Title: Surf's Up percussion
Post by: brother john on October 11, 2009, 05:49:18 AM
Hi all,

I was listening today on YouTube to rehearsals for Surf's Up, where Brian is discussing the percussive part that sounds like jewellery, and assuming that they were using sleigh bells on a stick, like Jeff uses in the live performances, though I've also seen sleigh bells in the shape of a big D.

Does anyone know, from listening to the tapes or from using the items, exactly how the sound Brian refers to is made? He talks about 'Not hitting it and doing it with your hand' and 'The more you throw it the worse it sounds'. I'd love to be able to reproduce this. Strangely on the actual record the percussion sounds mostly like closed high hat and bunch of keys.

Anyone?

BJ

You have the answer - it's a bunch of keys.

Frankie Capp told me it was either a handful of costume jewelry, keys, or a combination of the two...and yeah he tossed them from hand to hand.

I believe he showed that in Beautiful Dreamer

Wow, really? That's all you hear? Its amazingly percussive and rhythmic for just keys, but I guess if you have a good bunch of them! And I guess there must have been a lot effects on there too - EQ, a fair bit of reverb.

Thanks.
