Title: Alternate/personalized tracklists? Post by: coco1997 on January 06, 2009, 10:38:07 AM Hey everyone,
I was wondering if anyone had ever come up with any personalized tracklists/playlists for any of the Beach Boys albums. I'm particularly interested in playlists for the records from "Smiley Smile"-"Surf's Up," when it seems like their albums were a real hodge-podge of different recordings (i.e. with some "SMiLE" tracks thrown in). But my request is that you can only use songs that were either on the actual album (for example, "All I Wanna Do" on "Sunflower") or recorded/demoed for that album but unused ("San Miguel" on "Sunflower"). I'd also ask that your playlists don't contain any greater number of songs than were actually on that record, such as how "Surf's Up" had ten tracks. Thanks! Title: Re: Alternate/personalized tracklists? Post by: The Shift on January 06, 2009, 10:52:36 AM and for tomorrow's homework...
What about a :"new" BB's album rounding up ONLY WORTHY solo tracks, stray releases and others that could form a respectable come-back album. I've these in mid so far: BW: Midnight's Another Day Southern California This Song Wants to Sleep WIth You AJ: California Energy Blues Califonia Saga (from the ESQ One in A Million CD) Papa Loved Momma DW: Love Remember Me Tug of Love Album Tag SOng Cocktails BJ: Erm... ML: Cool Head, Warm Heart (perhaps... undecided) CW: Hurry Love If I Could Talk to Love Givin' You Up I'd like to have the potential to add tracks by Dave, Ricky, Blondie et al but don't have their repertoires. Title: Re: Alternate/personalized tracklists? Post by: Sheriff John Stone on January 06, 2009, 04:34:21 PM Whenever this topic comes up, I pull out MIU. So, if you've seen this before, scroll on....
While 15 Big Ones and Love You were not, should I say, complete successes, they did give fans their money's worth - quantity-wise - with 15 and 14 songs respectively. Then, unfortunately, MIU dipped to only 12 songs. I believe, with just the addition of 2 songs, "Good Timin" and "Our Team", which were available, MIU would've improved by a full grade. This is my alternative MIU: SIDE A 1. She's Got Rhythm 2. Peggy Sue 3. Wontcha Come Out Tonight 4. My Diane 5. Come Go With Me 6. Hey Little Tomboy 7. Sweet Sunday Kind Of Love SIDE B 8. Good Timin' 9. Kona Coast 10. Belles Of Paris 11. Pitter Patter 12. Matchpoint Of Our Love 13. Winds Of Change 14. Our Team Title: Re: Alternate/personalized tracklists? I think it flows better, both musically and lyrically. What do you think?
SIDE A 1. Add Some Music To Your Day 2. Got To Know The Woman 3. Slip On Through 4. Our Sweet Love 5. Forever 6. Deidre SIDE B 7. Tears In The Morning 8. At My Window 9. Cool Cool Water 10. All I Wanna Do 11. This Whole World 12. It's About Time Title: Re: Alternate/personalized tracklists? Side One: Long Promised Road San Miguel (Lookin' at Tomorrow) - eliminate if you insist on five tracks per side Big Sur (Landlocked version) Sound of Free Don't Go Near the Water Side Two: Surf's Up Feel Flows Disney Girls 4th of July 'Til I Die Wouldn't It Be Nice to Live Again (hope this gets out of the vault sometime! I do have my fanmix of All Summer Long; chronologically it may be a little off, but I for one don't care!:
SIDE ONE: 1. I Get Around 2. All Dressed Up for School 3. Be True to Your School (Single Mix) 4. Drive-In 5. Little Honda 6. All Summer Long 7. Do You Remember SIDE TWO: 8. Carl's Big Chance 9. I just remembered I kinda did a Beach Boys Folk Album once, went something like this, heavy on the Al Jardine I know: 1. California Saga-Big Sur 2. California Saga-Breaks of Eagles 3. California Saga-California 4. Santa Ana Winds 5. Lookin at Tomorrow 6. Long Promised Road (pioneer saga) 7. The Trader 8. Add Some Music to Your Day 9. Cottonfields (single mix) 10. Post by: Sheriff John Stone on January 14, 2009, 01:26:42 PM 15 Big Ones was the first "new" Beach Boys' album I ever bought, so it will always have a soft spot with me. Yeah, you had to work a little bit to enjoy it; it was enjoy a song or two, sit through a clunker, enjoy another song or two, sit through another clunker. Remember, those were the days of tonearms, no remote controls. It started to get a little rough by the middle of Side 2, right around "A Casual Look" and "Blueberry Hill". I always hung on, though, for "Back Home". Anyway, when it came out on CD, I could rectify the problem. This is my alternative sequence for 15 Big Ones:
SIDE 1 1. Rock And Roll Music 2. Palisades Park 3. A Casual Look 4. Everyone's In Love With You 5. It's OK 6. Susie Cincinnatti 7. In The Still Of The Night SIDE 2 8. TM Song 9. That Same Song 10. Blueberry Hill 11. Had To Phone Ya 12. Talk To Me 13. Back Home 14. Chapel Of Love 15. Just Once In My Life Title: Re: Alternate/personalized tracklists? I like the album already, but your sequence/song choices would have probably made it a classic. Title: Re: Alternate/personalized tracklists? Post by: donald on January 14, 2009, 02:21:19 PM I've never been totally happy with a BB comp. I've put together. I don't even think I could do a box set in under seven discs.
I do like the notion of expanding 15 Big Ones into 30 Big Ones just covering the best of the 15 BO era, released and unreleased, with a few choice oldies from previous and later lps. A true BB oldies cover album. Keeping straight the release dates versus original version recording dates is a very tedious exercise. This first got out of control with 20/20 and seems to have gone on for the next 8 or so years. Title: Re: Alternate/personalized tracklists? Post by: Ram4 on June 01, 2011, 02:52:10 PM I decided to do my own 1969-70 "What If" compilation that I call Add Some Music. I'm sure many of you have done something similar. I love it. It flows wonderful and it's great to have the Brian stuff in there. For some reason I was hesitant to put on Break Away, it feels a little out of place, and Soulful Old Man Sunshine kind of does too - but I decided to leave them. I left off Back Home because I don't really have a great early version of it, and Carnival would detract from it. One cool moment is the end of Tears into Cottonfields which have that echoey, distant sound to them.
Add Some Music To Your Day San Miguel Good Time (original mix) Our Sweet Love Lady (original) Deirdre Susie Cincinnati (original mix) All I Wanna Do Slip On Through Loop de Loop (original mix) Celebrate The News Games Two Can Play Tears In The Morning Cottonfields (single version) When Girls Get Together A Time To Live In Dreams This Whole World Break Away Forever I Just Got My Pay It's About Time H.E.L.P. Is On The Way (original mix) At My Window Got To Know The Woman Soulful Old Man Sunshine (original mix) 4th of July Cool, Cool Water Curious what you think and if I've left anything off that you might disagree with. Side 1: Sound of Free Long Promised Road HELP is On the Way 4th of July Barbara Disney Girls Side 2: Feel Flows Welfare Song Day in the Life of a Tree Til I Die Surf's Up So obviously, side 2 remains the same, I think, while side 1 is mostly 'new'. And yes, I would love to add "Burlesque" and "WIBN2LA" if only we could get them... The only 'bump' in this lineup is Disney Girls, which still sounds a little too MOR for my tastes, though I do like the middle 8. Any other "Surf's Up" lineups out there? Still I Dream Of It (Good Vibrations box) It just barely fits on a single CD, and it tells the "story" I want. I love this music just as much as the Today/Summer Days/Pet Sounds era music -- maybe more. Title: Re: Alternate/personalized tracklists? Post by: Disney Boy (1985) on July 28, 2012, 01:17:17 PM No need to really tamper with any pre-'76 albums as far as i'm concerned; LA however has always seemed like an album that had the potential to be really fantastic, rather than just plain good, as it ultimately was.
My thoughts on it are this... After the sales/quality disaster of MIU it seems Carl and Dennis were, quite rightly, being allowed to rule the roost, and to me it's a real shame that they didn't draw more from Bambu. So i'd include more songs from that album, plus some of the top quality tracks the band recorded around this time which were likewise inexplicably left to gather dust in the vaults, and i'd lose HCNT (because, and i don't care what it's defenders say, it's an embaressment) and i'd use the far superior Adult/Child version of Shortenin' Bread (yeah, production-wise that farty synth doesn't fit, but then neither does the screeching guitar on the released version, so hey ho...). Anyway, here is my dream LA. Sequence it yourselves and listen, it works brilliantly: SIDE ONE 1. Good Timin' 2. It's Not Too Late (the delicate fade of this track segues perfectly into the quiet chiming opening of Full Sail) 3. Full Sail 4. Angel Come Home 5. California Feelin' (the solo Dennis vocal at the start of Love Surrounds Me works as a great contrast following the full group harmony ending of California Feelin') 6. Love Surrounds Me 7. Lady Lynda SIDE TWO 8. Santa Ana Winds (the lovely LA version of course, which has none of the dated tacky-sounding production as heard on the KTSA version) 9. Lookin' Down The Coast 10. Sumahama 11. Baby Blue 12. Goin' South 13. Shortenin' Bread (Adult/Child version) Title: Re: Alternate/personalized tracklists? I have tried to combine parts of LOVE YOU and POB along with other material for a "BEACH BOYS '77" type of record...but it never quite works. "What's Wrong" and "Honkin' Down the Highway" aren't bad as a one-two or two-one punch. The melancholy of "Moonshine" dovetails with "The Night Was So Young". To me anyway. Post by: bluesno1fann on June 12, 2014, 08:28:27 PM No need to really tamper with any pre-'76 albums as far as i'm concerned; LA however has always seemed like an album that had the potential to be really fantastic, rather than just plain good, as it ultimately was. Shortenin' Bread (Adult/Child version) Interesting. I'd replace Sumahama with the single version of Here Comes The Night and Goin' South with It's A Beautiful Day Title: Re: Alternate/personalized tracklists? Post by: Steve Latshaw on June 13, 2014, 09:22:43 AM For me, side one of LA Light is near perfect, for what was intended. I think Bruce was trying to put together something resembling a late 70s Sunflower, suitably "matured" for the slick pop and disco market at the time. The large weakness, for me, is side two. He's gotten a lot of flack for including the 11 minute disco version of Here Comes the Night... but in light of historical information and the great session detail from AGD, that longer version may have simply been included due to a lack of suitable material in a reasonably finished state. For me, I disagree with the fondness for the early mix of Santa Ana Winds... it sounds sparse and sloppy, with less than adequate lyrics. The finished version on KTSA is one of the best tracks on that album.
My personal mix for LA side one Good Timin Lady Lynda Full Sail Angel Come Home It's Over Now (MIC mix) Love Surrounds Me Sumahama side two Here Comes The Night (single mix) Baby Blue California Feelin' (MIC mix) Brian's Back (MIC mix) Goin South Shortnin Bread Country Pie (Celebration) As for KTSA, I've said this before, but I think the primary problem with this album is not what's on it... but what was left off. side one Keepin' The Summer Alive Goin To The Beach Da Do Ron Ron Oh, Darlin' Some of Your Love Wild Situation (Bambu) Livin' With A Heartache School Day side two It's A Beautiful Day Goin On Why Don't They Let Us Fall In Love Sunshine When Girls Get Together It's Not Too Late (Bambu) Santa Ana Winds Endless Harmony Title: Re: Alternate/personalized tracklists? Post by: Quzi on June 17, 2014, 03:11:14 AM Love You is one of my favourite albums of all time but it's well noted as being a difficult listen the first time around. I've introduced both the album proper and a re-envisioned version to friends and most seem more receptive to my tracklist, probably because it's trimmer, more evenly dispersed and those who are fans of ballads don't have to wait till the second side to get to those songs.
Let Us Go On This Way Roller Skating Child I'll Bet He's Nice Honkin' Down the Highway Solar System I Wanna Pick You Up Johnny Carson The Night Was So Young Airplane Mona The Fairytale Still I Dream of It Notes on the inclusions: - "The Fairytale" is the instrumental Mt. Vernon theme - it's a controversial addition, but I find it fits in just a little too seamlessly alongside all the other great synth work here to exclude it. It harkens back to the effectiveness of instrumentals like "Summer Means New Love" and "Diamond Head" in being a tasteful respite from the rest of the album's vocal harmony. - The version of "Still I Dream of It" I use is the booted demo where Brian coughs in the beginning and flubs during the bridge's "till then I'm just a dreamer" climax. It's rougher than the IJWMFTT edit for sure, but I feel the mistakes make Brian seem all the more human which subsequently pushes his cry for help to something all the more poignant. I like your thinking concerning the version of Still I Dream of It, you really thought about it. Some folks don't push for specific versions (booted or otherwise) but that all makes real good sense. I'm very fascinated about your Fairytale instrumental idea....is this a "what if"/hypothetical recording or are you declaring a specific released/unreleased version? I've always wondered about the lack of instrumentals in the 70s, besides the Mt. Vernon and Fairway material, there's not much. Perhaps Hey There Mama, but there's not much of an instrumental there. Oh, and what Short Skirts supposed to be an instrumental for 15 Big Ones? The instrumental to Had to Phone Ya is fab! Title: Re: Alternate/personalized tracklists? I really dig this sequence much more than 20/20 (which is still a great album!). I feel like if this was released instead of 20/20, we'd have another classic on our hands...sure, as Beach Boys fans, we believe every other album is a classic, but the record buying public that knows Pet Sounds, that takes the Rolling Stone Top 500 albums seriously (which includes PS, Sunflower, POB, Today!) would consider this a "lost classic" of the Beach Boys...inevitabley, this album would have done just as bad as 20/20 unfortunately, but I think, perhaps, present day fans of past great albums would call this the best thing to happen in between Smile and Sunflower, as an artistic statement. Title: Re: Alternate/personalized tracklists? Post by: arnoldfringe2 on August 15, 2014, 11:13:37 AM That Break Away tracklist is brilliant! I've made a playlist in itunes of the "album" and I love it...almost! I see that there is a seltaeb1012002 remix of Lonely Days. I don't have this and I've looked all over for it. I have P.M 'd seltaeb but cos I'm dying to hear the remix of Lonely Days, does anybody have a MP3 file of it that could be passed my way, or a link, please?
Cheers Shane Title: Re: Alternate/personalized tracklists? Post by: arnoldfringe2 on August 15, 2014, 11:55:21 PM Hi Everyone
