Title: BB Fantasy Singles Edit Challenge
Post by: punkinhead on July 29, 2010, 07:22:23 PM
So I was thinking the other day of all the different singles, in particularly those that didn't sell well and those that weren't album cuts (maybe a handful). Sometimes, I just feel a lot of the b-sides could have been better, in particularly choosing songs that were from past albums; for example, the Darlin'/Here Today single; why choose a Pet Sounds cut when Let the Wind Blow (or anything else from Wild Honey at that) is a far superior b-side? So I propose a challenge to edit any of the singles A or B side to your liking, and perhaps that change could have charted the single higher. Like switching the 10 Little Indians  ??? A side to something far superior. I myself (when I get the time) will prolly do the whole catalog, including solo singles as well. Some of them I'll prolly leave alone, like I Get Around/Don't Worry Baby, obviously because it hit #1 and it's just a fantastic single. I'd also like to hear what, if Bambu had been released, what the single would have been. I think an obvious rule is to only choose songs that were released/written at that time (chronologically).

A great resource to use for this type of thing is Mr. Doe's: http://www.esquarterly.com/bellagio/usdiscog.html (http://www.esquarterly.com/bellagio/usdiscog.html)   ;)

EDIT:

By the way, you can do whichever discography (US and UK).

Can we do boot...er, "fantasy singles"? That is, singles that would have been released, had the songs themselves been released. If so, then my pick would be Constant Companion with Schoolgirl for the b-side. Followed by Love Remember Me with Love Surrounds Me as the b-side.

The Little Girl I Once Knew/There's No Other (Like My Baby) =Little Girl I Once Knew/Devoted to You (no party dubs)

At the time people were still supposed to believe that Party was actually recorded at a party. Releasing a song without the party overdubs kinda would've given it away.

I never understood why 'Forever' was a B-side to 'Cool, Cool Water'. You can argue about which song is better ('Forever' IMO), but I think it's obvious that 'Forever' is MUCH more radio-friendly.

To my mind, the all time dumbest single release was this:

7/66     Capitol 5706     Wouldn't It Be Nice/God Only Knows  :o

Two guaranteed Top 10 hits - as A sides. Howsabout...

Wouldn't It Be Nice/You Still Believe In Me

God Only Knows/'Trombone Dixie'

I honestly believe that if two unreleased Christmas songs in Micheal, Row the Boat Ashore and Morning Christmas had been packaged together as a double A side single around late November '78, they would have gave the Beach Boys a VERY strong chance of a Xmas No1.

"Meet Me in My Dreams Tonight" should've been a single. The B-side should've been a classic throw-away track used to ensure the A-side is what gets played.

Whose idea was it to release the "Ten Little Indians"/"Country Fair" single? Granted, the associated album is kind of shitty and the good songs were released as singles so... I'd just have not issued that one. Can I do that? If not, I guess I'd issue "The Shift"/"Summertime Blues" or something, I don't know. That album sucks.

This would've been a good Surf's Up era single: "Long Promised Road"/"4th of July". I also would've issued something like "Trader"/"Steamboat" during Holland days. A monstrous Love You single should've been "Roller Skating Child" backed with "Ding Dang" -- whether the single is flipped or not, you get an awesome fuckin' song every time! Also, "Airplane"/"Mona" would be a good single, or flip it the other way, whatever. Another shoulda-been-a-single would be "Time To Get Alone" backed with "Be With Me".

Okay, so I'm basically naming songs I like a hell of a lot and should've been hits. Wishful thinking? Yeah, probably. I'm enough like Phil Spector to give no sh*t about what people think and I think they'd be awesome singles! Better than most of the weird choices they actually made, at any rate.

How about Fall Breaks and Back To Winter for an A-side, and Wind Chimes as a B-side for a Smiley Smile single?

I beleive it was Capitol who thought (after issuing Surfin' Safari) that the 'surfing fad was on its way out' that they issued Ten Indians.

That's why I created this thread, so we all have an opportunity to make up what singles we think would have charted.

I agree, but maybe they were thinkin in terms of how Day Tripper/We can work it Out charted? I don't know, just throwing that out there.

I agree completely that Forever should have been the A side and Cool, Cool Water the B side.  Unfortunately, when the promo single was sent to radio stations, Forever wasn't even included on the record, as that was during the time (rather brief, I think) when Warner Bros (and a number of other labels) sent out the A side in Stereo on one side of the promo copy, and in mono on the other.

I agree, the first single from BW should have been "Meet Me in My Dreams Tonight" b/w "Let's Do It Again."

I think the only song on 'Surfin' Safari' that could've gone anywhere as a single (besides 'Surfin'', 'Surfin' Safari' and '409') is 'Little Girl (You're My Miss America)'.

Let me take a crack at this:
1962:
Ten Little Indians/County Fair becomes Back Home/Land Ahoy(making Cherry Cherry Coupe...not happen  :lol)

1963:
Be True To Your School/In My Room becomes In My Room/Be True to your School

1964:
I Get Around/Don't Worry, Baby becomes I Get Around/All Summer Long
Don't Worry Baby gets it's own single. Becomes Don't Worry Baby/She Knows me Too Well.
When I Grow Up (To Be A Man)/She Knows Me Too Well is scratched off. No single replaces this
Dance, Dance, Dance/The Warmth Of The Sun becomes Dance, Dance, Dance/All Dressed up for School
The Man With All The Toys/Blue Christmas gets pushed to December. Becomes The Man With All The Toys/Auld Lang Syne.

1965:
Do You Wanna Dance/Please Let Me Wonder becomes Kiss me Baby/a complete version of Sandy/Sherry/whatever
Help Me Rhonda/Kiss Me Baby becomes Help me Rhonda/Do You Wanna Dance
Barbara Ann/Girl Don't Tell Me gets pushed up. Becomes Barbara Ann/Devoted to You
The Little Girl I Once Knew/There's No Other (Like My Baby) becomes The Little Girl I Once Knew/And Your Dream Comes True

1966:
Caroline, No/Summer Means New Love gets scratched in favor of a VERY bold idea. A single just with instrumentals! Let's Go Away for Awhile/Trombone Dixie
Wouldn't It Be Nice/God Only Knows gets split like AGD says but I think of the B sides different. I'd have Wouldn't it be nice b/w I Know there's an Answer and GOK b/w Pet Sounds.
Good Vibrations/Let's Go Away For A While becomes Good Vibrations/Look aka I Ran
ALTERNATE HISTORY TIME! Heroes And Villains gets released right when it's supposed to (Say November 1966) and is backed with the fabled "part 2"

1967:
Surf's Up gets released as a single and it ALSO gets the part 2 treatment (A side is the first part backing track followed by the completed track. B side is the 2nd movement.) I have it coming out January of 1967 right with the album.
One more SMiLE single. Vega-Tables b/w an abbreviated version of The Elements. This fails to sell and Brian goes back to basics.

That's all for now. I'll try and finish this up some other time.
