Why was Dennis blessed with the sexy gene and not Carl or Brian?

Carl was cute but pudgy. He probably got friend-zoned a lot before the band got big.

Brian is/was ....  well, in his teens and early 20s I suppose he looked kind of dreamy and handsome.

Sort of like a cross between Dennis and Carl.

Brian's change of hairstyle, from the slicked back to flopped down, signaled the end of the handsomeness and the introduction of a more boyish and playful look that continued on for a while.

Those SMiLE era pictures of Brian and his friends all lined up capture this look well.

You know those Zuma Beach photos? Or wherever they were taken, with the Beach Boys in the ocean and on the beach? Dennis in orange pants? Brian with his first, awesome but short-lived beard? Dennis looks like he belongs to another species. His body is toned and muscular. Handsome. Brian looks overweight, out of shape. Sort of like a bear in swimming shorts. And Carl, well, he has tits.

Actually, Dennis may have had a body that would make God's knees tremble but Carl had very dreamy eyes. Or a dreamy expression. Especially when he had the longish hair and beard. Almost Christ-like. But fat Christ, let's not forget.

Brian looks kinda like Seth Rogen in that picture, who could probably play Brian in a movie.

I guess it's just normal. My two brothers look like sh!t while I am beautiful as can be.....

I never understood why people thought that Dennis had a great body. Did you ever see Dennis in shorts? He had chicken legs! And, look at his wrists and arms; they're skinny. Dennis had a flat stomach but no chest. He wasn't that tall either. I must've been missing something. Despite a big nose, he did have a ruggedly handsome face, though. That being said, I'd have traded places with him. And I can't believe I just made this post. :-[

But all The Wilsons were very good looking guys.

That was one of the shame's of Brian letting himself go.

Carl was very good lookin in the 70s, around the Friends era, he had a cool style going on.

And of course, Dennis let himself go, toward the end he looked like sh*t.

I thought Carl was iconic for his vocals on GOK and GV, so I felt his was some sort of symbol for the group too...like the guy you take to meet your parents

I'm with Wild Honey in saying the Wilsons were good looking men. I know most girls dig Dennis and Carl, but I always a Brian girl.

Yes, the Wilsons were the best-looking Beach Boys.  Dennis could have been a movie star.  Brian, particularly in 1963-64, was very handsome in a different way. As Marilyn said, beautiful blue eyes, perfect little nose, cute smile, tall, etc. And they all had amazing hair. I'll add that when Brian lost weight in the 80s, around the time of his first solo album, he looked very good. Okay, so I gather he'd had a facelift, but IMO it was a good facelift. It made him look better rather than making him look like he'd had a facelift. And I'd say that for a 67-year-old, he looks pretty good. You can tell he was handsome as a young guy. Cuter than the Beatles? I'd say so. Sorry, Paul.

Nah, around the time of Brian`s first solo album he looked like a mentally ill man who was being prescribed the wrong medication (because that`s exactly what he was). Nothing attractive about that, facelift or not.

I totally relate to the good looks not reaching everyone in the family. I have 7 brothers and sisters and they are all very good looking. Even all my cousins! Somehow the gene pool wasn't as kind to me. :P

Dennis does have that "look," I don't really know how to describe it. Just a typical could-be movie star look. He's very good-looking, but I've always found Brian and Carl more appealing, though :-X Really.

If they ever make another movie about brian wilson, i hope its a comedy.  I think that would be the most fitting tribute...not that his music doesn deserve to be taken seriously, but i think that in the brian wilson story there is the kind of comedy where you laugh the whole movie and then when its over your go home and cry.  in the hands of the right director...

Seriously, it's all in the eyes of the beholder, dearie, and not just about shirtless poses. Of course Dennis was attractive, but so were his brothers in their own ways. Carl onstage was dynamite to this gal. Those Wilsons had serious charisma!

Dennis may have had the body (and that raspy speaking voice was cool too) but Carl had those eyes.... very peaceful and zen, yet sensual and bedroom-ish.... I also can imagine quite a few girls "friend-zoning" him in their minds until he starts to sing and then...... that voice!!!!!

I also must admit, Bruce was/still is a good lookin dude, himself! He looks like a hybrid of all the Wilsons with a little Mike Love tossed in for good measure!

Speaking of: Mike aint that bad himself. I know quite a few "friend's Moms" who think Mike was the cutest! No joke!

Dennis & Brian are my favorites. They have totally different looks but equally gorgeous [in my eyes]. I never used to think Carl was cute but as I got older, I totally see his appeal. Especially in the late 60s!

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Brian had the adorable smile & ideal height, Denny had the amazing facial structure & body and just that totally adorable rugged/mischevious look, & Carl has such sweet eyes & a cute smile.

Thats my take on the Wilson boys! All gorgeous in their own right.  :love

You know the video where the band is just finished playing in Prague in 1968 or so and Mike comes back on stage for a second doesn't have his shirt on? I was surprised at how traditionally "good-looking" his body was. If Mike kept his shirt off more, he certainly would've gotten more acclaim for his looks.

I think Dennis is actually the least attractive of the Beach Boys (not including 1976-ish Brian), but I can see how people into "manly men" would like him. Carl is one of the only people with a beard I could acknowledge as being good looking. I think the whole band's prime was 20/20 era, except Bruce, who looked too dweeby most of the time. He looks good with long hair like in the video of him playing Disney Girls on the Old Grey Whistle Test.

I think it's hilarious that so many of the guys who have posted in this thread feel the need to say, "Oh, yeah...ahem, I'm straight, but I guess he's good looking. That is, to women and gay guys. Which is not me. Because you know, I'm straight." It's a fun thread. I probably shouldn't say this in light of the John Phillips story, but I remember that interview where even Carnie said she thought her Uncle Dennis was hot. Presumably that was as far as it went-- I think the point was that he was so attractive that men, women, and nieces couldn't help but notice.

The question of who I would do depends on whether it would be a case of doing or being done.

To do : Carl (love the ass and tits), Al (already love petite girls, Al's the next best thing!)

To be done by : Dennis, Mike (hopefully he chants his mantra during his climax)

To make sweet love to : Brian, while Pet Sounds is playing, and I'd pretend that I'm Marilyn (although I have a chin).

And I would take voyeuristic pictures of Bruce changing his clothes and sell them on eBay for profit.

Crazy darn thread! I think Brian and Dennis were the most interesting to look at through the years. Partly because their sharp declines can make you forget how normal and cool they were.

I think Brian looked really good up to Pet Sounds, when his weight was down a little from 1967-71 he could still look handsome. After that he always looked a little off, in the eyes especally, but I suppose he looked pretty decent in 1977.

Carl I think looked really good in the Smile era and then again around KTSA

Dennis looked cool through 74-75. !976 was ok

Al  Surfs Up-Holland era

Mike actually looked good in 1966-67

Bruce I guess around 69-71

Dennis from the late 60s- maybe 1975, easily. Dana said she'd have wanted to hookup with him , and who am I to argue with my wife? :lol

Brian kinda had the whole Seth Rogen thing about him.

I don't know if this is a "straight" thing to say, but the attractive things I find in men are their feminine qualities. Dennis is a very manly-looking man, so I don't find him attractive at all. Carl looked feminine even with a beard, so to me he's the most attractive of the group.

Bruce is the only one I could say I found unattractive, at least from the early 80s on.

Bruce Johnston still looked mighty cool at Knebworth. His '67/'71 moustache wasn't bad either. Made him look real tough.

I've always wondered why Dennis has such a short haircut in those Zuma beach photos. This is, after all, 1967, and Dennis had been wearing the pop star/fashionable longer hair style for a couple of years already. Was it just a yearly cropping or did something happen to him that required him to get it cut so short?  :afro

Wasn't it around that time that Carl was drafted? Maybe something similar happened to Dennis or he anticipated it and got his hair cut.

Dennis deliberatly acted unstable when interviewed for the draft so that couldn't be it. He got it cut real short at the end of 1971 and 74  too.

To me, the Wilsons are just interesting to look at, if you catch my drift. If i see an photo of the band for the first time, it's Carl, Dennis and Brian that my eyes are drawn too. All three of them just had/have a real magnetic quality (the mind-boggling talent probably helps). Bruce however - is he good looking, with those weird droopy-at-the-side eyes? He looks like a partially melted Wilson waxwork.

Dennis looked like Audree and his brothers looked like Murry.

Youch. Never found Brian or Carl to be unattractive sans Brian's "300-some pounds and hasn't shaved, bathed, or gotten out of bed in 9 month" period, but those photos don't so much as evoke disgust but "Gosh Darn, this is sad." Carl only got weird looking with the strange spikey mullet thing he started rockin' at some point in the 80s, but we can forgive him.

Also, I will again say that Bruce looks like a real life Glen Quagmire (Family Guy) to me. It makes me giggle.

I think Dennis was the best looking in the 60's early 70's. But in the early 80's there is a picture of Carl from the 'Carl Wilson' album cover sessions where he looks great!

Carl looked ridiculously good looking in '67 after he had lost a bit more weight. It's remarkable how quickly his sex appeal improved from '66 to '67. It seemed pretty sudden that Carl was no longer the chubby, dorky looking guy, but a thoroughly attractive male, capable of finding the inner homosexual in even the straightest men. Just look at his smouldering eyes!!!

To be honest, as a collective whole, I don't think the band looked better than they did in '67.

I love their style in the ate sixties too, after the dork phase and before the dirty stinking hippy phase. Such cool clothes.

On serious note tho, I think everyone in the band is pretty good-looking. They're people and like people they have their own periods of cuteness, average look and ugliness. For instance, old Bruce is better looking than young. The same about Al, i never ever thought that he's utterly handsome in his twenties. But now he achieved charm on his face. Pure gentleman. Dennis was good in 70s, in my opinion while big brother Brian in 80s. Carl's best era is mid-eighties, superslimmest of all his eras, I'd say. Now Mike... One word - hippie. :hat

Collectively during the SMiLE sessions, they all looked good and quite fashionable. Definitely their peak of cool.

Brian looks better with slightly messy hair rather than the mop top and a 5 o'clock shadow.

This is a great shot of Brian, he looks relaxed,  the most handsome I've seen of him actually...

There are a couple of photos I've seen online and in books of Murry in his early 20s. In those days he was rail thin and almost a dead ringer for '63 era Brian, right down to the slightly lopsided smile.

Carl has such a soft mouth, and is probably a great cuddler.

Brian: such a bear.  He and Foskett should grow matching handlebar mustaches and wear Daryl Dragon hats.

Dennis and Ricky could be my pool boys.  Smells like hot chlorine in here!

I'm ready to defend Foskett on a number of issues, within reason. But if he grew a handlebar or a Fu Manchu all bets would be off. Now Bruce's 'stache was all right in its day but dunno if it'd work now. As for the other four....they can grow beards the size of Zz Top's and that's fine with me.....the closer to 1972 era BBs wildness the better.

Look at Mike's eyes in that tent photo.  Something besides TM happening here.

As for Brian changing from the comb back he had at first to that combed down swept over look, that haircut was called a LONG Princeton.  Very popular and acceptable to parents and teachers as a conservative version of the British moptop that had come into fashion.  You might also remember the short Princeton which was basically a crew cut with bangs just in the front.

Brians first publicity pics with the Princeton haircut put him ahead of the fashion game in comparison to those who were still wearing some facsimilie of the Elvis look in 1964-65.
