Title: The Man From Another Place
Post by: TheManFromAnotherPlace on November 09, 2009, 08:48:06 AM
Hello all.

I read this board every so often so I thought I'd finally let you all know about my music.
I'm definitely influenced by the Beach Boys especially old Smile bootlegs, Friends etc.

Anyway you can listen to my music here

Cheers!

Wonderful stuff, I recommend anyone into the BB (well you would be if you're on here!) and the High Llamas to check this out, exquisite arrangements and lovely chord patterns.

Again, more praise but I dig your stuff as well. It's all instrumentals, correct? I want to make sure I didn't miss any vocal pieces if there were any. Regardless...great stuff!

The influence is obvious and the music is great. You have a hip style. I wish, though, that you used (or possibly, better said, had access) to more organic, natural sounds. Please don't take this as an unfair criticism. It is rare for me to listen to every song on a MySpace page like I did with yours'. The music truly is wonderful and inspiring, patently borne of a creative soul. We're all, here, aficionados of sublime music, and I appreciate the marvelous qualities of your art.  I'm sure this could easily be interpreted as nitpicking, but I wouldn't have commented unless I thought the music was great. I've always been a stickler for sound - not necessarily as in recording, but of inherent tone and timbre. To my ears, I hear a lot of cold, impersonal tones, plunked out of a keyboard without much consideration, unlike the music itself.  I can't enjoy music for the notes, rhythm, and performance alone; I have to enjoy the sounds that coveys it. I could liken it to watching my favourite movie shown in nothing but shades of pink, or possibly neon/nuclear green. Or, closer to home: If Brian Wilson presented SMiLE with the same arrangement except that all the backing tracks were done played with General Midi sounds. I could appreciate the music but couldn't really enjoy it or ever listen to it.
That being said, is an extreme example and I wouldn't say that about your tracks. Ultimately, I want to say well done and keep up the good work. And I must stress that your music is a breath of fresh air, which seems harder and harder to find these days. I look forward to hearing more. Cheers, my friend.

Just one more comment: I think my comment about sound, though sincere, should not be taken as anything more than one person's opinion. After reading my last post, I realize that the subject I mention is completely subjective. Analogy guy I am: I like chocolate with almonds, some people don't.

It wasn't even worth my mentioning. I don't mean to, nor do I want to, rain on your parade. What I said was trivial. I wish there were more composers like you. Keep on delivering the sweet vibes. If it feels right, it must be.

I don't really mind the criticism to be honest, I probably even agree with you. In an ideal world my recordings would be more organic but the simple fact is I don't have the money to record things as I would really like.

All the best!
Dan

I forgot to say, it is all instrumentals. Although there might be some vocals in the future (not by me though!).

This is really fantastic stuff! Pat yourself on the back, my friend.

I don't suppose you have lyrics for "Mr. Hill"? If not, I wouldn't mind coming up with something for it. PM if interested. PM if not. :)
