Mrs O'Leary's Cow Title: Re: Bit of fun... what if Smiley Smile and Wild Honey were one album... I am completely obsessed with Willy's original idea, albeit that it's expanded in my brain by now. Work in progress: construct the best autumnal album from SS, WH, Friends, and 20/20. Ditties like 'Sail Plane Song' are allowed. Perhaps a brief instrumental interlude too, e.g. 'Til I Die' from EH. Only demand: autumnal and peaceful. CWTL should flow into Time to Get Alone, Darlin should follow H&V Title: Re: Bit of fun... what if Smiley Smile and Wild Honey were one album... CWTL should flow into Time to Get Alone, Darlin should follow H&V I really like CWTL right before Time to Get Alone, it sounds really good. I just wish that CWTL was finished, it feels so sparse compared to the Wild Honey tracks, any chance of a lead vocal ever being discovered for this? I remember someone saying a long time ago that the tapes existed somewhere, but I could be misremembering. Title: Re: Bit of fun... what if Smiley Smile and Wild Honey were one album... Take the acapella intro to Can't Wait Too Long, and in audacity put it over Friday Night. It fits in a really weird way. I think Friday Night/I Wanna Be Around, Old Master Painter/You Are My Sunshine all fit in on an album like this. Title: Re: Bit of fun... what if Smiley Smile and Wild Honey were one album...
