Wow, that's a pretty amazing story.  At the end of the day, it's great that we have those reels now for future releases.  Hopefully others will come forward with the remaining missing reels...I can only imagine how much cool stuff is on them that we have yet to hear.

So the moral of the story, as I understand it, is:

Make sure that if you happen to come into possesion of tapes that you don't actually have the rights to own, make sure they change hands often enough for the paper trail to be murky.

Once you have them safely in your possesion hang on to them for a few years until your fairly sure the band and record company would really like to get their hands on them.

Once you notfiy the band/label you have them, insist on renumeration for the "services" you rendered in keeping the tapes for posterity.

Darn it, there was me with recordings my Dad made off air of the ABC Apollo 11 radio broadcasts in Australia and I gave them back to their rightful owner without the relevant charges I should have insisted on, given that the main master tapes are no where near as complete as my father's recordings.

Then the record company can put out 2 or 3 on a compilation of stuff most people have in one form or other several dozen times...

While I was listening to the album today, I wondered if there actually was a completely in studio recorded rundown of their show of which parts seem to have been used in "Cassius Love vs. Sonny Wilson". Maybe it's on one of the tapes?

Codependence Beach? ouch.

Wow I cant even imagine being a 13year old kid in possession of Beach Boys tapes!

That story is really something else...I hope whoever has the remaining tapes will give them back too.

And I guess the brother John's "friend" is likely still in possession of (or knows whom they might have been passed to) the other six missing reels?  I would hope John, if he's still liviing, would  have been asked about the other tapes.

I wonder what the 4 other songs are.

That info was shared when this story broke back in the spring...probably in an old thread here somewhere, and I think in the current ESQ...but for those who didn't catch that info the first time around, the tracks on the three reels were Don't Worry Baby, Why Do Fools Fall in Love, Pom Pom Play Girl, In The Parking Lot, This Car of Mine and Denny's Drums. Interestingly there was guitar and bass on the initial takes of Denny's Drums...making it slightly more of a "song" than the released version. All of these tracks were recorded at Western and feature the BB's on the instruments except WDFFIL which is Goldstar and pure Wrecking Crew.

Damn, the Beach Boys could have had the track that inspired "Toad" and "Moby Dick".  :lol

Interesing. A while back someone who I trust told me that it wasn't Dennis on "Denny's drums".....

"Moby Dick" is a Led Zeppelin song that has a 20 minute drum solo...not sure what "Toad" is.

Absolutely right, Mr. Doe. I'll add that in their original, studio versions, both lasted circa 4-5 minutes, so the reference to Denny's drums isn't so off the wall.

And I believe that the live version is on 'Wheels Of Fire'....

When it comes to THIS sort of stuff, you should only trust Jon Stebbins & me.  And AGD.  And Boyd.  And maybe a couple of others.

No, I did mean In The Parking Lot, but a new stereo mix.  I think it's not a new stereo remix that's on there.

That´s what Jon Stebbins wrote about "Denny´s Drums" on the ShutDownVol.2 board:

"From listening to the raw session IMO its definitely him on most of it, but maybe not all of it. There does seem to be an edit part way through the released version, and there are some tom overdubs. The first few attempts at the unreleased vers. of the song have bass and guitar on it as well. just little one note flourishes in between the drum soloing."

Chances are that was me. The joys of ongoing research dictates that such 'definitive' statements require revision from time to time. I was in error (as was my source, of course...) and it's 'fess up time. Mea culpa.

Toad was a ginger Baker riff on Fresh Cream...with a little Clapton and Brice mixed in.  No vocals.

I really don't remember. Maybe it was you. I only remember that I trusted that person enough to not doubt his infos. But it's always good to learn something new, so what the heck....   :-D
