Title: The Most Oddball BB Related Find I've Made So Far...
Post by: Shane on July 17, 2010, 12:42:21 AM
I'm a real thrift store junkie, and over the years I've found my fair share of Beach Boys related items.  I think this one, however, takes the cake for most unusual.  Here's a 4 track (not 8 track) cartridge of "The Many Moods of Murry Wilson".  The album is very difficult to find "in the wild" on vinyl, and I can only imagine how few of these are out there.

And in such nice condition too! ( looks nicer than mine for sure)
Now should you find the 4 track for Wild Honey, you'll have the only released version with the full title of the song " Good Lord, How She Boogalooed It"

Serious? I wouldn't mind seeing a picture of that.

Good find btw.

Oops.  ( very embarassed)
MUCH nicer than mine, because, as it turns out, I was confusing the Murry 4 track for another. I don't have the Murry tape.
Oh well, something to add to the want/wish list...

thanks to bgas (and thank you for sending it to me), here's the scan of (the back of) the Wild Honey 4-track. Very cool indeed!

Did any BBs albums, cartridge or otherwise, ever come out in Quad?

Good Lord, S-O-C-K-I-T to me!!!!!

Sunflower, Surf's Up, and I believe Carl and the Passions are all quad recordings, compatible with stereo.

I'm fairly sure that The Flame LP was released in quad.

I could very easily be wrong and a perusal of the Desper thread is really in order, but I believe while they were recorded to be in quad, the actual releases were only ever in stereo.

One of the strangest things I had  in my old collection was a pair of Brian Wilson's bowling shoes. I rolled a 632 series in them once... :deadhorse

The Murray Wilson 8 track was probably played once and left on a shelf until they donated it to a thrift store 40 years later.

Two tracks on Sunflower - "Cool, Cool Water" & "It's About Time" - are mixed in quad, as are all of Surf's Up & Spring. CATP claims to be a quad mix, but in fact only the two Dennis tracks are: the rest is a sort of DuoPhonic quad and yes, it sounds as bad as you'd imagine. The Flame album is a quad mix as well.

That said, everything Steve Desper recorded & mixed for the band 1969-1971 (and 1979-1980) has an encoded matrix that gives an early form of surround sound.

4 track? I don't know, I am not that familiar. Looked like one of those old 8 tracks to me.

Were those the ones he rented in a bowling alley, put on, and walked out the door and right on home with?  :p

Nope - wasn't engineered by SWD.

4 track tapes are basically the predecessor to 8 track tapes.  They look very similar, yet sound noticeably better.

I already posted this in another thread, but my wife has tried checking with the hard-core collectors, to no avail, and this thread reminded me about this the other day.  Back in the 70's, I designed a poster for SUNN amp's, using a shot of The Boys where you could really see them using their amp's.  I even came up with a catch phrase that they used on the poster, "The Beach Boys get a little Sunn".  Anyone have a copy of that poster?  Somehow, I never kept one, and I'd love to just see it again...

Not knowing if this be the correct place to discuss this, and figuring that many here don't collect so much as enjoy the music, I'll ask anyway:
