Title: Duophonic Pet Sounds created from orig. L.A. Mono Mix? Missing Artifacts...
Post by: CMP on January 24, 2009, 12:20:36 AM
Back in the 70's I used to listen to Pet Sounds only on headphones - the Duophonic one - The Japanese pressing being the best- I have all the copies on CD, PS Box set, the felt cover edition etc... I have noticed that there are little details missing here and there (i.e. I used to get a kick out of Brian yelling "STOP THE TAPE!!" in WIBN as the tempo is slowing down, after the bridge). This example apperars in NO mono CD of PS that I have heard. If the Duophonic version was created using the original mono mix then this would explain why the mono mixes on the CD's have never rang 'true' to my ears.  (Did the original L.A. master have this WIBN artifact prior to it being 'damaged at Warner's??)

The NY tape is a direct copy of the original LA tape, so the NY tape WIBN should have every artifact that the undamaged LA tape WIBN had.

You guys DO know that the Japanese Toshiba-EMI label re-issued PS in 2006 in the mono/stereo configuration AND a single disc duophonic mix, using the 1966 duophonic master. It was availble for like a second, but it was there!

How did the duophonic cd sound compared to the duophonic LP?

Yeah, does the sound of the duophonic CD blow away the Linnett stereo and Hoffman mono versions?

oh hell, I didn't by it. I have enough duophonic vinyl copies to last me a lifetime.

Especially would like to hear it doubled in Duophonic.

this was the best duophonic original release of Pet Sounds album:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/The-Beach-Boys-Pet-Sounds-4-Track-Reel-To-Reel-ZT-2458-rare/302609521714?hash=item4674eedc32:g:pQ8AAOSwmblZw~5c

the tape playing speed of this edition is 7-1/2 IPS, but later Capitol got cheap and re-issued it at the slower and inferior 3-3/4 IPS (which no longer qualifies as the best)

Capitol released a few other Beach Boys reel tapes then but not one other at 7-1/2 (just this P.S.)

The 4-track Reprise consumer reel for So Tough/Pet Sounds sounds better at 3.75 ips than the Capitol duophonic at 7.5 in my opinion. I am not aware of a 3.75 Capitol Pet Sounds release.

one might argue that a 3.75 ips true stereo recording tape is better than any 7.5 ips duophonic tape.  the point was of course that particular reel tape is the best possible old duophonic source

ZT 2458 is the capitol number for Pet Sounds reel tape @ 7.5 ips speed;  they later down-graded the speed on Pet Sounds to 3.75 ips and re-assigned number Y1T 2458.  the beatles revolver album on reel tape got speed down-graded by capitol from 7.5 to 3.75 in just the same fashion back then

Are all Capitol US reel to reel tapes of Pet Sounds in duophonic, or did they release a mono issue as well?
