I think I'm excited? Maybe I'll have to find a friend with a TV.
I'm also a little scared.

That's really funny! I was just asking my wife last night (who loves the show) what b-list celebrities were left to do that show-and here's my answer!

Oh, they're gonna be performing. I thought they were gonna dance  :-D

I'd prefer to see Brian strutting his stuff on the show, perhaps similar to when he was promoting 'Brian Wilson'!

The Beach Boys are featured in a recent video games for Nintendo Wii, who's name escapes me, but the song is "I Get Around" and the point of the game is to mimick the dance moves you see on the TV screen. I wonder if this is part of a tie-in to that? I think it will be good publicity.

The band themselves aren't pictured; they have the outline of a single dancer, and you have to copy it. At first, I didn't want to try it, but after my friends talked me into it, it was actually a lot of fun. They were the only band in the game that had been around that long. Most of the music was recent pop music, of the Britney Spears variety. I think it's cool that they included the band.

Crowd seemed to enjoy it, though it went by quickly. Harmonies from the band were really good from what I heard. Pretty sure I saw David Marks with them! It was a medley of California Girls/Kokomo/and Fun Fun Fun. Stamos tweeted about it & he's off to see Paul @ the Hollywood Bowl

I saw the clip, and I even though it was a very quick medley, I was impressed with how well the touring band sounds. I can't wait to see them again next time they come around.

Harmonies were good, fresh. California Girls a little slow for my liking personally, I like it sped up but it was true to the original record. It was not Mike's best night vocally, I'm not sure he sold any tickets to a 50th reunion show tonight. He sounded timid singing.

Pretty sure I saw David Marks with them!

You're talking about the tall guy in the black hat playing bass? That wasn't David Marks, I think it was Randell Kirsch (with a beard).

Musical guest stars aside, I thought the rest of the show was a tough slog to get through. But then again, I'm not much of a fan of that type of programming, anyway. Your mileage may vary.

Unfortunately I have to agree with Emdeeh on that type of programming. Overactivity somehow leaves me bored.

And AFAIK David Marks most likely won't play with Mike&Bruce's band anymore.

Well, the performance was good, although much of it seems to have been pre-recorded (which is common practice), though not Mike's lead. Anyway, this is on of the first times that I thought Mike's clothing looked cool. Nice run through the songs, you can't expect more for such a tv-show.

Brian definitely isn't anywhere close to where he used to be vocally, but even though he's different, hes still sometimes fun to listen to.

Mike on the other hand, sounds like garbage. What the hell happened to his voice? He sounds like crap. Its not like he spent years smoking or abusing drugs. Brian and Al's voices are so much stronger. Maybe it is all those years of touring taking their toll. After hearing this, I'm not sure the BB could ever reunite unless Mike really got back on top of his game.

Bruce sounds weak too. I dont get it. Mick Jagger and Paul McCartney and many others still sound strong. Somebody needs to explain what the hell happened to these guys.

Man, you guys are pretty harsh. It sounded at least as good as ANY performance I've seen of Brian in the last ten years. The Guy is Seventy Years Old for crap's sake and maybe just doesn't have the lung power he once had.
I thought it was corny but pretty good, and I bet if mike were in the studio he could still do a really nice vocal. I don't see what all the fuss is about.

Means, things are not as they have been recently. It was great to see David with M&B in 2008, but I seriously doubt I'll see him with them in the foreseeable future. Shame.

I've seem Mike with a similarly weak voice -  can't recall whether it was Manchester 08 or Glasgow '04 at the moment - did they play Glasgow another time recently?

But it's never spoiled the enjoyment of what's essentially a great show.

He handled the TM section – Everyone's In Love With You and All This Is That - pretty well. I wonder if his voice is growing better-suited to the softer songs?

He's not a teenager any more -  anyone on this board who expects to be able to hold a better note by the time they're his age, step up to the plate now!

We love to knock Mike but forget that he's flown the flag for the full 49 years and can still just about hold a very decent note.

This show looked fine to to -  and I bet it shifts a few more CDs to put more brass in everyone's pockets.

The performance had a lot of energy, but Mike ought to consider turning some of the lead over to the younger guys, he just can't put it out any more.  It would have been nice if Al could have belted one out.

Bruce said on another Board that Mike has had a servere bronchitis for ten days.

That is the worst vocal performance I have ever heard from Mike.  With such severe bronchitis, he should have canceled if possible, rather than go on national tv.  Or, even better, Mike should have brought Al on board that evening and had him do Mike's leads for the show!  ;D  The rest of the band, as usual, sounded great.

Re(2): Beach Boys on Dancing With The Stars
Posted on March 31, 2010 at 05:18:36 PM by Bruce Johnston

Tom:
We pre-recorded the band track(s) for Dancing With The Stars and then sang everything live-to track on the show. Mike Love has had severe bronchitis for ten days but he still sang his lead live. I'm sure he was struggling but it 'is what it is.'
Regarding the show: It was fantastic to spend the whole day around everyone who has anything to do with Dancing With The Stars....It's the most amazing teamwork on that show. We even ran onto Joel Peskin who was playing in the TV house band. Joel was in our BB horn section in 1969 and he's the recorded alto solo on our recording of "Kokomo."

That explains it, I heard Mike in December and he sounded much, much better.  The reunion concert aspect does scare me, I'm just not confident Mike can handle the leads to impress and really put on a good show considering he would have the most leads and his voice just seems so fragile. The years of touring no doubt have taken their toll. I'm only slightly more confident in Brian, you can restrict Brian's leads more by tailoring the set list but it's tough when your lead singer of the hits  doesn't have a strong voice.

It's a relief that it's a temporary voice problem. That's what I'd thought and hoped it was while wincing/watching. It sure won't sell many tickets. Wishing him a speedy recovery.

Okay -- can we all remember this thread when someone goes on about Brian "not having it anymore" after some live / televised performance?

Mike's apologists would have you believe that he hasn't skipped a beat since the 60s, but now we have clear, audible evidence that it just isn't so.

And yes, I understand. He had throat trouble. *Ahem.* The same throat trouble that by coincidence affects everyone when they either lip sync or give a publicly subpar performance.

With the Summer concert season almost upon us, we'll find out soon enough if Mike's singing quality problems last night were indeed a result of some sickness, or someone on here will see a show and make a similar report. I think he indeed was hampered by a throat and/or lung condition because I have never heard him sound so bad/weak.

As a Michael apologist (point your spears someplace else, please), that clip was painful. Lip-synced or poor engineering or bronchitis, it doesn't matter. I do notice that from about 2005 onward, Michael sometimes has a few effects on his microphone when he's in concert to cushion him a bit as his voice is prone to fizzle out if he's singing bass. Certainly understandable considering he doesn't have as many voices behind him to cover him as Brian does. But this is hardly a "typical" show for touring Beach Boys. Even in regular shows with a basic setlist in recent years Michael's been in good voice for his age. Bruce's voice is the one that's shot...he's had bronchitis since 1991!

Whoa, that could get you in trouble man. He could answer you and say that he could warble at your funeral. Bruce is tight man.

His voice just didn't age well, man. The bronchitis thing was a joke on my part, obviously. Bruce can't really do the fast-paced songs as well anymore. Like Do You Wanna Dance; he sounds like he has some trouble with that one, like he's hoarse. When he does ballads he sounds pretty good.

Hey, we're lucky they're even still touring. Well, maybe I'm the one who's lucky since the cool people here don't like the Mike and Bruce band. :)

The truth is both Mike Love and Bruce are alc..... Lets just say they like to drink... and drink ...and drink. Watching them stagger to a gig (yes to a gig!) in Australia recently was a huge shock. Watching them crawl out of the venue 2 hours after the gig ended was.. well worth the photos that were taken lol. And this happened every day of the tour! They are well past their prime and should retire before they embarass themselves and even kill themselves.
Long Live Brian!

Reading the whole topic (on the Hoffman board), it looks like another excuse for some people to immediatley give the current Beach Boys line-up some negative critics. Says more about the posters than the BB though...

O, and I'm not saying that because I'm a huge fan of Mike's BB's. It's just that reading this particular post - describing them as alcoholics and ending with "Long Live Brian!" - can't be taken too seriously.

Just had a look at a few clips on youtube from the Mike and Bruce Australian Tour this year and a few points. They sound fine. Shows were done with a symphony orchestra, a lot of people they won't tour with again so whats wrong with a few drinks after a gig? Whats the writers definition of 'crawling' BTW. On all fours? Somehow I doubt it.

The vocals seemed to be live (the leadvocals for sure, I'd have to watch it again to listen to the background, but Bruce mentioned they were live) and it's the usual way in TV to pre-record the soundtrack. The Beach Boys did that ever since the 60s. Brian used a pre-recorded song when he promoted his christmas-album. IIRC it was "God rest ye..."

Thanks for the link.  I missed this.  Personally, I wish they would have just done the full version of Kokomo.  Would have fit the show better.

If Mike was that sick, they should have come up with a Plan B before then. Having him try to struggle through was not the solution. In talking to non BB fans, they couldn't believe how awful he sounded. I tried to explain he had bronchitis. Either switch songs or give someone else the lead for the night.

From DelawareOnline.com:

The Beach Boys, the California rock band with Mike Love as its only original member, performed on this week’s “Dancing with the Stars,” which got plenty of low scores from critics. The Chicago Sun Times didn’t hold anything back, writing, “Their off-key solos and off-pitch harmonies were an embarrassment.”

This was my first contact with the Mike Love Beach Boys, and the band itself sounded good....but Mike sounded rough. Hope he feels better.

I think a lot of it is Mike's become a much more gentle person as he's gotten older, he's trying to be serious about his spirituality I gander, and it leaves him sounding slightly neutered.  That song he did for the Beach Boys Hallmark disc a few years ago sounded pretty good, even with his gentle, peaceful vocals.  "Cool Head, Warm Heart"

Screw Steve Hoffman

... well, we have had similar discussions on this board as well... and there are quite a few posters on that board that do know how to keep a discussion civil... so what's the problem with Hoffman?

Well his comment seemed out of line, I'm against all Mike hate, even on this board.

Only to be honest don't think I've come across a comment as venomous on here, Anti Mike comments on here are usually laced with really fine humor  ;D

the comment was out of line, but it wasn't "Steve Hoffman" 's comment, just one member of that board.

Oh right, nothing against the Steve Hoffman board then, just the ignorant poster
