The woman who wrote this article is either ignorant about calypso or she's an idiot.  At one point she refers to the "authentic calypsonian Harry Belafonte."  Belafonte was lampooned by authentic calypsonians as a poser.  But that's just for starters.

Some of her assertions are infuriating. It's a PC take on calypso, a genre which is notoriously UN-PC.

I'll be curious if you or anyone else here has a different take than I do.

Another article about Parks' 'calypso-' or Caribbean albums was written and published earlier this year by respected Parks-researcher Dale Carter (who is absolutely not an ignorant idiot - on the contrary!).
"Beyond the Stars and Stripes: Charting Van Dyke Parks' new world musical voyage". This one will not be available online - so to read it you'd have to order a copy of the magazine 'Popular Music', vol. 28/2, 2009.

From the couple of tracks I know of, the reissue of ETSB seems well worth getting.

VDP now tweeting http://twitter.com/Van_Dyke__Parks

Somehow I find his presence very reassuring
