Title: Do You Remember?
Post by: Magic Transistor Radio on October 04, 2009, 04:55:38 PM
Concerning the song from ASL lp in 1964, Mike Love was ahead of his time on this one. It would be the mid 70s before the BB were living in the past again with exception to Do It Again. Here was the BBs in their prime and Mike was already writing lyrics about the past.   ::)

Unlike Brian dragging out "Graduation Day".

Well, er, was Carl graduating around that time? Or did he even finish high school?

Was Dick Clark still on American Bandstand, were they still playing Chuck Berry riffs, was Elvis still "the king"? Goodness gracious, great balls of fire! Come to think of it, Jerry Lee was making a comeback....

Could Drive-In be living in the past also? Weren't they starting to fade at that point?

Not really-drive-ins flourished in the 50's and 60's-when land started to over appreciate in the mid to late 70's, they started disappearing rather quickly. They are still around, albiet only a few here and there. They were alot of fun in their heyday-My first job after three years in the Army was manager of a local drive in-The Family Drive-in-Clifton Heights, Pa.

I felt like Brian was tryin to gather the same feeling of this song on the 90s tune: Slightly American Music...which I actually dug!

Gene Vincent cut  a song with similar subject matter calle dStory of The Rockers, in 1973. Oh was it bad!!!!

STORY OF ROCKERS
(Jim Pewter)
GENE VINCENT (SPARK SRL1091, 1973)

It started out with Haley's Comets
A-rockin' round the clock
Well, then along came Presley
With some hillbilly rock, now
Mix it in with Carl Perkins
Chuck Berry when he's workin'
And Little Richard out of Macon
Inspired Jerry Lee to shakin'
Slow down the tempo with the Fat Man
Bring back the rhythm with Bo's band
Don and Phil and Eddie Cochran
And Buddy Holly kept a-rockin'

[Chorus]
And that's the story of the rockers
Yeah, who kept us dancin'
Everybody was movin'
And it looked [felt] so fine
Yeah, you could feel the emotion
As you looked around
Sock it to me rockers
Roll it down the line

Jump back down to to Philly
For a daily Bandstand Rock
At The Hop with Danny's Juniors
The Stroll was very hot now
Rydell, Cannon and Dion sang
While Eddy's Rebels twanged on
Soon the world a-started twistin'
With the Checker dance
The Four Seasons sang Sherry
While Barry Gordy shopped the Champs
Ike and Tina and a-Uncle Ray
Along with Shannon's Runaway

[Chorus]

The West Coast started surfin'
With the Beach Boy band
Jan and Dean and the Surfaris
Spread the songs throughout the land
And soon the Beatles from a-Liverpool
Electrified, began to rule
Roll out the Stones with Satisfaction
Mix in a bit of blues reaction
Byrds and Spoonful got in motion
With a very good time notion *
Otis Redding and Revue
Young Rascals attitude

[Chorus]

Chuck Willis, Lord Old Sam Cooke
Sock it to me, yeah,
Buddy Knox, Jimmy Bowen, Lloyd Price,
Hey don't touch that dial, I ain't through
I forgot somebody,
Bobby Darin, Larry Williams, The Blue Caps...
Here we go...

I really hate songs that are about other songs.  I'm thinking of stuff like "Rock and Roll Heaven".

BTW Gene Vincent died in 1971... maybe this song of his merely came out in 1973????

I don't know if this is on topic, but I especially hate songs like: 'Rock 'n' roll I gave you all the best years of my life', and 'Rock 'n' roll survivor'. Meh. >:(

Or "Looking Back with Love".

Well, it sounds better than: Looking Back With Luther, IMHO.

Maybe so, but Looking Back With Luther is a much better song - well it has to be!

It is. I perceive it as a modular 4-part micro-symphony featuring instruments by Harry Partch.

Good call, Shane. I just got that from the release date. Must have been late 60's or very early 70s.

Harry Partch!!! I never thought I would see his name on a thread about cheesy songs of rock n roll past! :)
