Title: The new Star Trek-movie
Post by: Rocker on May 08, 2009, 03:13:12 PM
I just saw it. Liked it. It's well done, etc. Of course it doesn't come close to the classics
I was surprised to see Bruce Greenwood, who played Dennis in "Summer dreams"

I wasn't very impressed with him but the young Kirk was really good imo.

I was not convinced. The end struck me as particularly cheesy and though I sure can take a bit of Uhura undressing they were definitely trying a tad bit too hard to make it all seem so young, hip, and sexy. In fact I couldn't help being reminded of High School Musical on several occasions.  ;)

I loved it!  It's a great re-boot that includes the past of ST, unlike the reboots of Batman, James Bond, Incredible Hulk, etc.

I thought everyone was well casted, Simon Pegg was a fantastic Scotty! and that guy playing Bones was right on the dot.

It's a prequel Jim, but not as we know it.

Captain’s log… Earth Date 5/12/09

Last night I viewed the new Star Trek movie. First off, while watching the preview to an upcoming movie the film melted! They got it going in about 5 minutes. Luckily, it was only on the previews.
The ship designs are NOT right for when they should have been. They seemed to have focused the effects and designs of everything from the Star Trek movies NOT the original TV series. MAJOR oversight. Too much effort/ money spent on special effects. Some small parts of scenes could have even been eliminated. Too many times I found myself having a tough time focusing due to so much stuff flying around every which way in the scenes.
The scene with young Kirk driving is incorrect due to the fact made apparent in the epidode “A Piece Of The Action”. Where Kirk and Spock are sitting in an old car and Kirk tells Spock he doesn’t know how to drive. The movie DID have the Kobiashi Maru scene where Kirk hacked the test. I was pleased about that. JJ Abrams was clever in the way the movie explains why things are a bit not right. Using this context, he could get away with anything. And still not taint the original series. However, this also gives an inaccurrate picture of how the crew met due to the exact same reason. I almost got up and walked out right after they made it clear of why things are not quite right. But stayed to watch the rest.
Spock plays a pivotal role here.  Both young and old Spock. Though it ends with 2 Spocks in the same timeline. I am not sure how they plan to correct that. They never explain where old Spock is leaving to.
Needless to say, I am not really a big fan of this one. Since it isn’t really the same timeline. Therefore not the same Star Trek.

NEEERRRRRRRDDDD!!!!! :lol :lol :lol

But seriously, I was listening to a show on NPR last week about the new Star Trak movie, and a caller was talking about how it doesn't follow the established Star Trek canon, and as a result of that, may infuriate hardcore Trekkies. I'm no hardcore Trekkie, though, and I really want to see the movie...just for the fact that Simon Pegg is in it (I looove Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz!).

The movie is great!  It's funny, interesting, special effects are great, and Chris Pine, who plays Kirk, did a fantastic job.  He has William-Shatner-as-Kirk's mannerisms down perfectly.

But... he... doesn't... speak... like... each... word... is... a ... sentence... like Kirk. LOL

;D  Yeah, I don't think we'll be hearing Chris Pine doing Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds like Shatner did.

By the way, I believe that the Star Trek TV show was a favorite of Dennis Wilson's.

It was. If I remember correctly he said so in a 1975 interview.

And easily I am sure Denny's favorite was Captain Kirk. Ballsy just like Dennis.
