Title: Queen....with Adam Lambert?
Post by: Sheriff John Stone on May 25, 2009, 06:43:53 AM
I never watch American Idol but this recent one caught my attention. So, I fired up YouTube to see/hear what everybody is talking about. Now, I'm reading that Brian May is gonna talk with this guy.

Luther, what'd you think about this? Are Paul Rodgers days numbered? :'(

I've never seen an episode of American Idol, so I can't comment on that guy. But I wish Queen would hang it up. It's not that I don't think the remaining two participants are talented--they are, obviously--but without Freddie's input (and Deacon's songs and playing, for that matter), it's just not anywhere near as interesting. They were like the Beatles for me, in that it was the hopping genres tune after tune, each written in such a different voice due to the different songwriters and singers that really made the band. Cut out one of them, and the best one by far, no less, and add in the fact that they're decades past their real creative primes, and it's just dull.

As for Rodgers, I recall hearing he was already fired. Thank gods.

Luther, you know my feelings about Queen, but still: I can sympathize with every word you write here. Despite my not liking them, they were a perfect unit for people who do/did; including Roy Thomas Baker's work for them. The whole of Queen was much more than the sum of its parts.

My friend's grandmother forced me to watch the American Idol finale so I saw them singing We Are the Champions. There were two guys singing, and I thought to myself, "These guys are doing bad Freddie Mercury impressions, I'm glad Queen has Paul Rodgers, who sounds nothing like Freddie Mercury. They shouldn't try to have someone try to sing just like him. I'm glad they're moving on. They're not the same band they were before '91 and I'm fine with that." Ugh.
