Title: Flight of the Conchords Post by: carl r on May 14, 2009, 05:13:12 AM With the 2nd series of the conchords beginning in the UK, I wondered if there were any other fans here.
I don't think they've done a spoof of the BBs yet, not in an outright way. However, I'm quite sure that Dennis and Brian would have liked them, back in the day. Some of the songs could have even been "Love You" outtakes. The deadpan delivery takes a little getting used to, but Jemaine and Brett can get away with any perversity and make it appear innocent. They haven't attempted too many specific parodies (Bowie would be the one real standout on the first season), but I suspect the Beach Boys would be a little too traditional and obvious to spoof on; FOTC work best when skewering 80s synth styles or mainstream R&B/hip-hop conventions.
Having said that, be sure to check out the Simon & Garfunkel tribute episode towards the end of Season II - a real highpoint of the series! I found it rather ironic that FOTC sold-out such a large venue as the Fox Theatre in Detroit, MI (and added a second night) with top ticket prices close to $100.00 (which kept me from attending). As portrayed on the series, the boys are lucky to be playing the local library. Sort of like millionaire Charlie Chaplin playing the lonely tramp, right? |
