For those of you that only know CD's, what a wonderful world it was when we had warm, rich, vinyl to listen to. Anyway, the album sounded great as always both through headphones and the speakers - nothing like being taken to another place while wearing headphones and getting hit with the: "Ah-oooooooooom bop dit dit" of "This Whole World" - ah sweet ecstasy! Long live The Beach Boys. This Whole World fades out WAAAYYYY too early!! Agreed!! I thought that ever since the first time I heard it. Best moment in the song, not that the rest of the song is bad, I love the song!! But that's definitely my favorite part!! It is likely that this is the first time since possibly the album's release 40 years ago that this master was used.
Perhaps someday we'll get to see it on CD......... It is likely that this is the first time since possibly the album's release 40 years ago that this master was used. Perhaps someday we'll get to see it on CD......... I love the new Sunflower LP, and would highly recommend it to everyone. But, I have three original pressings of Sunflower, (my original 8-21-70 purchase and two promo copies), all of which sound totally alike, and there are some significant EQ differences between the new LP and the original. (I also have a number of other pressings of Sunflower, both domestic and imports, which vary in EQ from each other and from the original pressings.) Overall, the new LP has significantly more bass with slightly less strident vocals, both of which are nice sonic improvements compared to the original. But, on the new LP, Deirdre and Tears in the Morning have basically the same amount of bass as the original LP, Slip on Through has slightly less bass (which is unfortunate from a listening standpoint), and Got to Know the Woman has slightly less treble (also unfortunate from a listening standpoint). It could make sense that the entire sonic balance on every song throughout the album of a new pressing made from an original flat master used for the original LP pressings could be different from the original LP. But, that is not the case here, as the EQ varies from song to song in a manner in which it does not on the original pressings. So, if this newly found master was used for the original LP, some of the tracks, (and conceivably even all of them) were further individually EQ'd before making the original pressings. Most likely the EQ was applied during the original cut, the cutting engineer having decided what changes needed to be made while rehearsing the cut. |
