Title: Re: What is your favorite Beach Boy concert that you have heard? Post by: PS on August 21, 2010, 12:05:47 AM In person, has to be September 24, 1971, Carnegie Hall, 11:00 p.m. show, sitting right in front of Carl as he did Surf's Up at the front lip of the stage. My first of some two dozen BB shows, and the most unforgettable because of the excitement in the air from recently released Surf's Up lp (and therefore some SMiLE re-buzzing). I still have the Carnegie Program from that show. It's About Time rocked the rafters:
1. GOOD VIBRATIONS 2. TAKE A LOAD OFF YOUR FEET 3. DON'T GO NEAR THE WATER 4. WOULDN'T IT BE NICE 5. DARLIN' 6. STUDENT DEMONSTRATION TIME 7. COOL COOL WATER 8. LONG PROMISED ROAD 9. GOD ONLY KNOWS 10. SLOOP JOHN B. 11. IT'S ABOUT TIME 12. MIKE'S TM POEM 13. FEEL FLOWS 14. DISNEY GIRLS 15. LOOKIN' AT TOMORROW 16. CAROLINE, NO 17. BARBARA 18. SURF'S UP 19. HEROES AND VILLAINS On tape, the Paramount rehearsals and performance. Title: Re: What is your favorite Beach Boy concert that you have heard? Post by: hypehat on August 21, 2010, 04:05:30 AM I HATE the Paramount performance - i dl'ed it thinking that it was going to be a classy, respectful, well performed show and it's just chintzy, horrific synths with the small blessing of Carl still being alive (although his voice isn't great) and the acoustic bit. Oh, and it's a soundboard.
Best - the '72 Carnegie Hall show. Dennis' vocals on GOK are wonderful. Only problem is the constant tuning and snare-drum changing.... And that it's not a full gig. Hopefully they release it someday, they found the tapes recently didn't they? Title: Re: What is your favorite Beach Boy concert that you have heard? Title: Re: What is your favorite Beach Boy concert that you have heard? Post by: Ian on August 21, 2010, 06:17:55 PM Personally- I love the tapes from Chicago-March 1965. Brian joined them and was in excellent form. The version of "Don't Worry Baby" from this show-absolutely destroys that sorry, out of tune, outtake (from Aug 1964) released as a bonus on the Concert LP CD. The band had great energy and just played really well. Of course I have heard that-as with all the tapes the BBs ever recorded for live release-some monkey business went on in the studio afterwards to "fix" it-but I can't tell if that is true on the tape I heard.

are there any concerts available where they play less "surf" tunes? i know the majority of shows have them, but i didnt know if there was rare occassions were they didn't play as many. Title: Re: What is your favorite Beach Boy concert that you have heard? Post by: the captain on August 22, 2010, 08:49:44 AM Many early '70s shows didn't have many surf songs at all, featuring set lists like the 1971 Carnegie Hall one PS posted above.
Title: Re: What is your favorite Beach Boy concert that you have heard? Post by: tpesky on August 22, 2010, 09:29:26 AM What an interesting set at Carnegie, heavy doses of Carl and Al for sure. That's my biggest complaint of 80s and 90s show, Carl and Al seemed to have less and less leads with the exception of the 93 tour.
Title: Re: What is your favorite Beach Boy concert that you have heard? Post by: Mikie on August 22, 2010, 09:36:47 AM I attended pretty much all of the Beach Boys concerts in the Bay Area and Sacramento between Nov. 17, 1973 (Winterland, San Francisco CA) through the mid 1990’s. The first concert with Ricky & Blondie sticks out in my mind, but the concerts that were REALLY great were May 24, 1975 (Beachago Tour “Day on the Green”, Oakland CA) and July 2, 1976 (“Day on the Green”, Oakland CA). The ’76 concert was the first full concert that Brian attended since 1970, so it was special. To me, out of all of the Beach Boys concerts that I saw over the years, the 70’s Beach Boys concerts were definitely the best. Sure would have liked to have seen the ’71 and ’72 shows!
As far as the live recordings I've heard on tape/CD, that's hard. Again, many of the audience tapes from the 70's concerts (and the "In Concert" album) the '93 acoustic stuff (i.e. Paramount/NY/Valley Forge) in addition to a bunch of other shows that I'm probably forgetting right now. Check Eric Anniversario's site - there's a LOT of good ones there. Title: Re: What is your favorite Beach Boy concert that you have heard? Post by: donald on August 23, 2010, 09:59:21 AM My favorite live recording is the 93 boxset tour /Paramount. Mostly because I've heard so many poor recordings and this one is soundboard quality.
In fact, each time I listen, I can't help but wonder why it hasn't been officially released. Favorite shows, personally, that I've attended, would be the shows shortly following Carl's return in the early eighties. Performing Heaven and singing the oldies, full tilt Carl. And I made a point of getting seats near the stage. Priceless. |
