Title: Brian inspired by Ferde Grofe? Post by: Wrightfan on August 03, 2010, 10:21:37 AM I just recently heard Grofe's Grand Canyon Suite on a Walt Disney movie from the 50's. The Cloudburst part has something really familiar sound at the 3 minute mark:

Post by: rab2591 on August 03, 2010, 10:28:47 AM From my viewpoint Brian got much of his influence from exotica music for Pet Sounds, but I've often wondered what the heck the influence was for 'Fire' - good find!

The similarity I hear is, chords go up, chords go down. That's all. Plus, the assumption that Brian saw the movie/heard the album is just that, assumption. Not impossible, but for now, file under "speculative". Title: Re: Brian inspired by Frede Grofe? Post by: c-man on August 04, 2010, 03:07:48 AM Supposedly the introduction to "California Girls" was inspired by Grofe's "Grand Canyon Suite".

No. It was the other way around. Don't mess with the Brian... :police: Title: Re: Brian inspired by Frede Grofe? The main similarity I hear is in that siren-like string figure. The foreground stuff seems different. But I will go out on a limb and say that Brian almost certainly heard the Grand Canyon Suite or some form of it. Mainly because it was the kind of middle-brow, "pops" classical that his parents would have loved. It was pretty ubiquitous in the culture over here, too. This isn't to say it necessarily influenced him, mind. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Canyon_Suite Title: Re: Brian inspired by Frede Grofe? Post by: Andrew G. Also, for many years American public schools included music appreciation in the primary school curriculum (largely a victim of budget cuts these days). The Grand Canyon Suite, especially, was thought to be accessible to young listeners -- if nothing else, they could relate to the clip-clops of the tread of mules, etc. I know that we were exposed to it (no Bach, no Beethoven), with, I believe, a film strip to make it a multimedia experience. I would be surprised if Brian, too, did not hear it in school. Title: Re: Brian inspired by Ferde Grofe? I have never heard this before, as far as I can tell. I had to turn it way up to hear this rather quiet section. Then the note at 3:10 almost made me hit the ceiling. I may need an electric shock to get my heartbeat back on track. ;D To be honest, I hear more of a resemblence to Revolution 9, than anything Smile related. |
