Title: Bruce and SMiLE
Post by: A Million Units In Jan! on February 25, 2010, 01:55:37 PM
So, how often was Bruce around during the SMiLE sessions? I know he had to have been around somewhat, but just how active was his participation? I know that he claimed to have not been involved in the Smiley Smile sessions because 'It had all become too weird' by then (and I'd love to know exactly the weird things were).  I think I've heard him on some H&V sessions....

Bruce was technically a member of the band in 1966, so he was around for the Smile vocal sessions. He can be heard on the vocal session tapes. Listen.

I had been wondering this lately, too. I really have trouble picking him out on any song except some of the backups on "Wonderful". Wouldn't shock me if he was on "Heroes and Villains", too, but I still can't pick him out.

He's on the most, if not all of the H&V vocal sessions i've heard. He was a useful asset for Brian then i think, seeing as he could pretty much double his parts in the blend - he did it live, right? That's also probably why we can't pick him out in other songs we don't have session tapes for.

I think you're absolutely right...aside from Wonderful, you don't really hear him on Smile, but for something like Heroes especially, I'm sure he was there.  Too many vocals going on for him not to be.

Capitol Records Popular Session Worksheets exist for almost all of the "SMiLE" vocal sessions, and almost all of them indicate Bruce (and the other five) were all present.  Not so the ones for "Smiley Smile".

Why Bruce missed Smiley Smile? Was it because of the same reasons he didn't went to Hawaii? Is he on any track, not counting GV, H&V and (possibly) You're welcome? Today he is quite fond of that LP.

I believe the quote is something like 'it was too weird for me', which i guess applies to both Hawaii and the sessions at Brian's.

Is the $5000 worth of hash thing actually true, BTW? It seems too good to be so....
