Title: hypothetical 50th Anniversary Setlist Post by: GoofyJeff on June 04, 2010, 02:34:08 PM I thought it'd be fun to come up with a setlist that the band we put together would play.
Here's my 50 songs... enough hits for the casual fan, but enough treasures for folks like us, and not a marathon concert for the performers or audience. The Band: Brian Wilson - vocals/keyboard Mike Love - vocals/percussion Al Jardine - vocals/guitar Bruce Johnston - vocals/keyboard/cheerleader David Marks - guitar/vocals Blondie Chaplin - bass/vocals Ricky Fataar - drums/vocals Billy Hinsche - keyboards/vocals John Cowsill - drums/vocals Jeffrey Foskett - vocals/guitar Probyn Gregory - vocals/guitar/trumpet/french horn/tannerin/kitchen sink Paul Mertens - horns/woodwinds Matt Jardine - vocals/percussion Scott Bennett -vocals/guitar/keys/drums/bass Christian Love - acoustic guitar/background vocals The Setlist Short film on the history of the band with interviews, clips, etc Surfin (start with original recording then go live, similar to the way Mike's band does it) California Girls Do It Again Surfer Girl When I Grow Up (To Be A Man) Dance Dance Dance Ballad of Ol Betsy Little Deuce Coupe 409 Shut Down I Get Around Don't Worry Baby Getcha Back Hushabye Add Some Music Please Let Me Wonder Wendy Let Him Run Wild The Little Girl I Once Knew You Still Believe In Me Breakaway Long Promised Road Trader Friends California Saga (On My Way To Sunny Californ-i-a) I Just Wasn't Made For These Times Surf's Up Til I Die Wouldn't It Be Nice To Live Again Angel Come Home Forever Heaven All I Wanna Do Cool Head Warm Heart Midnight's Another Day Marcella Heroes and Villains Wild Honey Don't Fight The Sea Sail On Sailor Sloop John B Wouldn't It Be Nice God Only Knows Caroline No Good Vibrations Kokomo Help Me Rhonda Surfin USA Fun Fun Fun Love and Mercy Not perfect, and the flow in the middle section could be tightened up, but I think it's a good start... Thoughts?!? Title: Re: hypothetical 50th Anniversary Setlist Post by: Stegibo on June 04, 2010, 02:46:19 PM Bruce Johnston - cheerleader What?! :o :lol :lolTitle: Re: hypothetical 50th Anniversary Setlist Post by: Wirestone on June 04, 2010, 03:23:14 PM I'd include Darian.
And I'd cut the solo stuff. Not because it's bad, but because -- I dunno. It doesn't seem to fit, to me. Title: Re: hypothetical 50th Anniversary Setlist Post by: TdHabib on June 04, 2010, 03:30:05 PM Brian has said "Forever" is too heavy for him to do on stage and he tries to keep it off the setlist, so I'd make a qualified guess that "Wouldn't it Be Nice to Live Again" would be too.
Title: Re: hypothetical 50th Anniversary Setlist Post by: Jason on June 04, 2010, 08:50:58 PM Honestly, as much as I defend Michael and Bruce's group, Bruce doesn't really do a hell of a lot onstage. Occasionally he does a lead vocal and sometimes will play keyboards (I Write the Songs or Disney Girls), but "cheerleader", while certainly good for an LOL, is not TOO TOO far off the mark. Title: Re: hypothetical 50th Anniversary Setlist Post by: Matt H on June 05, 2010, 05:43:36 AM I like this setlist, and would keep the solo stuff on it. I would add in "River Song" too and drop Ballad of Ol Betsy to keep it to 50 songs. Nice work Jeff!
Title: Re: hypothetical 50th Anniversary Setlist Post by: Stegibo on June 05, 2010, 06:10:46 AM I think it would be cool if they sing "God Only Knows" with Carl's vocals as playback and the other vocals live.
The same with "Forever" with Dennis on lead. Is this feasible? Title: Re: hypothetical 50th Anniversary Setlist Post by: Alex on June 05, 2010, 09:06:47 AM Where the hell is "Tree"?
Title: Re: hypothetical 50th Anniversary Setlist Post by: A Million Units In Jan! on June 05, 2010, 01:33:13 PM I think it would be cool if they sing "God Only Knows" with Carl's vocals as playback and the other vocals live. The same with "Forever" with Dennis on lead. Is this feasible? Brilliant! And I'm sure it could be done. Title: Re: hypothetical 50th Anniversary Setlist Post by: BillA on June 05, 2010, 01:51:26 PM I think it would be cool if they sing "God Only Knows" with Carl's vocals as playback and the other vocals live. The same with "Forever" with Dennis on lead. Is this feasible? Yes. I have seen Natalie Cole a couple of times and for "Unforgettable" a screen drops down and they use Nat King Cole's recorded vocals for his part of the duet. I figure the Beach Boys could do something simialr for "God Only Knows" and "You're So Beautiful" (I would vote for this simply because that is the song Dennis chose to perform). For the Band I would simply use Brian's band - they do it the best. I could see adding David Marks but am ambivalent to Blondie and Ricky. The songs they were part of are not as big parts of the legacy as other songs. I would also add Matt Jardine and Christian Love since they sound so much like Brian and Carl respectively. With that said I would add the following to the set list: "All This and That" "Warmth of the Sun" "Cabinessence" (Just to piss ML off! - oh hell, why not just perform SMiLE?) "Good Timing" "California Saga - Big Sur" "Lady Lynda" I would take out any of the solo songs except for L&M. Title: Re: hypothetical 50th Anniversary Setlist Post by: Stegibo on June 05, 2010, 01:55:50 PM I would take out any of the solo songs except for L&M. Either one solo song of each member or no solo song... I think that's fair.Title: Re: hypothetical 50th Anniversary Setlist Post by: Emdeeh on June 05, 2010, 05:18:01 PM The main song on my wishlist is "Wild Honey" -- Matt Jardine lead is fine.
I'm going to "borrow" this thread for a moment, for a related question. Someone told me they saw an ad a few days ago for a Beach Boys reunion show, with Mike, Bruce, Al, and Brian for a one-off date in mid-July of this year. I'm skeptical, but this is from a pretty level-headed person, so I'm asking -- has anyone heard anything like this?? I thought maybe he/she had seen a post about Al's July show, but they said it was an ad for everyone sharing a stage. Title: Re: hypothetical 50th Anniversary Setlist Post by: Jason on June 05, 2010, 06:31:57 PM Probyn Gregory - vocals/guitar/trumpet/french horn/tannerin/kitchen sink Can you imagine Foskett introducing that? "Andddddddd over here on my right, playing guitar, trumpet, french horn, theremin, and, a replica of the sink Brian used to puke into all those years ago at the Bellagio house...Mr. Probyn Gregory!" Title: Re: hypothetical 50th Anniversary Setlist Post by: phirnis on June 06, 2010, 05:00:30 AM For some reason I can't picture them playing songs like "Long Promised Road" and "Angel Come Home".
Title: Re: hypothetical 50th Anniversary Setlist Post by: JaredLekites on June 06, 2010, 11:29:10 AM My setlist would be as such:

Surfer Girl Why Do Fools Fall In Love Dance Dance Dance Be True To Your School Little Deuce Coupe Don't Worry Baby Little Deuce Coupe 409 Shut Down All I Wanna Do When I Grow Up (To Be A Man) California Saga (On My Way To Sunny Californ-i-a) Heroes and Villains You Still Believe In Me Cotton Fields Hushabye Add Some Music Please Let Me Wonder Don't Fight The Sea The Little Girl I Once Knew Marcella God Only Knows Breakaway Kokomo Sail On Sailor Hawaii Wouldn't It Be Nice Help Me Rhonda Forever Good Vibrations ENCORE: Surfin USA Barbara Ann Fun Fun Fun Title: Re: hypothetical 50th Anniversary Setlist Post by: Eric Aniversario on June 07, 2010, 12:14:12 AM I'm going to "borrow" this thread for a moment, for a related question. Well, 'tis The Beach Boys after all... ;D One reason why this is very unlikely - The Gershwin Songbook. Also, Mike & Bruce are in Europe June 25th-July 10th, then on tour back home from the 17th. Any details on where this is slated to happen ? Title: Re: hypothetical 50th Anniversary Setlist Post by: jeffh on June 07, 2010, 08:16:38 AM I don't see Ed Carter on your list on band members. He certainly belongs there.
Title: Re: hypothetical 50th Anniversary Setlist Post by: Emdeeh on June 07, 2010, 01:02:49 PM AGD, my friend can't remember the date, other than it was in mid-July and on the East Coast. There's been no mention of this event on fan sites, BBFC hasn't heard of it and the BBBand website doesn't have any such thing listed.
If there really was such an event happening, one would think they'd want us to know in time to buy tickets and arrange travel/lodging. Most shows in the U.S. are promoted a couple of months in advance at the very least. A BB reunion would/should be a big deal. I don't doubt that my friend saw something he/she thought was notable, and it could just be as simple as promotion or journalistic error, which does happen. But, I'm puzzled. Title: Re: hypothetical 50th Anniversary Setlist Post by: Jason on June 07, 2010, 08:20:34 PM My ideal 50th Anniversary lineup -
Brian Wilson - vocals Michael Love - vocals/Moog ribbon synthesizer Al Jardine - vocals/rhythm guitar Bruce Johnston - vocals Blondie Chaplin - vocals/lead and rhythm guitar/bass Ricky Fataar - vocals/drums/steel guitar David Marks - vocals/lead guitar Matt Jardine - vocals Christian Love - vocals/guitar Billy Hinsche - keyboards/guitar/backing vocals Ed Carter - bass/guitar/backing vocals Scott Bennett - keyboards/vibes/backing vocals Nelson Bragg - percussion/backing vocals John Cowsill - drums/backing vocals Richie Cannata - tenor sax Title: Re: hypothetical 50th Anniversary Setlist Post by: Pretty Funky on June 08, 2010, 01:04:53 AM Goofy Jeff wrote

Title: Re: hypothetical 50th Anniversary Setlist Post by: donald on June 08, 2010, 07:45:13 AM I don't see anyone wanting Barbara Ann included in the set. An oversight no doubt. Right AGD?

Neither would want attention given to any reunion next year.
