Is an original copy of the Vigotone 2 CD SMILE from 1993, complete with the mini-poster, booklet, etc., worth anything these days?

I enquired about such an item recently and was gobsmacked by the expected price. More than I could afford...

It is morally indefensible to listen to such an object, let alone to possess it. That said, it is a rather fine collection, or so I hear.

Oh, yes, I meant, erm, afford as in damage to my self-esteem and spiritual well-being. Ownership of such an item would condemn one to the eternal flame, especially if you listen to such blasphemies as Mrs O'Leary's Coo.

Still amazing how after 17 years, this is still the finest collection of Smile music to be found anywhere. Sure, a few holes due to the material available at the time, but arguably the most satisfying collection as far as listening is concerned.

Considering the "Sea of Tunes" single LP of Smile (a vinyl pressing of the Sea of Tunes Unsurpassed Masters Vol. 16 one CD Smile compilation) went recently for $100 on ebay, I would expect the Vigotone 2 CD would go for $100-$200, if anyone were so unethical as to sell or purchase such a verboten item.

Could you imagine what one of those 'Sea Of Tunes' SMiLE box sets would sell for? I wouldn't dream of selling mine....er, I mean, buying one of those.

Idly wondering how much a complete SOT CD collection would command these days... assuming I possessed such a thing, of course. Purely hypothetically.

Good Lord!  :o :o :o   I have a mint condition (never played) SOT vinyl, signed by Brian in a frame with a SMiLE backstage pass and a front row centre ticket from the SMiLE tour plus the original 2CD CD set tucked away in my collection. Perhaps I should see my bank manager.  ::)

How do the Unsurpassed Masters relate to Sea of Tunes sets?

Apparently, a vinyl of the Vigotone Smile goes for around $250. The CD, about the same.

The combined SOT volumes would probably go for a few thousand bucks.

That's nuts.  That SOT LP can be easily found for $20.  It has to be the most commonly available Smile boot available these days.

I had a close friend who has the actual SOT stuff (including Smile). Was always just a little envious since I only have sucky CDRS of all that!

I have the 2nd Smile bootleg with a note apologizing for "here come de honey man" with the signature on it as Nancy Regan  :lol. My other Smile boot on vinyl is an SOT copy and in green vinyl.

Has anyone heard of the Beach Boys Journals? They came in big tin ,embossed cases? They came out  around 1995.

I have Volume 2 - Pet sounds on.  Very cool set.

There's a CD Vigotone set on Ebay currently. Stands at $ 200+ and a day and a half to go.

That's absurd, and eventually that price will break. Eventually someone will release a newer, more complete, better sounding set, and make that one obsolete.

I've seen this happen with a few things; I had some CDs by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles that were fetching high prices for a while...then somebody remastered them and nobody cares about the old ones.

Capitol Records will eventually see the opportunity they have and twist the right persons arm to make it happen.

The right person's arm belongs to one Mr. Brian Douglas Wilson. And the ball has been in his court for years. He has final say on the recordings being released. I've said this, oh, about a thousand times.

I think that's been understood by the majority of people posting here for some time. However, with Mr. Wilson's interests being heavily influenced by his management and inner circle, and all of the members of the Beach Boys getting up there in age, I believe sooner or later, it will inevitably see the light of day.

When Brian stops touring, his archives of recordings will be the last real cash cow to be exploited. That includes the original Smile session tapes.

It's also pretty common knowledge that Brian is in possession of professionally assembled collections of his demos and other various outtakes. There was an interview with him a while back about them. And a photo of him with these CD sets.

I've had it whispered gently in my ear that said CD, which was suspiciously prominent in said photo, was in fact a wind-up.  :)

And, he's not in possession of some recent outtakes...

Yeah, best to be careful what you're talking about as regards unreleased music - we wouldn't want to go to the dog pound. :)

I recall that. A picture of a happy Brian, I think he sat at a table in his house, and on that table there was a tiny stack of CDs looking like promos, and called 'Unreleased Recordings Vol 1-3 or so'. Think it was in MOJO or Uncut. Slowly the 'news' trickled in with Brianistas... but nothing happened after that.

Apparently there are two (or more?) versions of the original Vigotone "Smile" CD. What's this all about? What are the differences?

True. I bought a mint copy of on vinyl at a London music shop for £10 about three years ago. What, now it's worth £200+???? Methinks not.

The Sot single cd can be had for $40 if you know where to look.

If you're talking about the Smile Vigo 110/111 2-CD set, I don't know of different ones. Same with VT-163, Heroes & Vibrations. If you're talking about vinyl, then yes, there were 3 or 4 different ones.

Thanks for the input. Yes, I was referring to the Vigotone Smile CD. I've read that there are two different versions, but they seem to have identical track listings, so I'm not sure what's up with that. Better sound? Seems strange.

I don't have an original Vigotone 2CD set but I do have a few subsequent re-releases on a different label which came in a single card sleeve. A bootleg of a bootleg.

Would love an original but last time I was offered one the price was way over what I can afford these days.
