Title: Upcoming concerts
Post by: TdHabib on June 15, 2009, 01:05:02 PM
I am seeing Clapton tonight with Steve Winwood, hopefully will be a great show and I will report back.

I am also seeing Dylan in July as well as, and this is a big one, having the honor of seeing MACCA in the new Met Stadium later that month. Will report back on those two.

Saturday on PBS, they showed the Clapton/Winwood Concert DVD; it was very good. During their version of Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Child", Clapton played some licks that I haven't seen from him in a long time.

I'm also going to see Bob Dylan in July (in Allentown, PA), with Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp on the same bill! I assume you're going to the same type of show, in the open ballpark. I saw Dylan and Willie Nelson a few years ago, and Willie's set was as impressive as Dylan's, in its own unique way.

I know this should be in concert reviews--and if an admin wants to move this go ahead!

Clapton and Winwood was very good--but like the Sheriff noted Clapton played "Little Wing" and "Voodoo Child," and when he did he unleashed with a fire he didn't exhibit the rest of the concert-sheer energy. He was good throughout but great, damn good during the Hendrix tunes.

On another note Winwood sounds fantastic--not a bit of age on his voice, he even performed "Georgia on my Mind" solo. Terrific.

I am seeing Dylan/Nelson/Mellencamp, not a big fan of Mellencamp and only a casual fan of Willie but I know it was being a good show.

My 16 year old son and I are going to Hartford Ct. on July 24th to see Green Day.  They are his favorite band, at least for the  moment, and he's been listening to the new album non stop.  I like them also and I keep reminding him, to keep up my hipness quotient such as it is, that I bought Dookie in "94" when he was not quite a year old.

Saw Bob tonight...seriously good show. Willie Nelson performed an upbeat beginning, with almost every song going into the next. He has a strong voice for his age and his band was cookin. John Mellencamp wasn't as good, but even though I'm not really a fan "Scarecrow" was quite a good song.

Dylan performed really well, despite not talking inbetween songs (he didn't the last time I saw him either). The band was really strong as usual, especially Tony Garnier's bass (and standup bass). Really good rendition of "Beyond Here Lies Nothing" began the show. Dylan danced a little on "Highway 61," and played strong keyboard throughout, taking more than one solo. Highlight for me was "Love Sick" and "Make You Feel My Love," to both of which Dylan contributed strong, passionate vocals...despite the fact that you couldn't understand the ocassional verse! "Lay Lady Lay" was the rocking version ala Before the Flood with a more restrained vocal.

Here's the set for Zimmy:

1. Beyond Here Lies Nothin' (Bob on guitar)
2. Lay, Lady, Lay (Bob on guitar)
3. Lonesome Day Blues (Bob on keyboard)
4. Love Sick (Bob on keyboard)
5. The Levee's Gonna Break (Bob on keyboard)
6. Beyond The Horizon (Bob on keyboard and harp)
7. Honest With Me (Bob on keyboard)
8. Make You Feel My Love (Bob on keyboard and harp)
9. Highway 61 Revisited (Bob on keyboard)
10. If You Ever Go To Houston (Bob on keyboard)
11. Summer Days (Bob on keyboard)
12. Like A Rolling Stone (Bob on keyboard)

  (encore)
13. Jolene (Bob on keyboard)
14. All Along The Watchtower (Bob on keyboard)

Thanks for the review, TdHabib. I'm going to see Bob, Willie & John on Tuesday in Allentown, PA. I love Willie Nelson so I know I'll enjoy him. John Mellencamp is playing a lot of hits so I can sit through him. Dylan's the wild card, of course. I'll keep you posted.

Btw, I just have to add that like Brian's audience, Dylan's is SO appreciative of him. During the new "Beyond Here Lies Nothin'" and also "Jolene," there wasn't a person in the place that wasn't doing some sort of dance to the swinging rhythm. Hell, when I saw Elton a few months ago people were getting up, yawning and getting the beer during "Madman Across the Water" and "Roy Rodgers," the two best songs of the evening for me.
