Title: What tracks would be on your BB compilation if...
Post by: roll plymouth rock on January 20, 2009, 09:39:16 PM
...you were compiling a Best Of The Beach Boys album of tracks released between the Smiley Smile-Sunflower period. There is a lot of interesting/enduring material from the boys during this time, but I've always felt the material from this time could be presented with more more coherence. So, if you were asked to put together a compilation that showcased their best work from this era, what would be on your cd and in what sequence? Non-album tracks and rarities are game!

A compilation disc with these songs would blow some minds and cause a great deal of confusion if released to the public as a  beach boys collection.

I think they should do it.  If it were unknown Beatles or Stone songs it would already have been done.

I agree, and I guess that's what I mean when saying that the quality of the material is definitely here in this era, but for the average (non obsessive) music fan to get into it, the best stuff needs to be presented a bit more coherently. I love this creative period in the Boys' history!

I tried your mix out and I like the flow of it! I added the Lei'd In Hawaii rehearsal version of God Only Knows between Cool Water + Cottonfields though

Blow, it does not! It's a catchy-ass song, and I like Ed Carter's lead guitar.

I've always tried to include SOME of this era in compilations but it becomes to unwieldy when mixed with other eras.   This is the way to do it.

A two disc set of the SS/WH through SU era.

Question is;  what to do with the good stuff from 74-75 through Somewhere Near Japan?  I think yet another era compilation is in order. :lol

Hmmm.  I'm trying to make a 80-present day double CD (including solo stuff), but apart from the, let's say, variable quality of the material, the varying quality of the production styles makes it an uneasy listen - especially 85, BW88, SIP and Imagination.  Not pleasant.

Are you including Keepin' The Summer Alive in this comp or starting after it?

I would have to go one more album and from Smiley Smile to Surf's Up.....this is actually my favorite period, so here goes:
Heroes and Villians
Good Vibrations
Wonderful
Wild Honey
I was made to love her
Darlin
Let the wind blow
How she boogalooed it
Friends
Do it again
I can hear music
All I want to do
Cotton Fields
Never learn not not love
our prayer
Slip on through
This whole world
Add some music to your day
Got to know the woman
It's about time
All I wanna do
Forever
Our sweet love
At my window
Long promised road
Feel Flows
Til I die
Surfs Up

Surf's Up and Sunflower are my favorite BB's albums ever

On a related topic.  I have been really digging the Friends album again lately, so I have made a Friends deluxe mix to listen to at work.  Friends is the last album I really feel the mastery of Brian on until maybe 15 Big Ones, and even then it is a very different feel.

The flow isn't the best, but it is fun.

Meant For You
Friends
Wake The World
Be Here In The Morning
Friends (alternate version from unsurpassed masters)
When A Man Needs A Woman
Passing By
Anna Lee, The Healer
Little Bird
Friends (backing track from Unsurpassed masters)
Be Still
Busy Doin' Nothin'
Diamond Head
I Went To Sleep   (it is a Friends outtake with the same vibe)
Transcendental Meditation

(Plus bonus tracks from Brian's mid sixties/early seventies contributions, mostly with an autobiographical feel)

Walk On By
Old Folks At Home/Ol' Man River
Break Away
Time To Get Alone
We're Together Again
Cool Cool Water
This Whole World
A Day In the Life of a Tree
'Til I Die
Walk On By (2nd vocal overdub)    (Unsurpassed masters)
We're Together Again (string overdub)
Aren't You Glad   1
I'd Love Just Once To See You
Sweet Mountain
This Whole World (American Spring version)
Thinkin' 'Bout You Baby (American Spring version)
Walk On By (2nd vocal overdub)   (Unsurpassed master vol 20)
Break Away [Alternate Mono Mix]

Break Away [Alternate Mono Mix]

Excellent choice. Definitely the least annoying mix of this great song.
