Title: Was Brian holding back songs for Pet Sounds when he made Summer Days? Post by: shelter on May 14, 2009, 02:27:57 AM Since there aren't any ballads on Summer Days and because it's arguably not as good an album as its predecessor, it's logical to assume that he was... Is there any evidence that Brian was consciously holding back songs for his next album while he was working on Summer Days? And if so, which ones?

Maybe the other guys wanted more rockers and less lovey stuff. Or maybe BW wanted the same so they did a rock n roll record.

But it seems more likely to me that "Summer Days" and (part of) "Pet Sounds" were originally one batch of songs -or at least ideas for songs- that was eventually divided into two categories (happy vs. melancholic/ballad-ish), than that Brian changed the mood of the songs he was writing so drastically between two albums... Maybe he just got all the happy songs that he had out of the way so he could start working on what eventually became "Pet Sounds"... Nothing on "Summer Days" really would've fitted on "Pet Sounds" or vice versa - while Brian was already heading in the direction of "Pet Sounds" on "Today"...

(to get more time for Pet Sounds) was unusally long for that period, I don't think Brian already had the songs during the Summer Days sessions. Perhaps some ideas, but nothing to left off Summer Days. Except maybe "Sloop John B" + "I'm Waiting For The Day" (already copyrighted in early 1964) of course.

Take all your upbeat songs and put it on one side of the album, then take all the ballads and put it on the other side. In this case, the same thing was just spread out over two albums- Summer Days and Pet Sounds.

When Brian called on Tony Asher, he explained that Capitol were on his ass for a new album, and he only had two songs, "Sloop John B" and "In My Childhood" (I guess he forgot about "Trombone Dixie" and "DT(PYHOMS)"), so I'm guessing the stuff he wrote with Tony was all new melodies, not stockpiled. Some chord changes and structures in his pocket? It's possible. But how would we know that wasn't how he always worked from album to album, between '62 and '66?

It's a shame Tony Asher didn't get a chance to work on lyrics for Sandy - the song is incredible, and would have gone nicely on PS. With the right lyrics of course. Just like "Gee", "You Are My Sunshine", "Old Master Painter" and "I Wanna Be Around" didn't sound like "Smile" tracks until Brian arranged them to be "Smile" tracks. Post by: punkinhead on May 18, 2009, 09:37:43 AM From what I heard, it was Mike and Capitol who wanted a more commercial album...but to me, that 2nd side really previewed what was to come in the BB world. Califronia Girls, a great commercial production that sounds so symphonic, it's hard not to think of him conducting his future tunes like this (PS, GV, smile)...Let Him Run Wild (his tribute to Bacharach I believe?), great pop production and lyrics of being on the other side of a relationship. You're So Good to me is a personal favorite of mine...but the lyrics, vocals, simplicity yet complex track always made me think of an early Pet Sounds tune. Summer Means New Love, a great instrumental and preview of things to come on Let's go away for a While...I always thought this tune and After the game woulda been great together. I'm Bugged at my Old Man is obviously his early mindset of humor in music. And And Your Dreams Come True, just a great accapella ballad. Wouldn't it be something if Guess I'm Dumb was held for this album, with a BB/BW vocal.
