Title: Can't Wait Too Long...
Post by: Ian on June 16, 2009, 07:15:41 AM
I was looking at an interview I have from July 12 1968 in which the band talked to a reporter backstage in Salina, Kansas.  The interview states that the band is looking forward to the release soon of their single "Can't Wait Too Long"
It looks like they all thought Brian would finish and release that song at the time. Interesting. I think that would have been a great move. Although Mike said "H & V" was the last "Super-dynamism" from Brian, I really think "Can't Wait Too Long" is genius too and could have been a hit

I think it's a little too laid back in its' rhythm and execution to have been a hit - it would have been interesting to see how Brian would have edited the sessions down to a single.

I was struck how the Beach boys in London film used Can't Wait Too Long in the soundtrack, along with other 20/20 songs which were in the works at the time of the filming - goes along with the planned release of the song as a single I suppose, or at least an album track.

I don't see hit potential in that one - unless the original plan was different from the track that eventually emerged.

I don't either, although I still wish they had completed it.  The parts we have are brilliant.

There're certainly a few different versions around -  I love the one that starts with discordant harmonies then goes into a hand-clapping thing before dissolving into sections with which more people are more familiar.  If there ever was an argument that there might be traces of SMILE sessions in this track, I'd pin my money on that intro being good evidence.

It could definetly be a great album track. Hit single? no way. I guess that was one of a lot of tracks that Brian couldn't find the motivation to complete himself after '67. Only this time maybe Carl couldn't either.

There's always the chance it could be finished - BWPCWTL or Brian Wilson Presents Can't Wait Too Long. I think the world is ready for it. :police:

Has anyone ever confirmed WHERE that section comes from?

I've wanted to ask this forever but felt lame making a new thread about it.

It's not on the officially released mix of the song - only on some fan edits/bootlegs.

I asked a similar question a few months ago and was directed towards AGD's website (by AGD of course  :)) and can't remember, frankly, if I could find the answer about those unusual vocals. AGD?

Isn't it kinda hard for us to determine its hit potential, considering the versions we have all heard were compiled years after the sessions?

Nah, people would just b*tch about how much the original was better.

Maybe he just doesn't like it. I can't stand a lot of Mike Love's solo work, but I don't see anyone giving me flack for that.
