Title: River Deep, Mountain High/Heroes and Villians
Post by: A Million Units In Jan! on March 06, 2010, 09:10:26 AM
So the similarity between the bass lines in these two songs is almost....identical, with the 'River' bass line faster than H&V, but pretty much the same. Heroes was started in earnest in October, and River was released in September. Obviously, Brian borrowed from Phil, creating that driving bass line that defines the song. This got me thinking that the May attempt at H&V must have been quite different, because the song seems to be built around that bass line. Perhaps it was variations on YAMS as Al Kooper has suggested. Any thoughts?

This is a really interesting point. I didn't know this. When did Brian first play the descending main part of Heroes to VDP?

I thought the first session for Heroes was May 11th '66. So that would be a while before the single was released.

Well, when did they first meet? Was it the summer of '66? Or earlier? I mean, River came out in September, and I would assume that Heroes was already formed. Is it just a coincidence? Or are both of these songs borrowing from another song that has that same bassline?

Brian attended the "River Deep, Mountain High"-session. So the question would be, when took the recording session place?
The similarity to "Save The Last Dance For Me" is even more striking.

According to the BBC (http://www.bbc.co.uk/northernireland/music/story_behind/riverdeep.shtml (http://www.bbc.co.uk/northernireland/music/story_behind/riverdeep.shtml)), March 7, 1966 at Gold Star Studios - two months before Brian laid down the first version of Heroes And Villains.

That's correct.  Mick Jagger was also in attendance at the session.  Tina sang live to the WOS orchestra playing - the session tape has been booted.

Well, I guess that settles it, then. Brian heard the session, fell in love with that bass line and used it on Heroes.

I know it's almost unheard by a lot of folks (but it's out there), but Brian's 1980 recording of River Deep Mountain High has an amazing sound on it. Kind of Love You-esque, but full of that "Brian" sound. He never finished it; only getting as far as a backing track and most of the lead vocal, but there's a lot of potential in there for a great cover.

Now, why the dude (or chick) who leaked it in the first place leaked it as a truly crappy 32kbps MP3 is beyond my comprehension (read: covering their ass), but we take what we can get. The magic is in there, beneath the tape hiss and digital artifacting.  :lol

Surely the Mexican vibe of H & V lends itself to that bass line anyway?

Any aural evidence of BW being there on that boot?

Brian was really belting out the vocal too. He certainly was feelin' it. The one I heard was 128kbps, but yeah, the hiss was unbearable.
