Title: Endless Summer Quarterly [ESQ] summer edition with CD
Post by: ESQ Editor on May 03, 2010, 09:16:37 AM
If you're considering subscribing to ESQ now is the time. The summer issue will include a CD that Beach Boys fans won't be able to get anywhere else. The summer edition will only be available to subscribers in 2010. Who's on the CD? Follow this thread over the next several weeks.

It is not a tribute CD, it is a one-of-a-kind limited edition collectible. Don't wait to subscribe.

Does the title include the words "California" and "Postcard"?

More developments on the ESQ CD.

Music from: Brian Wilson, Michael Love, Alan Jardine, David Marks, Carl Wilson and Dean Torrence will be on the disc. "Don't Fight The Sea" will not be on this CD. The CD gathers together music that represents NEW and older material. I'll share titles and artwork in the coming week(s). The collection is called, "An ESQ Offering From The Boys Of Summer."

The summer issue will be mailed by mid June.

I always thought the Carl tune It Could Be Anything from early 1978 would have been good on some of the themed ESQ CDs. That one is a great, great tune. Carl in fine voice throughout.

I also bought a few back issues that I had missed by not being a subscriber and Mr. Beard and staff were very gracious to find a Dennis issue that I reallly wanted badly!!!! Every issue is well worth every cent spent!!!! I encourage all of you to get on this special band wagon.....you won't regret a moment of it!!!! It's always an Endless Summer.....................

It's right. You need to set up a Paypal account, load some funds into it from your own bank account, then follow the guidelines for the easy step-by-step process. Paypal will also operate with e-cheques but I'm not sure what the process is there for new account holders  you might need to get your account verified first. It's worth doing as once set-up, the process is simple and can be handy for buying all sorts of things – footwear for instance – for which dealers... I mean, traders ... might not have regular Visa accounts. Or for eBay transactions.

You don't need a Paypal button -  you just log in to your own Paypal account and transfer the money using the recipient's email address.

Far as I know, Jay, buyers don't pay any S&H charge (whatever that is!).  It might get deducted from the vendor's takings, at a guess...

I wonder how many CDs David's having pressed, and whether they'll all be allocated by the time folks here get around to subscribing!

The CD seems alright, but after visiting the web page I figured that this is a very cool rag devoted to my favorite music...after cancelling my subscriptions to Elle and Cosmopolitan I figured I had enough dinero for ESQ. I can read about this music all day long; but hopefully there are cool pictures also.  :)

It is indeed an excellent rag, and continues to improve with age.

Well, until I got press-ganged and dragged aboard kicking and screaming...

You too, eh Andrew?  Actually, I didn't do much kicking & screaming, as this was added incentive for us here at Roach-clip archives to dig through my photos & negatives one more time!
As a matter of fact, "noname", I'm digging through it right now, looking for photos for an upcoming article by no other than Mr. Doe.  Hope I can add to the 'cool pictures' you'd like to see.  Think we came through in the last issue, with some never-before-seen images...

mr. roach...in the past year i have always wanted to ask you this question. one of the few items i still have of my collection lost in the fire was a photo i had at my dads. somehow i never had taken it to the house. i got this photo back in aug of 1975 from triangle productions in michigan. cool shot of the group in concert. without a scanner right now i know you can't see it. but carl is wearing the shirt with red hearts (looks like hearts)..2 drummers (one ricky so it had to be from 74 i guess)..jim on bass...dennis wearing jacket with what looks like a red rose on it (lots of roses at his feet). just wondering if maybe you took it (if you did and can even remember it seeing you can't see it) and knew of triangle productions. cool photo anyways...thanks....

I think a lot of the problem folks are having is there is no dedicated Paypal button for your site. Every other site I have ever bought something from (seems like thousands!) has a Paypal button that takes you right to checkout, without having to enter the address of the recipient of the money. Surely you would have more subscribers if you used this simple user friendly solution. The reason I never signed up was for that exact reason...wasn't sure I was doing it right.
just a thought...

Yes, its the title track on his upcoming CD.  David has been working on this project, which is a collaboration with Stephen Kalinich, on and off for the last 3 years but he's closing in on the finish line.

First thing you brought to mind, Steve, was "Triangle" by the Beau Brummels...  Man, I loved that album back in the 60's!  (Just dug it out, & I'd never known it was produced by Lenny Waronker!)  Anyway, back to your question: you're right, it is hard for me to tell just from the description, but it's entirely possible it is mine.  Certainly I remember that particular Nudie suit of Carl's, and I'm trying to remember the name of that second drummer that was along with Ricky for awhile...
You also set me off in search of the production company, who I don't remember offhand, but I found a company in Grand Rapids that was formerly Triangle Productions.  Alas, the owner of the company told me he'd formed Triangle in 1984, so it wasn't him!  Next time I speak with our old friend Boyd I'll see if he's ever heard of them, and if you ever get a chance, scan the photo so we can all see the image.  Sounds like a good one.  And so sorry about your loss...

Thanks again to you, too, Steve.  I see Livonia is right outside Detroit, nowhere near Grand Rapids.  Still doubt they exist anymore, but I'm looking.  You've sparked my interest...

Nope, I meant to mention right away that it wasn't Bobby.  I vividly remember his first tour, which I think was in the Pacific Northwest.  I've got footage of Ricky playing with this other drummer, that was in one of my tv commercials for the In Concert album

i remember reading an article from cashbox in early 1974 on the beach boys. talked about jim joining the group to play bass. and it was a tour in the pacific northwest for (i think it was this number) 18 dates.

OK - if not Bobby, then has to be Mike Kowalski, who toured with them in 1973. Remember, '74 was Ricky's last year with the band - he drummed for them from mid-1971 on.

I was thinking it was Mike K as well.  If not, who could it be?  I don't recall any other short term drummers with the band.........or am I missing someone?

C'mon, Andrew, give me some credit...  I've known Mike since the sixties, for gosh sakes!  Think someone came up with this guys name before, after asking about him in my footage.  (Once again, where is Mr. Boyd?  I know they did a hi-def transfer of my commercials recently, and he can probably identify him.)  I think this was the commercial I shot at Winterland in San Francisco; I had to double-print several frames, so both drummers matched the beat.  This was a young, (weren't we all back then?!), good looking longhair, that was a double drummer between Mike & Bobby.  And it wasn't Dennis Dragon, either...

OK, if not DD... then who ?

Well, after Ricky joined they played Winterland December 1971 and April & November 1973... got a name in 1971 I don't recognise - Bobby Torres. Thing is, he was more of a conga guy.

Don't think it was this guy, and pretty sure he was hired on as a drummer.
Oh, and I guess this would have been November '73; (ironically, just about
Blondie Chaplin's last show, before the fateful one in New York).

Yes, it is Eddie Tuduri (born in Derby, Connecticut) who little later played in Rick Nelson's Stone Canyon Band around 1974/75 and also wrote the song "Louisiana Belle" together with Jerry McGee for Rick.

Phew - a few things: #1, no, Steve, definitely not my photo; in fact, other than the wicker arches, the whole thing throws me a bit...  Thanks for posting it, as this is a very unique lineup & time; #2, I was pretty certain I remembered him by name when I read your post earlier today, Andrew - hard to forget another Ed, as there aren't many of us; and #3, I was almost positive, when I first viewed the photo last night, that this wasn't the same drummer as the one in my footage.  This kid had long straight hair, and the guy in the photo seems to have kind of an afro.  Well, I just googled him, http://www.x8drums.com/v/blog/2010/02/eddie-tuduri-drums-transcend-normal.asp , and son-of-a-gun if it isn't the guy from my commercial - albeit with a touch of gray...  I'll see if I can't link the clip I'm referring to sometime this weekend.

Hey Folks -

This is Lee Dempsey.  I am David's "silent partner" in ESQ, and I handle the business / administrative side of things.  To answer some of the questions that have come up:

1) A subscription runs for four consecutive issues, regardless of when you start during the year.  So if you subscribe with the Summer 2010 issue, you would get Summer 2010, Fall 2010, Winter 2010, and Spring 2011.  If you subscribe more than 2 weeks before a new issue comes out you'll receive the currently published issue as the first on your subscription.  For example, if you subscribed now you would receive the Spring 2010 issue immediately, and then the Summer 2010 issue as soon as it comes out.

2) The prices quoted ($30 for U.S. addresses; $34 for Canada and Mexico; $38 elsewhere in the world) include First Class postage anywhere in the world.  That's the reason that the cost is different for U.S. vs international -- to incorporate the additional postage cost, any Customs paperwork we have to fill out, etc.

3) We'll have our website contractor look into a direct link to PayPal.  It doesn't look like it will be that difficult, but he charges us for each change to the website, so we try to keep our changes to a minimum, and do them on no more than a quarterly basis.  However if this will bring us more subscribers then it will be worth the investment.

4) All payments should be made in U.S. funds.  Our profit margin is so low that if we start having to pay currency exchange fees on top of our PayPal fees and bank charges we will lose money.  We have a few subscribers who send us U.S. currency in a secure envelope, but the U.S. Postal Service frowns on it, and we cannot be held responsible if the envelope gets lost or stolen.

5) Occasionally we'll get an e-mail saying, "Hey, the new issue is posted on _______ website, why haven't I gotten my copy?"  As soon as Dave designs the cover and finalizes the content he sends out an advance press release to the major BB websites and fan clubs, to drum up interest.  It may still take us 4-6 weeks to get the issue printed and mailed.

6) Dave and I do this in our spare time, when we're not busy with our real jobs and families, so we can't be as responsive as a full-time publication with a dedicated staff.  We have some people who e-mail us, and then e-mail us again 24 hours later wanting to know why we haven't responded.  Occasionally it may be a couple of weeks before we respond to your e-mails or acknowledge your payment -- especially around the time of a new issue, when Dave is busy getting it designed and printed, and I'm getting the stamps and mailing labels ready to go.  And during the summer when we're on vacation / holiday with our families you may receive a delayed response.  We appreciate your patience and understanding.

We hope you'll consider subscribing, and if you have any further questions, ask away!

Lee

How much are they soaking you for?

If you only have quarterly updates (four times a year?) . . . and if you're talking about basic text and image updates to your existing site template (or a PayPal link?), I could edit your pages using Dreamweaver, and post the files to your server . . . and it wouldn't cost you anything.

I wouldn't want to do daily or weekly updates . . . but quarterly or special occasion? No problem.

In other words, pay a contractor to build your snazzy Web design (or redesign) . . . putting together your templates with JavaScript, Flash, and CSS, etc. (and keep them on retainer) . . . but don't let them soak you for simple HTML text and image updates, on top of that.

Maybe we should all volunteer to make up an ESQ "team", instead of it being just a two man operation.  ;D I could "transcribe"(i.e. type out on the computer) stuff, as long as it's not a big ass essay/PDF file.  :)

Therein can lay chaos -  I've done the editing by committee thang and no matter how well-intentioned the team, various members drift in and out or even away all together, for various reasons at various times.  I currently edit a journal by myself and I can't even rely on me to turn in the work when needed.

I like David's small, dedicated, reliable, known-and-trusted hardcore team approach.

"Love Like in Fairytales" sounds like a retitled "Glow Crescent Glow" from ML.

"Sail Away" and "Circle" are David Marks.

"Honkin'" and "Drivin'" would be Al's.

"Ocean Park Angel" - cool ! Sweet little J&D ballad from, ah, late 70s ?

"Mexico", I would assume to be DW.

"Soul Searchin'" - ah, now wouldn't it be nice iffn it were the original BB version...

So..., let's play join the dots:

The Spirit Of Rock And Roll - Brian
Cool Head, Warm Heart - Mike
Run Don't Walk - David ?
Big Wave - David ?
Ocean Park Angel - Jan & Dean
Honkin' Down The Highway (previously unreleased) - Alan & Brian
Drivin' (previously unreleased) - Alan & Brian
Sunny Afternoon - Dean
Soul Searchin' - Carl & Brian
I Sail Away (previously unreleased) - David
Mexico - Dennis
The Circle Continues (previously unreleased) - David
Love Like In Fairytales (previously unreleased) - Mike
Like A Brother - Carl

Except... that leaves one Alan and one Carl over. Hm. No matter - a seriously cool CD.

Correct - so now we have a loose David and a spare Alan... ah, no, David's on "Drivin'" with Brian, so I guess "Big Wave" must be an ACJ recording.

Apparently Al sings on the chorus of David's I Sail Away (assume from the "unreleased" tag that this is a different version to that which appeared on the 2008 ESQ Dennis Wilson tribute disc?). That's according to David Beard on the Heroes & Villains "radio" show which he guested on last week. He also mentioned that David plays some guitar on Drivin'.

Not sure where that leaves the maths!

Good to see some more of Al's tracks on there - the album is gradually being released by stealth!

If only "Soul Searchin'" were the version with Carl singing all the lead! I suspect that getting permission to release that version would be a lot tougher than the GIOMH one.

I'm really pleased that we're getting this release this summer, albeit as a subscriber bonus (and well, well worth the price), instead of yet another Greatest Hits anthology of material we already own multiple times over. Kudos to ESQ for this one!

"The Spirit of Rock & Roll" and "Cool Head, Warm Heart" can be found on that Hallmark Beach Boys release, Songs From Here & Back.  "Like A Brother" and "Run Don't Walk" are from the Beckley-Lamm-Wilson album Like A Brother (which is readily available on iTunes).  "Soul Searchin'" is on Brian Wilson's Gettin' In Over My Head.  And "Mexico" is on the re-release of Dennis Wilson's Pacific Ocean Blue.   Admittingly I'm a tad disappointed that at least half of these tracks I already own (unless they are different mixes or something).   Still, I'm glad I finally subscribed to ESQ.  It will be nice to have Al Jardine's "Drivin'", as it sounded like a catchy track from what I heard from the sample on Al's website; do the band America still make an appearance on this song?

The CD's a freebie that comes attached to the best Beach Boys-related fanzine in the world... you can't really be "a tad disappointed", can you?  I'd be delighted if the CD had 400 takes of Ding Dang on it. Here in Yorkshire "free" is good value!

no dedicated page… sorry

esq is basically a two-man operation

We're looking into a dedicated PayPal page since it's come up
but if it costs additional money we won't do it

Let us know if there is an additional cost, and how much it is, someone with deep pockets might be able to stump up a few bucks to enable this.
