Title: Brian Wilson and Marching Bands
Post by: The Heartical Don on October 15, 2009, 01:52:29 AM
This morning, whilst listening to I'm Waiting For The Day, I thought: BW might have a soft spot for marching band music. IWFTD has these powerful drums and flute patterns that make me think of marching bands. Of course, Look is another example, as is Holidays.

Are there more such songs? Perhaps Sloop John B. fits the category. Did Brian ever talk about a passion for such bands? J.P. Sousa, maybe? Other associations: Van Dyke Parks (steelbands etc.), Charles Ives (surely!), Louis Moreau Gottschalk.

I've always thought that the fast section of the break in "Here Today," with it's 2-4 beat, had a marching band feel to it.

"Trombone Dixie" and "Loop de Loop" are a couple more.

God Only Knows. I believe it technically is a march.
