Alright, we've all experienced those early Smile mixes with songs that really didn't belong, but since they were rare or 'smile-like,' they were included like: Can't Wait Too Long, Good Vibrations with original lyrics (which I partially think is why Brian included that on BWPS), cool cool water.
Anyone know of any other smile mixes or made their own which have BB songs that are smile inspired/like like with Diamond Head or Country Air or Sail Plane Song? I'd be interested in seeing some tracklist. I would think someone put together a tracklist of what Brian thought of for smile tunes before BWPS was made (which included Time to Get Alone and Sail on Sailor I believe).

I was using Time to Get Alone right after I'm in Great Shape.  It fits lyrically but not musically so I've dropped it.  I use an edit of Can't Wait Too Long with an early take of With Me Tonight and slip in the snippet of Bachrach's Walk on By.  I use Diamond Head for the elements.  It works much better than Love to Say Dada.  Fall Breaks is my earth element.  I also use Little Pad & Cool, Cool Water.  I've gone back and forth with the single and the album version of CCW.  Old Man River is used in my Americana suite.

I tend to use Can't Wait to Long in my Smil mixes these days. I got the idea to use Can't Wait to Long from a Smile mix someone posted on Youtube. The poster acknowledged it was not really part of Smile but put it in because it was very Smile like and added some Carl presence. It does fit in well. I also use Let the Wind Blow in my Elements suite. It's a holdover from my first try at making Smile running order when I was not overly familiar with the Beach Boys' discography or the Smile history timeline. Even though I know now it has nothing to do with Smile I still think it works well. I made a version of Vegetables that begins with the Smiley Smile version, segues into the Smile sessions version then ends with a short edit of Mama Says.

I like the short snippets on Hawthorne of "Can't Wait Too Long" and "With Me Tonight". I used to use that "Spanish Guitar" snippet, thinking it was from the SMiLE sessions, but, after I read that it was from Friends, I removed it. "Diamond Head" is sooooo perfect for a SMiLE mix, but....And, "You're Welcome" has been my opener for about five years now.

It depends on my frame of mind. When the "purist" in me takes over, all of the above are excluded. But, when I hear somebody else's mix using "the kitchen sink", and it blows me away, I find a place for all of them. :police:

Interesting because, IIRC, "Time to get alone" and "Diamond head" were both on the list Brian gave Darian which included songs for Smile

Something I've always thought kinda odd; on 'Do It Again', they use the 'Woodshop' sounds at the end. However, in 'Little Pad' they use a sawing sound effect that was new. Why not use the 'Woodshop' sounds there?

Question #15.465 on the 'doesn't really matter/who the hell knows' list.

I've pondered that as well about do it again.


BTW, using Cant wait too Long really works with smile because it uses that same bass line I believe or something or another...so it's another one of the musical pieces that floats in and out of smile, like the heroes theme, GV theme, etc.

The original plan was to just play songs from around the 66-68 era with a focus on Smile, but not exclusively Smile or Smile related tracks. That's why "Time to Get Alone" and "Diamond Head" were on the list.

I always thought the alternate version of Time to Get Alone with the horn section/whistling was smile-like....with that flutter tone and everything  ;)

yeah, it's pretty much the same baseline that can be heard in the SMiLE-version of Wind Chimes.
