Title: Pleasure Island - Is it going to be?
Post by: Rocker on March 20, 2009, 05:16:56 PM
I just stumbled upon this picture and if you make it bigger, you can see that on the sheeds a concept for a work is written. Above it all stands "Pleasure island", and we know that Brian named that title from time to time. Some narratives as well as "Rave on" "Proud Mary" "Palisades parks" and "At the hop" are mentioned. "Brian, can I put this on your piano for a second? Never mind why. I'll give you a cheeseburger and some coke!"

Looking at the close up of the sheet, anyone else notice something that hasn't changed from the '60s?   I'm talking about Brian's idiosyncratic mixture of upper and lower case letters (i.e., NARRATiVE).  I always thought that the "i" in SMiLE was just a quirky thing cooked up by the Capitol art department, but perhaps they were following Brian's lead on that one.

Sounds like Al Jardine was involved.

I thought The Beach Boys recorded a demo of "At The Hop" in the past for some album, with, I believe, Michael E. Love on lead vocals. ???

Could be. My Al assumption was based on his predilection for awful and altogether unnecessary cover versions. But hey, that really applies to all the guys, doesn't it...

You don't know yet if Brian's version really is awful....  ;)
I guess "Rave on" is the Buddy Holly-tune? So already three cover songs. I wonder, if this project even happens, if he will do more covers or write the other songs himself...

It's fun!

Brian was obviously just sketching out some ideas -- "let's see, how can I make a concept album without writing new songs?"

I wonder what other treasures we would find if we could see photos of BW in much higher resolution ...

Pleasure Island - Is it going to be?

After Brian's solo history of the tortured artist who, walks the line, lays down his burden, dances the night away, and welcomes a brand new day has gotten a little old, for me anyway, I welcome something that might be based more on fun than recovery.

This Pleasure Island appears to be right up Brian's alley. While I'm not encouraging a bunch of covers, or trying to emulate his old stuff - Brian's been there, done that - I've always enjoyed that hedonistic side of Brian. "Amusement Parks U.S.A.", "Roller Skating Child", "The Boogie's Back In Town", "It's Trying To Say (Baseball)", and "Someone To Love" is some wild, weird stuff. I miss that crazy (in a good way) side of Brian. Is it still there? Maybe he could call up Grandpa Mike and Uncle Al and start chasing girls around again! >:D

At the Hop....Danny and the Juniors hit a groove, stuck as sharp as a knife with that one, IIRC.

Brian thought it was an important record back when, maybe he still does.

If Brian could make a collection of covers produced as well as Pet Sounds and Smile, and the Pleasure Island Theme rocked, then he'd be onto something. But if it's like his cover of "I'm Into Something Good", than it would interesting for a couple of listens but extremely nonessential.

It's a new, recent, recording - very quirky, very BW, Scott on lead, Tommy Morgan on harp. It made me smile.

New recording of "Proud Mary", too, not the Was version. Again, very BW. In a good way.  ;D

Maybe he should forget 'Pleasure Island' and just do a rock & roll album.

So these are new recordings? So Brian really is working on something new, then?

Interesting...

"PM" was something he worked on with Scott.

Beach Boys recorded At the Hop for BB85. It sounds like...Beach Boys 85.

Well, if its true, Im stoked. I hope he records a new album soon. I will be disappointed if its just a bunch of covers, but one or two doesnt bother me.

what we're looking at may not be litterally be a "tracklist" it could be nearly anything to outline ideas. We have no way of knowing...just a thought.

It seems like Scott has gotten a lot out of Brian than one would expect.

Looks to me like "Pleasure Island Theme" stands above it all, as if  the theme was the first track or movement... "P I Theme" is repeated further down.

I read:

Pleasure Island Theme
Narrative
Proud Mary
Narrative 3 (rest of line illegible)
(Line scored out - illegilble)
(Line scored out - illegilble)
Rave On
Palisades Park Every B... (rest of line illegible) (note above appears to read "Off My [something])
(Line scored out -  illegible)
P I Theme (rest of line illegible -  but might read "[something] Path of Life")
Narrative (rest of line illegible -  but might read "Having" or "Heavy" [something])
At The Hop

I don't know what to think of this. Based on the song selection it seems like he might as well call it "15 More Big Ones"...

Yep...the 1985 self-titled album.  Got a recording of it somewhere.

Basically except for Getcha Back I think the whole 1985 project sucked. Male Ego is so so. Carl's stuff is well sung but I hate the mor 80's  sound of those tracks.

i think 'where i belong' and 'i do love you' were the strongest tracks on that album...i wish they werent overlooked, i think they're underrated.
