Title: TM Song argument Post by: Fall Breaks on January 14, 2009, 02:56:37 PM I always wondered who's saying (yelling) what here. If someone could take the time to transcribe I would be grateful. Also, does anyone know if this was Brian's idea or not? Seems like a Brian put on, sort of like he'd try to see exactly what crazy idea he could get away with. Like the others going "Okay, we'll let him have his way on this one, otherwise he might get back into bed". But that's just me speculating.
Title: Re: TM Song argument Post by: punkinhead on January 14, 2009, 03:32:33 PM Dennis: "Hey you, get off my lawn"
Carl: "You keep out of it" Title: Re: TM Song argument Post by: Bicyclerider on January 14, 2009, 05:12:39 PM It's a recycling/replay of the Vegetables argument session to me - clearly a Murry/Brian psychodrama at it's core, it's something Brian found hilarious and tried to do several times - the barroom fight he talked about including in Heroes is another example.

I thought it was Mike, too. Brian never should've gone with the "argument" in the first place, it's hard on the ears. On The Mike Douglas Show in 1976, Al Jardine sang TM Song with an alternate intro. It wasn't great, but it sounded better than four guys yelling. I always thought TM song had potential, I liked the melody and changes.... Title: Re: TM Song argument Post by: MBE on January 14, 2009, 08:29:03 PM That's one of the only vintage films around I don't have. Man I would like to see that.
Title: Re: TM Song argument Post by: punkinhead on January 14, 2009, 08:44:37 PM i second that MBE
Title: Re: TM Song argument Post by: c-man on January 14, 2009, 08:58:03 PM I agree it's Mike yelling "You keep outta this!". I hear Al, Dennis, Mike, and Brian, but no Carl.
Title: Re: TM Song argument Post by: Sheriff John Stone on January 14, 2009, 09:09:55 PM OK, I couldn't help it, I HAD to analyze it, I need a life.... At :22 who says "What's going on here?"
Title: Re: TM Song argument Post by: Aegir on January 15, 2009, 12:36:52 AM Here's what I got so far.
??: Listen! Listen! I saw the whole thing! ??: I'm in the driveway! Mike: Eh, what are you talking about, lawn? Dennis: Hey, you! Mike: Hey what? Dennis: Will you, will you get off my front lawn with that car? Mike: Eh, shuddup. Dennis: What are you doin'? Brian: Hey, you can't talk to him like that. ??: Yeah, what's goin' on here? Dennis: I'm gonna call the police! ??: Hey, listen, I saw the whole thing, and you're a... Mike: You keep out of it! [at this point everyone starts arguing over each other. I can't understand most it it] ??: Come on guys, let's play it cool! Mike: What are you talkin' about? Mike: Oh, why don't you go... ??: What's goin' on here? Al: Phew, it's time for me to meditate. Title: Re: TM Song argument Post by: c-man on January 15, 2009, 05:32:13 AM "Hey, you can't talk to him like that" is Al, not Brian.

Remember that Brian quote from the Ben Fong-Torres BB interview in '81: "I like arguments...other people's arguments" ;) Title: Re: TM Song argument Post by: Christian on January 16, 2009, 05:01:23 AM What did that alternate intro sound like? Itīs a nice little intro, just Al accompanied by piano (btw, piano is the only instrument throughout the song with a little bit of muted trumpet at the end): "When hustle was the name of the game I couldnīt stand the strain then Maharishi said to meditate, just meditate itīs natural as the rain" Title: Re: TM Song argument Post by: Magic Transistor Radio on January 16, 2009, 06:39:11 PM If it is Mike and Dennis, they probably recorded a real argument between the two of them. Of course, there would probably be more cussing if it were.
Title: Re: TM Song argument Post by: punkinhead on January 16, 2009, 11:26:28 PM actually, when i think of this era, i remember dennis talking highly of Mike about 10,000 Years or Everyone's in love with You; or is it the other way around Mike saying that about Dennis?
Title: Re: TM Song argument Post by: MBE on January 17, 2009, 12:01:58 AM Right I mentioned a Chicago interview both did in 1976 and they seem to get along quite well. I mean this was before Dennis really declined so there may have still been less tention. Anyway Dennis really seems to like Everyone's In Love With You. I'm not trying to say they were best buddies but it was a lot better in 1976 then anytime later.
Title: Re: TM Song argument Post by: Magic Transistor Radio on January 18, 2009, 11:19:29 PM I almost get the sense, from videos and pictures, that Mike and Dennis were at times buds. But two guys with big egos that will be friends for a few days, get in a fight, then a few weeks later are friends again for a few days, etc... I believe in one of Jon Stebbins books, he talked about them being roomates in the early 60s and had a bitter fight over a girl. But later were laughing about it.
