Title: Gershwin facts and figures
Post by: Wirestone on November 09, 2009, 12:01:36 PM
What we know so far, from various interviews, etc. (The one I did, the new one with BW and Jeff, and some other reports.)

-- Title (for now) of "Wilson Sings Gershwin."
-- 10-12 tracks
-- Songs include "I Loves You Porgy," "Summertime," "Someone to Watch Over Me," and "the pretty section" from Rhapsody in Blue
-- Band recorded seven basic tracks on Oct. 19, 20 and 21 (the day before latest tour began)
-- A couple of tracks will be Wilson completions/arrangements of unfinished Gershwin tunes
-- Band members generally pleased (Jeff impressed by arrangements, optimistic FB messages)
-- Band to reassemble to record the rest in December
-- Photos show Linnett at console, recording done at Oceanway

Anything I've missed?

Can't add much, but I do hope they change the album title

Well, that was from Brian's mouth -- he's the same one who wanted to call "Imagination" "War Hero."

I'm hoping for a title change as well.  I'm also hoping he decides to include the full length Rhapsody in Blue.  This album sounds incredible though!  Absolutely can't wait for it...

I think the album would be more 'commercial' or whatever you want to call it at this stage if Brian didn't do the entire Rhapsody in Blue.  Also, if he only does part of it, that in itself is interesting.  If he only does 4 or 5 minutes of it, that leaves 3 or 4 more songs he can put on the album.

I dont' see any reason why he would include the entire piece, it'd take up what 25 minutes?

More like 13-15, but i see your point. The 'Pretty Bit' should sound absolutely great, too.

What does 'generally pleased' mean? Is that the same as a woman calling her best friend's new hairdo 'interesting'?

7 plus 5 plus 2 plus 'and then I'm trying to write....' = 15 I think????? :-\

I wanted to know what kind of work you're doing to finish these songs.

Well, we've done seven background orchestrations and we have another five to go and then we're going to do two songs that Gershwin wrote on piano that they never finished. And then I'm trying to write ... It's hard to talk about it 'cause I'm not sure where the heck it's coming from.

How about 'An Old Man's Rhapsody To God'?

Yes. That, or 'Grin'.

Ah Brian -- he's impossible to figure out. The "I'm trying to write" bit may not even refer to the Gershwin -- but I love that he's so elusive about it. There's something interesting creatively going on, that's for sure.  "I'm not sure where the heck it's coming from." Fascinating.

Well, that was from Brian's mouth -- he's the same one who wanted to call "Imagination" "War Hero."
He wanted to call GIOMH "Landy's Revenge," and BWPS was supposed to be called "Decent Vibrations." Finally, it's well-known that he considered calling  the "Brian Wilson" album "Mike Love" instead.

Sweet inanity...

Seeing the way journalists treat Brian makes me totally understand his standoffishness with them. This interview is a classic example. The interviewer did ask a few decent questions, which most don't even manage to do...

Q: Is it important to you that the band members be constant?
A: Well, we try not to lose them. Some guys threaten to quit every once in a while and we say, "No, you don't have to quit."

Q: I wanted to ask you about the George Gershwin project ...
A: Why? [abruptly]

Just outstanding.

P.S. This writer is such a punk. He describes how Brian has said he will not reunite with the Beach Boys, and then adds that "An evening with Brian Wilson, with the damaged artist singing "God Only Knows," shaky as it might be, is sure to be an infinitely more enriching experience." Dripping with sarcasm, the crucial indicator being the word "infinitely."

I do think the writer meant it.

Man ... leaning pretty heavily on the Porgy and Bess songbook there, Brian.

You know what he should do -- "I Got Rhythm." One could easily imagine a cool BB-style take on that.
