Granted, there's no way the song would have had a beach/surfing theme had Brian completed it for Pet Sounds, but the melody and arrangement are superb.
Eric is right though, I don't know if it would work with 70-year-olds singing it, even if those 70-year-olds are the remaining Beach Boys. as for the content, true it wouldn't have had a surf theme if it was part of Pet Sounds, but that was '66 not '09. Isn't the melody supposed to be more in the ballpark with "Had To Phone Ya"? In the world of Brian Wilson, taking a portion of a song and using i in a unrelated place is commonplace... the Steinberg Melody fits great... why not use it.
