Title: Here Today: Bach Influence Post by: Sam_BFC on February 04, 2009, 12:58:55 PM I have another question for anyone who could indulge me in this kinda thing (thanks for the reply yesterday Luther).
I have seen Brian mention that Here Today carried a Bach influence (in the PS podcast series for instance) and I was just wondering how so? Cheers Title: Re: Here Today: Bach Influence Post by: variable2 on February 04, 2009, 01:34:18 PM Well, influence can mean a lot of different things to an artist.. from giving them a feeling that makes them want to write a song, to more specific or conscious influence on melody or harmony. I can't really go into too much detail right now, but what I hear on Here Today is that the way the chords move seems like it could have been inspired by Bach.. chords turning into secondary dominants, and thus leading to new keys. It's also interesting to think that the concept of harmony as we know it today did not exist when Bach was writing things like the Well Tempered Clavier. Harmony was incidental and only came from different melodies lining up vertically as they weave in and out of each other. Hope this helps.
