Title: Beach Boys Edmund Fitz? Post by: DJF on August 24, 2010, 09:11:15 PM Someone I know claims to have heard a version of "wreck of the edmund fitzgerald" by the beach boys. I have never heard of them covering that song and can't find any links to a BB cover. Did the BB or any faction of the BB ever cover this song? AGD?

Or, to be more accurate, if they have, it's escaped the notice of every single BB fan, historian and researcher on this planet. Title: Re: Beach Boys Edmund Fitz? Post by: Smilin Ed H on August 25, 2010, 02:15:41 AM But wouldn't it be nice...?

Anyone know anything of his tale? Title: Re: Beach Boys Edmund Fitz? Anyone know anything of his tale? I meant 'this' tale but it kind of fits anyway. Title: Re: Beach Boys Edmund Fitz? Post by: Andrew G. Anyone know anything of his tale? Again, in my 35 years of BB fandom, never heard of that title before. Which isn't to say it doesn't exist, of course. Title: Re: Beach Boys Edmund Fitz? Post by: buddhahat on August 25, 2010, 04:41:08 AM We should devote a thread to songs that fans claim to have heard, but that are not widely know of. A poster on this board (can't remember the name) claimed to have heard a version of H&V that incorporated With Me Tonight. If it exists, I would so love to hear it.

Well, it's part of the "grey area" release "HEROES & VILLAINS SESSIONS"; it's a more upbeat, bass-driven snippet of "With Me Tonight" (similar to SMILEY's "Vegetables") that suddenly shows up amidst the better-known sections of H & V. Whether it was actually recorded as an insert for the song is uncertain, but it was included on this particular disc which focuses solely on H & V tracking dates. Perhaps this is what the poster is referring to? Or maybe there exists a fan edit that incorporates the same snippet? Title: Re: Beach Boys Edmund Fitz? Post by: Andrew G. Could be me - over 20 years ago, I was listening to a whole bunch of Smile sessions while visiting a US friend high in the thin, cold air, and smack in the middle of an "H&V" session, up popped a longer version of "WMT" that I can only describe as "bells & whistles", very upbeat vocals and lotsa clapping. It was like being slapped in the face with a halibut. In a good way. ;D Title: Re: Beach Boys Edmund Fitz? Post by: smile-holland on August 25, 2010, 08:06:38 AM Sounds like the recording that can be heard on the Heroes And Villains Part 1&2 boot. Don't have CD within reach right now. Wasn't that upbeat version of WMT released on the Hawthorne CA 2CD btw, or was that another alternative version?
Title: Re: Beach Boys Edmund Fitz? Post by: smile-holland on August 25, 2010, 09:42:30 AM just checked it:
Heroes And Villains Part 1&2 (1001 Wilson Records): track 4, ca. 1:30. After some piano playing, suddenly the recording switches to someone playing a bit of bass, someone saying "13" (take 13?), and - accompanied with a bass - a short but upbeat version (30-40 seconds) of With Me Tonight is played. No hand clapping though. And there's Hawthorne CA (from 2001): sounds like a slowed down version compared to the version above. Title: Re: Beach Boys Edmund Fitz? Post by: Andrew G. Know the one i mean?

I think it was a john, or jon somebody and I'm pretty sure they were referring to a complete Brian edit of H&V that incorporated WMT, unless I'm misremembering and it was just a H&V tape that featured a WMT session. Pretty sure it was an alt edit of H&V though. I'll try and search to find the original post. Title: Re: Beach Boys Edmund Fitz? Post by: Mike's Beard on August 25, 2010, 10:51:54 AM I have a Smile boot that has a song listed as "Link". It is only about 45 seconds long and it is a VERY upbeat and VERY happy version of the "On and on she goes dum de do da" part from With me Tonight. Lots of Harpiscord and maybe acoustic guitar on the track from what I can tell (it's not the best quality sound in the world). Anyone else heard that?
