Title: Wish List: The POB tour rehersals really deserve to be heard...
Post by: kirkmc- banned on the run on April 15, 2010, 07:35:42 PM
MR Stebbins please make 'em do it! (Along with "Wouldn't It Be Nice To Live Again). Really; "I'm beggin' You Please". Throw in a Smile '67 box, and all would right in the world-at long last-)

Is it even worth mentioning that Jon is far from being one of the bigwigs necessary (no offense Jon) to authorize such a release? :)

Supposedly the entire POB album, and Baby Blue, which I would quite possibly commit a murder to hear in a "live setting".

Does anybody know what it would take to "get the ball rolling"? Would it be the same "team" that did the POB/Bambu deluxe set? Or would BRI have to get involved somehow?

Well he is a major force....Books, documentaries, producer of all things Dennis-of course he could influence and help in these matters-Mr. Positivity!!!

It takes a lot more than a few bigwigs and renowned authors with insider status to make things happen in the Beach Boys world. A reissue of Pacific Ocean Blue was going to happen one way or another if Jimmy Guercio had anything to say about it, and, well...if anyone was worthy of the title of being Dennis Wilson's biggest fan I'd stand up and say Jimmy Guercio would have that won by a landslide. And the bullshit all about how the other Beach Boys didn't want it reissued is precisely that - bullshit. That's more of the same tired old Wilson propaganda that the fanbase has been fed for years, the same kind of propaganda that people like you are fed on a daily basis. And would it even matter to mention that Caribou, a part of CBS, now owned by Sony, possessed the rights to the record since Dennis signed his contract with Jimmy Guercio in 1975 and that no amount of bickering on the part of the Beach Boys would have changed that?

It's one thing to "influence" the bigwigs in getting the ball rolling, and certainly our good friends in high places on our forum like Jon, Alan Boyd, and Ed Roach are invaluable for that contribution. And needless to say of course, after a release of the Smile sessions in some grand box set, Pacific Ocean Blue was what everyone in the fanbase was crying out to have reissued. But, as we all know, a good 99% of the time the music industry has never been about catering to the fans; the music industry has been about catering to the masses who will purchase the product. Please remember that Pacific Ocean Blue did earn great critical and respectable public acceptance, considering it was a solo album by the so-called "no-talent drummer" from what was, by 1977, a band venturing into has-been territory.

I am certainly not attempting to lessen the value of Jimmy, Jon, Alan, Ed, and countless others who wanted Pacific Ocean Blue to be reissued for us all to have. It's a matter of commercial appeal. The Pacific Ocean Blue reissue defied the expectations that Sony had for it, not to mention all of our own expectations. The Dennis solo tour rehearsals, while certainly of great interest to the obsessives like us all, are of less overall commercial viability. The aforementioned folks want to see this stuff come out, and we all want to hear it. They all know what's left in there is great. We're pretty convinced based on what they've told us. But we're all not the ones writing the necessary checks to have these projects attempted, are we?

Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

It is a shame that we can't just click our collective fingers and have this huge glut of BB's and BB's solo material from the vaults appear but that's just how things go. On the positive side as the music biz becomes more and more download product orientated I think lots of stuff that at one time would be  considered not commercially viable will start to rear it's ugly head. Making something available via download for a fee must cost the company's a fraction what it cost to produce "hard copy" so undoubtedly this should open up possibilities to music getting released which doesn't have to sell 1000's of copies to make it's money back. Time will tell.

P.S. The "bigwigs" aren't around cause they must get tired of waisting their breath on people who simply don't want to listen to reason.
What's the point? This board is "lucky" to have 'em!

Well bitter boy...

Wow, a five year old has better comebacks. :)

A) I don't smoke

Good man.

B) It's a "wish" list-and anybody that could help with things like the POB rehersals would be swell!

We all have wishes. I wish we could live in a world of peace, love, and Beach Boys harmonies. You wish we could just have our POB tour rehearsals box set. Vicious circle.

C) Get a life/ job and, or- take another hit! Jeeezzzzz

Is that really the best you can do? At least be creative, like "oh, Mr. Real Beach Boy, sir, you ruffian! Go cornhole the man on the moon!" Because if you don't, I'm gonna call the cops!

 :lol

Seriously though man, I do feel your pain about the POB rehearsals. I want to hear them as much as you want to hear them. But hanging around these boards too much and learning too much about the band's personal lives and politics is a known cure for being a wide-eyed newbie. Around here, and on other Beach Boys forums as well, there's a sort of unwritten guideline for potential new releases -

"I'll believe it when it's in my hands/I see it."

Even the POB reissue was greeted with those responses when it was announced as being on the "list" back in 2002, and even way back in 2007 when the ball really began rolling. Christ, even the rumors of new bootlegs are met with the same response sometimes! I even had a running joke when a BWPS tour rumbled around the underground way back in 2002 before the official announcement, and even after the official announcement; I joked that Brian would come onstage and play Ding Dang for 40 minutes and say it was the Smile album. :)

In spite of the ease and much lower cost of manufacturing/distribution inherent with the internet, Sony is more likely to put out something that will  sell. The POB tour rehearsals need to be boatlogged - it's a process where they are put on a boat and logged into a journal, so everyone can know what is on the tapes.

Yes sir, if only some boatloggers would boatlog the POB tour rehearsals... that's the only way we will ever hear it. Because the corporate fat-cat-big wig well-heeled big wheels are not going to put out a three disc set of the rehearsals for an album from the 70s that they finally just saw their way to re-releasing.
