Thank you, Kayla, for these wonderful renditions of classic BB songs. Sure, I can record the audio steam, but when do I get to purchase official downloads or a CD? And what other BB stuff do you plan to record?

Title: Re: Female covers \ Post by: KaylaMusic on May 21, 2010, 11:50:21 PM Rob how I got into the Beach Boys:
I was just a toddler when my dad would pick me up and dance to "Surfer Girl". I was always dancing and singing to their music as a kid. Then when I was 15 my Aunt sent me a Beach Boys compilation album and I fell in love with the music all over again. Then it became an obsession to find everything I could. Once I found Pet Sounds it went to a whole new level-my mom actually tried to ban me from listening to them because I was becoming too emotional! lol My whole summer was spent renting the one Beach Boys biography in town, digging up old tapes, and making my room into a Beach Boys/Brian shrine. I've since talked to him on the phone with Brian's Hurricane Katrina donation thing, however, my life long goal to meet him and see a concert has yet to happen because I live in Alberta Canada and he's never toured here! I guess one of these days when I get some money I'll have to buy a ticket to some show in the States as near me as possible... My 2 best friends actually got to meet him at NAMM the year they went, but when we went with my college in 2008 he was not there :( I still have time though I think..dreams can come true! lol Title: Re: Female covers \ Post by: markcharles75 on May 24, 2010, 08:49:37 AM Are myself and Kayla the only 2 Canadians on this board? Wow. Out of the whole country?
I will probably never get to see Brian in concert either. I think my biggest regret in life is not going to the Smile shows (especially the premiere, provided I could have gotten tickets.) I should have but oh well... In a strange way, I really don't care for live music. I have the records. That is fine for me. I could never picture myself going to a U2 concert (don't like them anyways) or to stand in a field from an insane distance to "watch" the Stones. I guess I really am not into the spectacle of a "live show." Brian would be the exception because he is such a musical hero of mine. I think I would sob the whole time lol Anyone else feel this way about not going to concerts? Title: Re: Female covers \ Post by: Rich E P on May 24, 2010, 10:48:05 AM Hello Kayla (and Mark),
I am from Calgary, Alberta so you two are not the only Canucks. I know there are a few more lurking too. Kayla, I love your cover versions. Great choices of tracks. Wonderful production. Did you go into a pro studio or just a DIY Macbook kinda thing? Great sound, loved the stacked vocals. I play in a band (two actually) here in Calgary but we don't do the Beach Boys because I feel we can't do the vocals justice. You certainly do. Nice work. Brian has been to Alberta before. I saw him here (and elsewhere too). He played a private show in Edmonton for the chamber of commerce in Jan 2004. I joined the chamber (because you had to be a member to attend the show). It was just a month before the Smile shows at the Royal Festival Hall. I got my Smile slick signed by Brian Wilson (thanks to the kindness and generosity of Scott Bennett). I also had the pleasure of meeting Brian a few times (in New York, Las Vegas, Vancouver and Minneapolis). I have seen Brian live about 20 times and the Beach Boys much more than that. Brian was also in Alberta back in the late 80's with The Beach Boys for a special Winter Olympic show too. Brian may not have any shows in Alberta coming up but Mike and Bruce will be in Alberta for several shows in the fall. Go check 'em out they put on a great show too! I actually use ProTools and my Digi 003 to record in my home. I also have a Korg M3 as my keyboard :) As for Brian being in Alberta in 2004, I would have had no means financially or other to see him and I wasn't really alive in the 80's! lol I have seen the Beach Boys (Mike and Bruce) in Red Deer before and I know they're coming again this fall but I think once was plenty..I just really want to see Brian! Title: Re: Female covers \ Post by: Myk Luhv on May 26, 2010, 10:54:00 PM I'm also from Canada! Born in Ottawa and raised from grade nine onwards in Halifax. I saw Brian and a couple members of his band at Ottawa Bluesfest in, I think, 2007. Although I appreciated seeing him, Brian was obviously uninterested in doing a greatest hits set and only really came to life when two then-new songs (from TLOS) were played. Even more unfortunately, some malfunctioned at the sound booth and the giant speakers kept cutting out which, it seemed to the crowd, make Brian almost bail. The problems were fixed relatively quickly (alas, one of the new songs was heard only from one speaker) and Brian got back to... sitting there, and occasionally deciding to bark some lyrics. But, hell, it was worth it to see even that, I thought!
I present to you appropriately Canadian content: the great cuddlecore band Cub, out of Vancouver, covering "Surfer Girl" off of Betti-Cola (released 1993, with cover artwork by Dan DeCarlo): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6JntClLDIM Title: Re: Female covers \ Post by: KaylaMusic on June 17, 2010, 01:56:17 PM So I do have another cover, it's not Beach Boys (theres another on the way soon!) Title: Re: Female covers \ Post by: Myk Luhv on July 03, 2010, 07:04:32 PM Your covers capture the spirit of The Beach Boys, Kayla, and I think that is what a lot of people/bands who claim any sort of BBs/BW influence lack: they might have the letters down, but they ain't got no spirit! You've got both, and it's very remarkably good!
I have a couple of suggestions that I think would be quite excellent sung by a female vocalist (and the perspective that it suggests, although not terribly different, would still be interesting, I think): You're So Good To Me Airplane Time To Get Alone Aren't You Glad? Do you write your OWN music? I've been watching your stuff for a while now and you're extremely talented. Have you thought about forming your own group? I especially love your version of "Let The Wind Blow". That song has always been one of my favorites. Especially the version off of "In Concert 1973". Keep up the excellent job that you're Passionately enjoying! Cheers, Big Bri Title: Re: Female covers \ Post by: Andrew G. Doe on August 12, 2010, 10:01:51 AM Check it out:

I'll maintain always that Wild Honey is a collection of demos for a great album, nothing more.
Title: Re: Female covers \ Post by: Menace Wilson on August 12, 2010, 11:38:09 AM I like how you left in those extra beats at the beginning of the "bahh..ba ba ba..." section (which I always suspected was a bad edit in the original) and the false start in the bass coming out of it. 8)

There is so much reverb or whatever that I can make out very little of what's being sung. Google was no help. Here are the lyrics: God only knows how many tunes I´ve listened to in my room Songs of endless summer And the Surfer Moon Made me cuddle up with a surfer girl (Surfer Boy ) In the California Sand I caught a wave while I fell in love to The rhythm of a steel drum band Chorus: The First American Band From Southern California A Cousin and a Friend Along with three brothers They made their Mamas cry With every single song Their story isn´t over As long as their music plays on Verse: Caroline my little girl Oh, where did your long hair go? You are no longer the sweet thing That I used to know I will pick you up in my 4-0-9 We’ll cruise the hamburger stands Because, everything is just fine When they play “Do you wanna dance” Chorus: The First American Band From Southern California A Cousin and a Friend Along with three brothers They made their Mamas cry With every single song Their story isn´t over As long as their music plays on Title: Re: Female covers \ Post by: Surfing Moose on August 25, 2010, 10:37:37 AM Kayla, I enjoy listening (and watching) your songs and I can't wait to hear your next cover. I'm excited to see, what song you will choose next.
Keep up the excellent work! :) The Moose in the name might presume I'm Canadian, but I'm not ;D Greetings from Germany Title: Re: Female covers Post by: Sound of Free on August 25, 2010, 11:31:35 AM Most songs that comprise of lists of song titles aren't very good, but this is fun. :) How dare you take a cheap shot at "Smart Girls" like that! :)Title: Re: Female covers \ Post by: GLarson432 on August 26, 2010, 01:18:40 AM Kayla -- Thanks very much for the lyrics. I've printed them out and will 'learn' them upon a few more listens.

Title: Re: Female covers \ Post by: Myk Luhv on August 27, 2010, 10:46:15 AM Not gonna lie, I have a nagging suspicion that the "Help Me Rhonda" guitar riff would make a pretty good sample loop for a hip-hop beat. And the third verse of "Little Honda" sounds, at least in passing, like Mike Love accidentally made a terrible rap:
Quote It climbs the hills like a matchless Cause my Honda's built really light When I go into the turns Lean [Tilt] with me and hang on tight I better turn on the lights So we can ride my Honda tonight ...not that I endorse either of these things turning up in a hip-hop song, mind you!
