Title: Hawaii
Post by: LittleSurferGirl on July 29, 2009, 02:19:43 PM
First off, I absolutley ADORE this song.

Secondly, am I the only one who thinks Mike sounds almost identical to Denny? Sorry if this topic has been brought up before, I havent seen it. For the longest time I though Denny sang it.

It's Mike with a head full of snot. He also had a cold cutting Catch a Wave.

For years I thought it was Dennis on Hawaii.  That was close to how he sounded in the early years (Hope that doesn't sound like some kind of put-down!).

Catch a Wave was a little more obvious to me.  I knew it was a stuffy headed Mike from the get-go (Geez I hope that doesn't sound like some kind of....nevermind!)  :lol

Guess he got over the cold around '67 or '68 and caught another one in '74 and hasn't been able to shake it off since!!!

Is it REALLY Mike? I can't believe that! It's a joke, surely? It must be Denny (at least I thought so for only 35 years...).  :o

So did I, to the point of saying so in the first edition of the ComGuide. Then I heard session tapes, and yes, it really is Mike with a head full of snot. Same for "Catch A Wave"... which actually is quite useful, as it tells us that those vocal tracks were recorded with a few days of each other.

It always sounded like Mike to me.

I always went back and forth...parts of it sound like Denny, other parts sound like Mike.  Ultimately, I trust AGD.

I never questioned Catch a Wave being Mike, oddly enough.

Coming up next: 'This Car Of Mine' was sung by James Watt.

This is my daughter's favorite BB song, followed by Trader, Rock & Roll Music, and Isn't it Time.

"Hawaii" always sounded like Mike to me. The weird thing on "Catch A Wave" is that I thought it was Dennis on the first part of the verse, followed by Brian, then Mike. Of course it was Mike-Brian-Mike.

It's just weird to me how Mike sounded like Dennis and himself on the same song.

I always thought it was Mike until I read this thread three years ago and then I thought it did sound a little like Dennis.

Funny how different people hear different things. I always thought "Hawaii" and "Catch A Wave" were clearly Mike singing. I never thought they sounded like Dennis, until last night when I read this thread and listened to them and now I do hear how they sound a bit like Dennis.

Interesting.

All these years digging Hawaii and CAW thinking it's Denny! Is it really really really 100% true? Whoa. Blows my mind. So much music.

Really always had trouble imagining how anyone could think Hawaii and CAW could possibly be Dennis' voice as they nothing like him other than a slight rasp in Mike's usual ultra nasal delivery. Dennis enunciates his words in a completely different way than Mike and they come out of his throat not his nose. I think it was about 1981 when I first read this Hawaii mix-up in vocal credits in Brad Elliot's book (he had CAW right), and then Denny Remembered got them both wrong...I set it straight in The Real Beach Boy book, but apparently there are still people who mis-identify these two songs. Always good to look at the definitive vocal credits thread on this site if you have a question as they are very solidly vetted.

BTW...the 2012 Hawaii is a David Marks lead vocal...would have been a good one for him on the orig. too.

Given that thought, are there originals that have Dave on backing vocals? (I know I should remember this stuff, but I forget)
AND, any original out-takes where Dave did lead vocals?

Mike sang the lead on "Hawaii" the other night in Cincinnati. I was a little disappointed, as I was looking forward to hearing David sing lead on something.
