Title: Seeing Mike+Bruce in three days
Post by: mikeyj on January 31, 2010, 10:58:46 PM
...and I am pretty excited since I've never been inside the Sydney Opera House even though I live in Sydney, it will be the first time I've seen an orchestra (some day I'd like to see an actual classical piece live) and it's the first time I'm seeing Mike and Bruce. So what can I expect from them? I mean in terms of a set-list?

By the way, is there anyone else on this board going on Thursday night?

I've never seen an orchestral Mike & Bruce show but the band shows in the UK have been terrific in recent years.

Hope you have a blast!

That's cool, hope you have a great time!  :)

Though I wouldn't expect a rarities show. Maybe a Good Timin' here and a Ballad of Ole Betsy there.

Thanks Wee Helper and Beach Boy. I'm sure it'll be great! :)

If they do Ballad of Ole Betsy I'll be pretty happy as that's always been one of my favourites!

Not necessarily a "rarities" show, but I had thought they did tend to play a few obscure songs here and there?

Who sings lead on Heroes ?

How DARE they play "Heroes and Villains".  Let me guess, it's the bastardized single version, WITHOUT the Cantina verse that is damn well part of the song?

Actually, if they did sing the Cantina verse, that might be even worse... kinda slapping Brian in the face.

That's a little extreme, man. Heroes and Villains was a Beach Boys single. I'm not going to tell you how to feel, but I think it's their right to play songs from The Beach Boys catalog because they've been granted permission to tour under The Beach Boys name.

As he yelled, fist pumping in the air, "FUM HIM THE MOURDOROUS BASTARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

For what it's worth, Michael and Bruce have been playing Heroes and Villains as early as 2000.

Who sings lead on Heroes ?

John Cowsill (Al's part) and Christian Love (Carl's part)...same arrangement as the '73 "In Concert" album.

Back in 2000 when they played it, Chris Farmer sang the entire thing, if I remember correctly.

lawl.

"Single version"? Don't you mean the album version??? The album version doesn't have the Cantina section. Sorry - it isn't "bastardized", that's how the final version of the song is.

Do you really expect them to play a version akin to the mix that Brian abandoned? Or his 2004 arrangement? Come on - don't be ridiculous.

I still dunno whether this pic is Photoshopped or whether the band had a group booking at a Botox & Tango Tanning Centre.

Or is this not the band at all? Are these the collectable figures being sold at gigs?

Cool pic, Bruce looks much better without a hat!

Carl medley? What do they usually play?

Little Deuce Coupe
Shut Down
409
Little Old Lady From Pasadena sometimes
I Get Around
Still Cruisin'
plus Don't Worry Baby and Ballad Of Ole Betsy were played right before the medley, if you consider them as car songs.  :)

In the mid80ies they even added Little GTO and Hey Little Cobra.

Mike and Bruce are playing here in Dublin sometime in the Summer, I was up for going till I went to get my ticket and the only tickets left were 85 euro or something.

I don't know, after seeing Brian last summer I'm not too pushed on going.

Look at AC/DC, whom I love btw, but their setlist is always the same. Mike tries really hard to keep fresh the last couple of years. It's funny when people say he should play this and that but I remember when the Beach Boys played 'Til I Die in 2004 they said "how could they put the song into the set, it is embarrassing, disrespectful" etc.

They've shifted things around down here in Oz -- after the overture, they begin with "Surfin'" (half recorded half live), "California Girls" was later in the set, "Disney Girls" was in the first half and "California Dreamin'" in the second.  Big surprise?  They played "Cottonfields" -- and the crowd erupted!

Quote
Orchestral Prelude: IN MY ROOM
- Second Set -
HEROES AND VILLAINS
SLOOP JOHN B.
WOULDN'T IT BE NICE
THEIR HEARTS WERE FULL OF SPRING
DISNEY GIRLS
HERE TODAY
YOU STILL BELIEVE IN ME
GOD ONLY KNOWS
GOOD VIBRATIONS
HELP ME RHONDA

And this bit was totally rearranged, to create a Pet Sounds / Smile mini-set --

GOD ONLY KNOWS
HERE TODAY
YOU STILL BELIEVE IN ME
HEROES AND VILLAINS (John and Christian blew the crowd away with this one)
GOOD VIBRATIONS
THEIR HEARTS WERE FULL OF SPRING
CALIFORNIA DREAMIN'
SLOOP JOHN B
WOULDN'T IT BE NICE
HELP ME RHONDA
...etc...

Show was a mixed bag in the first half, but when the harmonies really kicked in for the Pet Sounds numbers, they really caught fire...

Cheers,
Jon Blum

The American tour last year, in my eyes, finally put to sleep that limping, nearly dead horse of a thought process among a significant portion of the European fans (specifically our Blueboard friends) that Brian only cares about them and only puts on good shows for them. Of course they never came out and said it like that but it has always been the prevalent attitude; those who choose to deny or question it are kidding themselves in my estimation.

Back in 2006 when Brian hooked up with Al for the brief November tour, this was one of those big deals that only happen once in a blue moon (especially over in Glenside which is only a hop, skip, and jump away from East Bumblefuck), and people came from all over to see it. I went to Glenside to see Brian and Al at the Keswick. Needless to say, fans from all over flocked to the Keswick Tavern, which, to this day, has been the place to be for pre-show fan meet-ups in Glenside. I got to meet a lot of my good friends who I hung around with at the Keswick beforehand, including the Brian Goddess herself, Katie (hey you!), my good friend and confidante Dirk from The Nearest Faraway Place on Yahoo (excellent guy, one of the best fans out there), and I got to meet Susan for the first time, and she was a lot of fun. Through all of this, I got to meet a bunch of Europeans who also came to the Keswick to see Brian and Al that night, and I will say briefly that I detected such a snobby and condescending attitude from a good portion of them pointed at all of the American fans in the place - almost like Americans were not worthy of seeing Brian Wilson in concert. That rubbed me the wrong way then and rubs me the wrong way to this day.

I always wanted to know as I heard it murmered once but I could be wrong: is Christian Love just in it for the money?

The touring Beach Boys today are a quality group (I saw them two years ago), but just as a note I compared audience YT footage of Darian singing "Darlin'" and Cowsill singing "Darlin'" No comparison. Still, they are a good group.

Christian said himself that he does it as a way to earn some cash, as he has no interest in the music beyond what his duties require.

So often here and on other boards I sense an animosity toward people who are (even "may be" ... musical McCarthyism!) in it for the money. Not that there was judgment here, but I'm talking generally. I just don't see the problem. Plumbers, electricians, web developers, cashiers, customer service representatives ... these people work for money. Why not with art? Is it jealousy that they're somehow stealing from more passionate (but presumably less commercially viable) artists? I don't see why there ought to be any moral imperative in the arts. If someone is capable of making a living by [task], more power to him or her. I don't see motivation as a relevant issue.

Title: Re: Seeing Mike+Bruce in three days

Probably because the hardcore Brianistas believe Brian was only in it for art and couldn't have cared less about any financial gains.

I'm not one to take what BW says in interviews too seriously, but if there is one thing he has been consistent about throughout his career, it's that he wants traditional (popular and financial) success. In fact, that really be the one thing he has been consistent about.

That can't be literally true though as he's written songs of his own and, on occasions, performed them at BBs gigs I believe.

I think Mr. Moore said "the music", referring to Beach Boys' music. He does a good job IMO.
