Title: PET SOUNDS: Get to the bottom of lyrics with Wordle Post by: Ed Roach on December 12, 2009, 11:15:47 AM Found this interesting, but I'm posting it w/o having gone there yet:
ALBUM ANALYZER Get to the bottom of lyrics with Wordle By Randall Roberts In an ongoing effort to better understand the many classic albums of L.A., we’ve come upon an equation that gets to the heart of the matter without much thinking, analysis, verbiage or any of those other “old-model” music criticism techniques. Specifically, we’ve been enjoying Wordle.net, the “word cloud”–generating Web site that analyzes words based on the frequency of occurrence. The process is shockingly simple: Just cut and paste a bunch of text into a box at the site, and within moments a word cloud appears, and adjusts font size to coincide with the number of appearances. A few weeks ago we input the entirety of the Beach Boys’ classic Pet Sounds into the software, and came up with a revealing glimpse at the melancholy within one of the most important albums of the 1960s. This past week we had fun with N.W.A’s Straight Outta Compton. (For up-to-the-minute West Coast Sound word clouds of classic L.A. albums, check our Web site for this regular feature.) For this installment, we’ve moved into 1980s punk-rock L.A. and tossed all the confusing, depressed, drunken, hardcore lyrics of Black Flag’s Damaged into Wordle. With songs such as “Rise Above,” “T.V. Party” and “Gimme Gimme Gimme,” the 1981 album is a touchstone of rock & roll angst. http://www.laweekly.com/2009-12-10/music/cloud-of-depression/ http://www.wordle.net/create Title: Re: PET SOUNDS: Get to the bottom of lyrics with Wordle Post by: DonnaK on December 12, 2009, 10:00:03 PM Ed, it never showed the actual results of what they did. I personally think you need to spend more time at the beach or somewhere else besides that particular website. Just a thought.........!
Love ya!!! Just go to http://www.wordle.net/create cut & paste anything, and you'll be amazed. I did try a few from Pet Sounds, then went to POB. Here's the lyrics to Farewell My Friend:
Farewell my friend My beautiful friend Farewell You take the high road And I'll take the low road And we'll meet again Farewell my friend I love you In a funny way You take the high road I'll take the low road And we will meet again Farewell my friend Oh I want to see you again Oh farewell Farewell Oh I want to see you again Farewell Oh I'm on the mountain again Oh farewell Oh I want to see you again Oh my friend Oh that's when I'll see you again Farewell Oh I want to see you again Paste them in the wordle box & hit go - then try things like Randomize... Title: Re: PET SOUNDS: Get to the bottom of lyrics with Wordle Post by: Ed Roach on December 13, 2009, 11:51:20 AM Cool, right? Also, if you click the link to the article in the L.A.Weekly, it does show one example, Black Flag's "Damaged".
(Must admit, I can't find the papers link to the "Pet Sounds" album, either. But again, I did start with some "Pet Sounds" myself. Check out something like "That's Not Me": http://www.wordle.net/create I had to prove that I could make it alone But that's not me I wanted to show how independent I'd grown now But that's not me I could try to be big in the eyes of the world What matters to me is what I could be to just one girl I'm a little bit scared Cause I haven't been home in a long time You needed my love And I know that I left at the wrong time My folks when I wrote them Told 'em what I was up to said that's not me I went through all kinds of changes Took a look at myself and said that's not me I miss my pad and the places I've known And every night as I lay there alone I will dream I once had a dream So I packed up and split for the city I soon found out that my lonely life wasn't so pretty I'm glad I went now I'm that much more sure that we're ready I once had a dream So I packed up and split for the city I soon found out that my lonely life wasn't so pretty I once had a dream So I packed up and split for the city I soon found out that my lonely life wasn't so pretty And again, the coolest part I've found is to hit RANDOMIZE after you've got it up Title: Re: PET SOUNDS: Get to the bottom of lyrics with Wordle Post by: Andrew G.
