Should point out here that some of these gigs were for one-off all-star shows as opposed to tours.

I have posted this before elsewhere...but I thought it might be fun to list some of the many acts that have played with the BBs. Just looking at their first three years....I have included the date they first played with them.   Dick Dale (1961) The Surfaris (1961), The Challengers (1961) Ike and Tina Turner (1961),

I know The Surfaris are mentioned in one of the biographies, (Gaines?) as appearing on the bill with DD and The Challengers, but I notice AGD's site has this December '61 show down as:

23 - Rendevous Ballroom, Newport Beach, CA
[interval of a Dick Dale/Challengers/Safaris show]

I remember reading some interviews with some Surfaris (Wipe Out) members, where it is mentioned that they took their name from a popular vocal group of the time called The Safaris, changing the spelling slightly to adopt a surfing connotation.

Question here is, was it The Surfaris or The Safaris at that December '61 show?

Also I would like to add that I suspect (I'm not at home to consult with the books, but according to this:

http://thesurfaris.com/Home.html ),

that The (Wipeout) Surfaris were not formed until late '62... So if it was The Surfaris it probably was not them...

Therefore to my knowledge that would leave only The (Bombora) Surfaris, (later to be known as The Original Surfaris, as a way to distinguish themselves from the nationally known Wipe Out hit makers...) who I believe were formed earlier. (1960?) (I can search for more precise details when I am at home if anyone is interested.)

So I suppose the question should be, is it known if this was The (Original) Surfaris or a popular vocal group of the time called The Safaris?

[Of course The (Wipe Out) Surfaris were a part (headliners?) on the Australian Surf Side Tour along with The BBoys a couple of years later...]

You are correct-The Surfaris did not play with them in 1961...They were on the Australian tour in 1964 but the headliner was Roy Orbison.   As far as that 61 show goes...there are no existing ads or mentions of that show in any papers...so who else was there is based solely on memories.   Badman lists The Surfaris at thst show based on Gaines I guess-who probably based it on an interview with Dorinda Morgan.

For me it's also interesting that The Challengers were there at that December '61 gig...

The Challengers were formed, I believe, following the break up of The Belairs AFTER perhaps their best known record "Mr Moto' (spring '61) had hit...

Eddie Bertrand formed Eddie & The Showmen
Richard Delvy formed The Challengers

On Paul Johnson's webpage, there are pictures of The Belairs from 1962 http://www.pjmoto.com/history.html showing both Bertrand and Delvy (drums) still in the line up...

Indeed The BBoys played with The Belairs in 1962, so obviously they hadn't broken up. (Maybe replaced the departing members?)

I'd be curious to know if it is confirmed beyond doubt that The Challengers were on that December '61 bill, as the time scale for them to actually be in existance (from memory) appears to be very tight...

Unless, of course it is a different group?!

I believe they played with Creedence Clearwater Revival in San Francisco '69 and toured with Jerry Lee lewis in '93 (unfortunately without Carl)

Once again....There are no ads or newspaper mentions of any BB shows in 1961...The earliest concert ad (that survives) is the one printed up by the Presbyterian Church for their Jan 25 1962 app.   The Gaines book Heroes and Villains is the source for the Challengers and Surfaris being on the bill with the BBs and Dick Dale on Nov 23. Badman copied that from Gaines and we list it at Bellagio based on them.  I scoured Long Beach, LA and other CA papers and have yet to find even a mention of their first two shows.  The Gaines reference to that show occurs in a paragraph with interview material with Dorinda Morgan.  She is the only person to describe this appearance.  As far as I can recall, most of the BBs themselves have forgotten they appeared there-Mike pretty much always refers to the Long Beach show on New Years Eve as the first show.   Thus....it isn't possible to 100% confirm who was there...though one could talk to the band members....Honestly-I think that The Challengers and Surfaris probably weren't there.  Unfortunately-many of these bands have been interviewed (Dalley-Surfin Guitars) and while their memories for fun stories are strong, their memory for exact dates (like most people) is weak.

Oh-I only listed bands thru 1965. Creedence appeared with the BBs at the Filmore East in Oct 1968.  This is the app that Bruce often refers to as "the time when we couldn't even get 200 people to come see us in NY".  There were actually 2 shows that night and according to the NY Times Concert review-turn out for at least one of the shows was better than Bruce recalls

I can only recall a couple of times seeing them with a warm up act.  Three Dog Night and The Miami Sound Machine with Gloria Estefan.  Both were great shows, a full night of entertainment.  I saw them once with a stand up comic as warm up act.  Can't recall the name.  Must have been close to 30 years ago.  The guy did a routine with a police megaphone, using it at the fastfood drive through etc.

A buddy of mine is still talking about the concert he saw (in 1976?) when Heart opened up for The Beach Boys. For the first BB show I ever saw, in 1978, Randy Bachman's short-lived group, Ironhorse, opened. They were great, and they played a couple of BTO hits. Who ran the Ironhorse....

I saw them twice in the early 1990's. One show with America as the opening act, and the other with, unfortunatly, David Cassady.

I saw them re-team with Chicago in 1989, the Beach Boys started the show. I got sick duringt Chicago's set so I missed the encore. I didn't even know they would jam together because I was only 13 and had barely heard of the 1975 tour. I would have stayed had I known.

On the box set tour I saw America with them. They were ok and I remember they seemed to enjoy playing  their music even if I never was into them really.

Saw them at SPAC in Saratoga, NY with the Allman Brothers Band.   I saw them again at the Starlite Theater in Latham, NY but if there was another act on the bill, I don't remember it.  There probably was, the Starlite generally had an opening act, even if it was a local band.

When I've seen the band in the past few years, their opening act is usually a Jimmy Buffet tribute band.

Oh for sure Heart 1976. About  55,000 people in the stands at Arrowhead Stadium here. A hot Summer day. I still have the pulsating, flashing heart we all got backstage. Sat on a In Concert white tour equipment box and got sunburned.

I'm looking right now at a poster hanging up on my wall for a Beach Boys concert at the Omni in Atlanta, GA. It's dated April 11, 1973. Supporting acts were Mother's Finest and "Columbia Recording Artist Bruce Springstin [sic]." It was a great show, needless to say.

Did I miss Billy Joel being listed? I saw him get booed off the stage in Saint Louis in 1973 or 1974. He tried to go on but gave up to chants of Beach Boys, Beach Boys! Who knew?
