Title: Brain playing Surf's Up on Inside Pop--is that Oppenheim or Bernstein talking?
Post by: The Song Of The Grange on April 25, 2010, 08:30:12 AM
Hello everyone. I haven't posted in a bit, but I have been really enjoying the BBs Myth Busters thread.

Anyway, I have a real inside-baseball geek question. I am wondering who it is doing the voice over narration leading into the clip of BW playing Surf's Up on the Inside Pop documentary. I know Bernstein was the host, but I seem to remember someone on this board saying that it was actually Oppenheim who did the voice over, which goes:

There is a new song, too complex to get all of it the first time around. It could come only out of the ferment that characterizes today’s pop music scene…poetic, beautiful even in its obscurity, ‘Surf’s Up’ is one aspect of new things happening in pop music today. As such, it is a symbol of the change many of these young musicians see in our future. (then BW plays the song)

Any thoughts?

It is Oppenheim narrating and Oppenheim's words.  I'm not sure Bernstein ever mentions the Boys using Oppenheim's words [or his?].

Whoops. I guess Berstein wrote his own words.

Dunno if this was posted before, but I just saw it for the first time. It looks like someone uploaded the Inside Pop-documentary

Thanks for posting that link. I have never seen the entire piece. It's nice to have a broader context of the import in Brian's clip.

wow.  so cool, thank you.
the Zappa stuff was great!  Some of the program was quite funny too (i.e. Bernstein's renditions of songs, and his assuring the folks at home that he only liked a small percent of this "pop music",  and certain other things I just found really amusing.)
Maybe a bit too much coverage of Herman's Hermits.
And really kind of an oddly structured program, there was alot it didn't even give a nod to.
And it makes me wonder how in the start of the program Bernstein is giving examples of how much of this new pop music was quite sophisticated and no mention of Pet Sounds or Good Vibrations?
The only mention of the band/Brian at all is at the end with the Surf's Up piece.
Pet Sounds not even being mentioned really seems odd to me in light of the supposed attempt to show that pop music could be mature, intelligent, and truly musical.
