Title: More fun with comps: Pre-Pet Sounds Post by: Jeff on January 29, 2009, 05:51:51 PM I never did like surf & car songs very much, and hate to see the BB comps filled with them, though I know it’s inevitable. In any case, a 1963-65 comp that mostly (though not totally) stays away from the summer fun stuff, and instead focuses on Spector-like production, sounds pretty good to my ears.
This is roughly chronological, from the BW self-defining In My Room in July ’63 to Trombone Dixie (which ends with BW saying something like, “OK, thanks, that’s it”) in Nov. ‘65. Salt Lake City (great track, atrocious lyrics) is an instrumental here, as is Guess I’m Dumb. Help Me Rhonda has the psych-like BW vocals from Endless Harmony. So how about it? What if anything should be added? What if anything should go? 1 In My Room 2 I Do 3 Fun Fun Fun 4 The Warmth Of The Sun 5 Why Do Fools Fall In Love 6 Don't Worry Baby 7 Hushabye 8 I Get Around 9 Girls On The Beach 10 When I Grow Up (To Be A Man) 11 Guess I'm Dumb (no vocals) 12 Please Let Me Wonder 13 I'm So Young 14 Kiss Me Baby 15 She Knows Me Too Well 16 In The Back Of My Mind 17 Do You Wanna Dance 18 Salt Lake City (no vocals) 19 Help Me, Rhonda (Endless Harmony) 20 Girl Don't Tell Me 21 Then I Kissed Her 22 Summer Means New Love 23 Let Him Run Wild 24 California Girls 25 You're So Good To Me 26 The Little Girl I Once Knew 27 Trombone Dixie Title: Re: More fun with comps: Pre-Pet Sounds Post by: Sheriff John Stone on January 29, 2009, 06:04:01 PM What about "There's No Other Like My Baby" from Party? That's pretty Spectorian. Surprised you included "Fun Fun Fun" on the comp. Isn't that the type of song you were trying to stay away from....
Title: Re: More fun with comps: Pre-Pet Sounds Post by: Jeff on January 29, 2009, 06:18:24 PM For me it's a balancing act. The production of Fun, Fun, Fun is top-notch. The lyrics aren't the best, but they're not bad either--comparable to the Beatles of the same period.

The vocals are by Glen Campbell, which makes it not a Beach Boys song. Just think of it like a Beach Boys' song with a lead vocal by somebody like Bruce, Blondie, or Jack Reiley! From what I've read, Brian recorded it for the BB's use, didn't use it right away, then gave it to Campbell in thanks for his service to the band. Isn't that sort of the beginning of Brian getting into the Pet Sounds era?
