Title: What would be the quintessence or 5th Element of SMiLE? Post by: rasmus skotte on May 22, 2009, 03:10:04 AM I'm about to unleash my own 'research' in a relatively big way soon. But not so much if it is made obsolete by other('s) findings. One way to imagine this miracle could be that out of SMiLE's 4 Elements some kind of alchemic sensation is distilled. I'm eager to know what's happening (if anything) in this field!?

Post by: Loaf on May 22, 2009, 06:23:13 AM I think the 5th Element is the Smile listener. Those who've followed Smile through its various bootlegged incarnations have brought something special to the whole Smile legend, and thus the subsequent hearing of that music, that it wouldn't have had if the album had been released at the time. Wasn't this acknowledged by Van Dyke Parks in the new lyrics to BWPS, the lines about pirates/bootleggers etc...?
But i also like 46 as an answer. 46 chromosomes in the human genome. 42 would be a cliche. Title: Re: What would be the quintessence or 5th Element of SMiLE? Post by: SloopJohnB on May 22, 2009, 08:52:40 AM The fifth element could be the music itself - sound is based on vibrations... "Good vibrations". Which comes right after the elements suite.
Of course that's a very subjective point of view, and I highly doubt VDP & Brian even gave thought to adding a fifth element, but I like to think of it that way. I was going to post God and then saw that you did first! It would have to be God. How many times during this period did Brian use the words 'spiritua'l and 'God'? Isn't that part of what the title is about, that when you SMiLE and laugh, you're at your most spiritual? 'A Teenage Symphony To God'. Post by: PrayForSurf on May 23, 2009, 08:01:38 AM Brian and Carl spoke about praying before they recorded in this time frame (Pet Sounds-SMiLE era) and Brian continues to explore "God" themes or elements, as in Walking Down the Path of Life ... Post by: Bicyclerider on May 24, 2009, 10:49:48 AM If you're talking about the elements as in the elements suite, there are only four - why would there need to be a 5th element or quintessence of Smile that is another "element?" Maybe the question is too abstract for me.
If we're talking about themes and the essence of Smile, I would go for innocence/childhood, experience/corrupting influence of Western civilization, spirituality of the natural world, and the divine nature of laughter, with God/spirituality as the overriding theme.
