Title: Marcella and I Just Got My Pay
Post by: Magic Transistor Radio on July 21, 2009, 08:19:32 PM
I hear a strong similarity between these two. Was Brian involved very much in the writing of Marcella? Or I wonder if they used music from a previous song (I Just Got My Pay) and turned it into Marcella and claimed Brian wrote the music. Maybe its just a coincidence?

There's a chain of this melody throughout Beach Boys lore.

First there was All Dressed Up For School, which had a melody recycled for a piece of Heroes and Villains, which was recycled for I Just Got My Pay, which was recycled for Marcella, which was recycled as part of Goin' On.

But different parts are used, so that IIRC "All Dressed Up for School" doesn't share anything with "Marcella."

Begins with the "Honda 55" promo spot !

And yes, there's a sideways step, so no direct line, but each track borrows an element from the preceding one.

The "Five long days, and I'm tired of working" part in I Just Got My Pay was used as the melody for Marcella. I don't hear much of Goin' On in Marcella, I Just Got My Pay, OR All Dressed Up For School. Somebody help me out with that one....

"Goin' On": background to "I love, I miss you, things won't be the same..." et c
"All Dressed Up For School": vocal intro

This is from memory, so apologies if I seriously screw up...

"Hon-da fifty-five !" = "All dressed up for school" (chorus tag).

verse of "ADUFS" = verse of "I Just Got My Pay" = verse of "Marcella" (more or less).

I suppose that it is nothing unusual, considering that you have Surfer Girl, In My Room, The Warmth of the Sun and Girls on the Beach as proggressed from the same idea. Or The Shift and Shut Down; Surfin and Surfin Safari; California Girls and Wouldn't it Be Nice. I am sure there are many more.

I don't have it in front of me, but this was a B.Wilson/J.Reiley song correct? Was Brian very involved in the writing of this song, or did Jack Reiley take a previous Brian melody and add new lyrics?

Jack revised Brian's original lyric, which was about his favorite masseuse.

Girls ont he JBeach and Surfer Girl sound a like, but neither WArmth of the Sun or In my Room sound like the others to me..except for maybe the rhythm.

Has that lyric survived?

In Peter Ames Carlin's book it said Marcella was a Brian/Almer song that got some lyrical revisions from Rieley.

I think In My Room is very similar to Surfer Girl. The Warmth of the Sun, maybe your right.

Does anyone know of or have the original lyrics?
