Title: Status of ED ROACH's book ??? Post by: Lady on January 22, 2009, 10:06:55 PM Does anyone know when Ed Roach's book is coming out?
This is the book I'm really waiting for! Every time I stumble upon something he's written, I find what he has to say interesting. He seems like a genuinely nice guy, completely "unaffected." The pictures alone will be worth the wait! Title: Re: Status of ED ROACH's book ??? Post by: Howie Edelson on January 24, 2009, 02:16:32 PM Ed's personal take on the BB's saga is genius. Imagine one of us in the middle of all that? I've been leaning on him hard to start exhibiting his shots globally and getting a coffee table sized book (ala the high-end Genesis Publications tomes out there) released to the masses. His shots mixed with the backstory... It's a no-brainer. I can't think of anyone who wouldn't buy nine. Let's hope it all comes together this year.

Title: Re: Status of ED ROACH's book ??? Post by: Ed Roach on January 25, 2009, 06:14:36 PM Well, this is most interesting; I visit here almost daily, and haven't ever been able to post. I haven't tried in ages, so that I had one board I could just visit, without trying to sound like an 'authority'; I know I've been guilty of that on other boards... However, I finally managed to retrieve my password, to comment on this thread.
I'm a lifelong fan, first and foremost, and am still reduced to tears by so much of their music, and I'm constantly blown away by things I learn around here. I started out loving the music from the first time I heard 409, (don't know how much airplay Surfin' got back east, but I managed to catch the ride of those first Capitol singles), and I equated those 'B' sides as a way out of Brooklyn. It was a bizarre coincidence of time & the cosmos of the sixties that Dennis happened to directly lead me out west. It's even more incredible the effect he & his music continue to have on me, and on many of you. Guess I better get off my duff, finish my story, and share more of my memories & 'stuff' with you: (http://home.earthlink.net/~aroach68/images/bstudio1a.jpg) (http://home.earthlink.net/~aroach68/images/carlplane.jpg)(http://home.earthlink.net/~aroach68/images/densing73copy.jpg) Title: Re: Status of ED ROACH's book ??? Post by: the captain on January 25, 2009, 06:32:10 PM The Brian and Mike at the mic picture is awesome, from Brian's open shirt to the cowboy hat on the mic stand. Fantastic! And I'm really glad to see you posting here: I hope you'll chime in often.
Title: Re: Status of ED ROACH's book ??? Post by: Lady on January 25, 2009, 09:15:35 PM What a great surprise!
Really enjoyed your post and pictures -- I’ll start clearing a place on my coffee table for your book! :-D Title: Re: Status of ED ROACH's book ??? Post by: smile-holland on January 26, 2009, 12:31:47 AM welcome mr. Roach. Glad to see you here.
Title: Re: Status of ED ROACH's book ??? Post by: Loaf on January 26, 2009, 03:23:00 AM Eddie, you can put me down for a copy of your book if that is any incentive to get it finished.
Title: Re: Status of ED ROACH's book ??? Post by: Ed Roach on January 31, 2009, 06:53:14 PM Now that I'm finally posting here, I noticed on the 'Media' page that there was some discussion of a photo I took of Dennis streaking: (http://www.danaddington.com/denny/dennystreak.jpg)
Your 'global moderator' asked me to tell the story, and this brought back a lot of my fears about releasing my book; you guys sometimes know the exact facts & dates more than I do! If you've seen any of my interviews, or heard me on the radio, you know that I shoot from the hip, and have an excellent memory of the events that I lived through. However, it's the way I remember things, and my vision was sometimes clouded. I remember things the way I lived them, and others aren't going to remember things in the same way. (Wait until you read my version of Dennis' meeting with Ronald Reagan's daughter, compared to her version as she told it in her book! Also, Stebbins took notice of the obvious irony that exists in all of our memories; check out page 173 in "The Real Beach Boy", to see the difference in how Karen & I remembered things). So I'll tell 'SMiLE-Holland' that I'm going to tell the streaking story here, and I'll try & get it up here before kickoff time tomorrow, o.k.? Title: Re: Status of ED ROACH's book ??? Post by: Jonas on January 31, 2009, 08:28:10 PM Can't wait! :3d

No sweat, Ed, you write your stuff, we'll fix the dates and chronology (for a small consideration, of course ;D) and then... well, world peace, anyone ? Title: Re: Status of ED ROACH's book ??? That certainly wasn't my intention. Just very anxious. Thanks for hanging around here! Title: Re: Status of ED ROACH's book ??? Post by: Magic Transistor Radio on February 01, 2009, 01:49:20 PM I don't know much about you except from what I read in the Dennis books. I would definately read your book!
Title: Re: Status of ED ROACH's book ??? Post by: Ed Roach on February 01, 2009, 02:45:42 PM Sorry that I didn't get a chance to tell this story before the Super Bowl, but I do appreciate your interest.
I did get a chance to respond on the Media page, about a photo that was posted there of Brian. And I'm about to put 2 more pic's up there; I'll get around to this story sometime soon - hopefully, when I can pull the other related photos. Title: Re: Status of ED ROACH's book ??? LOL I LOVE the pic haha! Denny was quite a character, and I can't wait until you finish the book, Ed...there is ALOT of interest, believe me, I will be one of the first to buy my copy......oh, are you selling any Denny calendars like you had a couple of years ago? I really enjoyed my calender. Thanks so much for the pics and sharing your stories! Carly Title: Re: Status of ED ROACH's book ??? Post by: Ian on February 02, 2009, 09:52:56 AM Ed-if you recall, Rolling Stone printed that picture in a 1974 issue and said it was taken at a recent Vancouver show-so using the list AGD and I compiled at Bellagio-the pic was taken at the March 18 1974 Vancouver show. RS said that both Dennis and Mike streaked and then exchanged outfits!! The Mike/Dennis relationship was pretty complicated

The Mike/Dennis relationship was pretty complicated I'm guessing that since Endless Summer wasn't quite out yet (I assume) that Mike was still willng to be more liberal. Plus, I have read Stebbons several times say that Mike and Dennis were getting along ok until 1977. Title: Re: Status of ED ROACH's book ??? Post by: urbanite on February 02, 2009, 03:31:02 PM Maybe by 1977 Mike was a little bit more mature and tired some of the stuff that might have seemed amusing 10 years before. Dennis Wilson is an interesting character to me, really grew as a song writer and musician, but regressed as a person as he got older.
Title: Re: Status of ED ROACH's book ??? Post by: Ed Roach on February 02, 2009, 10:13:22 PM Well, this is ironic... I'm trying to get the time to tell the streaking story, and suddenly I come home to find you guys making me think & respond to Dennis & Mike's relationship. And, while it may seem trite to say you'll have to wait for my book, it's not something I'll get into here.
Suffice to say, when Dennis & I first bonded, back in the late sixties, Mike was still somewhat psychedelicized. That is to say, he was still in and a part of 'the sixties', and still enjoyed Dennis' influence.(http://home.earthlink.net/~tinseltowncars/images/1__429_.JPG) Things changed drastically during my first move to L.A., and they weren't ever the same between those two: (http://home.earthlink.net/~tinseltowncars/images/DWML.JPG) However, Ill never stop believing that Mike loved & appreciated Dennis; but I also don't think he ever got over being jealous of him... RS said that both Dennis and Mike streaked and then exchanged outfits!! The Mike/Dennis relationship was pretty complicated Sure I remember it being in Rolling Stone! ( I was credited, wasn't I?) Do you know, at that time it was the most purchased, and yet unpublished, photograph that I had taken? It was originally licensed by Newsweek, who later decided not to run it, deeming it a publicity stunt. Then Playboy/Playgirl purchased it, but didn't run it because it didn't feature frontal nudity. However, DW & I played around with them awhile, as they made offers to make him, and eventually he & his family, a centerfold... That's what eventually led to he & Karen appearing in Playgirl - and also introduced he & I to several Playmates! Title: Re: Status of ED ROACH's book ??? Post by: Dove Nested Towers on February 03, 2009, 02:23:30 PM Hello Ed,
Your presence here is much appreciated and very refreshing, the raw honesty and close cameraderie in your memories of Dennis and the band are unique and fascinating. Can't wait for your book! Hey, Global Moderators, what does it take to be an Honored Guest anyway? Just curious. :) Title: Re: Status of ED ROACH's book ??? Post by: MZ6 on February 03, 2009, 03:32:36 PM Ed, I'd just like to add my own thanks to those already posted. I remember over the years seeing your credit attributed to many memorable photos of the Beach Boys. And I appreciate you now taking the time to further add to what you've already documented of their story.
Title: Re: Status of ED ROACH's book ??? Post by: Lady on April 14, 2009, 04:11:05 PM Ed,
Will you be including some of Dennis' artwork (drawings) in your book? Title: Re: Status of ED ROACH's book ??? Post by: Ed Roach on April 15, 2009, 10:28:25 PM Thank you, Lady. You're too kind for asking, and for starting this thread to begin with.
Unfortunately, I have the same answer Jon Stebbins gave recently regarding his book, and for the same reason: we're both involved in other projects right now, one of which will be airing before too much longer. However, I do return to the book whenever time permits. To answer your question, I definitely intend to include some of his artwork. I'd love for everyone to get to see the complete birthday card he & other friends did for me, that his self portrait from the last pages of The Real Beach Boy was taken from. And I was recently looking at a fantastic finger painting of a sailboat he did as a child, which Audrey had given to me years ago. Title: Re: Status of ED ROACH's book ??? I genuinely can't wait until your book comes out. As you can tell from all the nice posts on your behalf, there are many of us looking forward to your book (and who enjoy your posts.) With the quality of your photos and your great backstories, there's no doubt that the book will be a success! Best of luck! |
