Title: Alternate/personalized tracklists?
Post by: coco1997 on January 06, 2009, 10:38:07 AM
Hey everyone,

I was wondering if anyone had ever come up with any personalized tracklists/playlists for any of the Beach Boys albums. I'm particularly interested in playlists for the records from "Smiley Smile"-"Surf's Up," when it seems like their albums were a real hodge-podge of different recordings (i.e. with some "SMiLE" tracks thrown in). But my request is that you can only use songs that were either on the actual album (for example, "All I Wanna Do" on "Sunflower") or recorded/demoed for that album but unused ("San Miguel" on "Sunflower"). I'd also ask that your playlists don't contain any greater number of songs than were actually on that record, such as how "Surf's Up" had ten tracks.

Thanks!

and for tomorrow's homework...

What about a :"new" BB's album rounding up ONLY WORTHY solo tracks, stray releases and others that could form a respectable come-back album.

I've these in mid so far:

BW:

Midnight's Another Day
Southern California
This Song Wants to Sleep WIth You

AJ:
California Energy Blues
Califonia Saga (from the ESQ One in A Million CD)
Papa Loved Momma

DW:
Love Remember Me
Tug of Love
Album Tag SOng
Cocktails

BJ:
Erm...

ML:
Cool Head, Warm Heart (perhaps... undecided)

CW:
Hurry Love
If I Could Talk to Love
Givin' You Up

I'd like to have the potential to add tracks by Dave, Ricky, Blondie et al but don't have their repertoires.

Hey, runners! I'm just getting some outside advice.  :)

Whenever this topic comes up, I pull out MIU. So, if you've seen this before, scroll on....

While 15 Big Ones and Love You were not, should I say, complete successes, they did give fans their money's worth - quantity-wise - with 15 and 14 songs respectively. Then, unfortunately, MIU dipped to only 12 songs. I believe, with just the addition of 2 songs, "Good Timin" and "Our Team", which were available, MIU would've improved by a full grade. This is my alternative MIU:

SIDE A

1. She's Got Rhythm
2. Peggy Sue
3. Wontcha Come Out Tonight
4. My Diane
5. Come Go With Me
6. Hey Little Tomboy
7. Sweet Sunday Kind Of Love

SIDE B

8. Good Timin'
9. Kona Coast
10. Belles Of Paris
11. Pitter Patter
12. Matchpoint Of Our Love
13. Winds Of Change
14. Our Team

And, an alternative sequence for Sunflower. I think it flows better, both musically and lyrically. What do you think?

SIDE A

1. Add Some Music To Your Day
2. Got To Know The Woman
3. Slip On Through
4. Our Sweet Love
5. Forever
6. Deidre

SIDE B

7. Tears In The Morning
8. At My Window
9. Cool Cool Water
10. All I Wanna Do
11. This Whole World
12. It's About Time

Surf's Up:  there should be six songs per side (the only reason there were five was because Dennis withdrew his)

Side One:
Long Promised Road
San Miguel
(Lookin' at Tomorrow) - eliminate if you insist on five tracks per side
Big Sur (Landlocked version)
Sound of Free
Don't Go Near the Water

Side Two:
Surf's Up
Feel Flows
Disney Girls
4th of July
'Til I Die
Wouldn't It Be Nice to Live Again (hope this gets out of the vault sometime!  Until then, A Day in the Life of a Tree can go between Disney Girls and 4th of July).

Really interesting sequencing here, Sheriff. Any other alternate tracklists? (Say, for "Smiley Smile" or "Wild Honey"?)

Just noticed this one, too, Bicyclerider. Once I finish listening through Sheriff's proposed "Sunflower" retooling, I'll give this a listen.  :)

I realise the dates don't quite work out, but WTF...
Personalised/fantasy...

Light Album (a strong album - songs about California and the ocean giving way to songs about love):

01   It's a Beautiful Day
02   California Feelin'
03   Santa Ana Winds
04   Down the Coastline/Song of the Whale
05   Don't Fight the Sea
06   Full Sail
07   Sumahama
08   Good Timin'
09   Thank You Baby
10   Baby Blue
11   Love Surrounds Me
12   Angel Come Home
13   Go and Get That Girl

MIU (a 20/20 for the 70s):

01   River Song
02   Pitter Patter
03   Country Pie
04   Pacific Ocean Blues
05   Winter Symphony
06   Winds of Change
07   Sherry, She Needs Me
08   I Write The Songs
09   Still I Dream of It
10   Sweet Sunday Kinda Love
11   Lines
12   My Diane

Love You - as is!

15 Big Rock 'n' Roll Ones

01   Rock and Roll Music
02   Chapel of Love
03   Talk to Me/Tallahassee Lassie
04   Palisades Park
05   Shake, Rattle and Roll
06   Blueberry Hill
07   Peggy Sue
08   Runnin' Bear
09   Mony Mony
10   Sea Cruise
11   Come Go With Me
12   On Broadway
13   A Casual Look
14   In The Still of the Night
15   Just Once in My Life

Somebody on this board (SJS?) suggested a summer-is-fun type album from the various tracks that were around from 76-78.  Here's my selection - 15 Little Ones - although I'm a little reluctant to include Susie Cincinnati...

01   Woncha Come Out Tonight
02   It's Okay
03   Susie Cincinnati
04   Back Home
05   Kona Coast
06   It's Trying to Say
07   That Same Song
08   Shortenin' Bread (the earlier version, of course)
09   She's Just Out To Get You
10   Had to Phone Ya
11   Matchpoint of Our Love
12   Almost Summer
13   Hey Little Tomboy
14   She's Got Rhythm

I've done a coupla these, I did a real good one for the Brian is Back era of 1976-77, but I don't have it with me now. I'll post it tomorrow. I do have my fanmix of All Summer Long; chronologically it may be a little off, but I for one don't care!:

SIDE ONE:
1. I Get Around
2. All Dressed Up for School
3. Be True to Your School (Single Mix)
4. Drive-In
5. Little Honda
6. All Summer Long
7. Do You Remember

SIDE TWO:
8. Carl's Big Chance
9. Wendy
10. Girls on the Beach
11. Hushabye
12. We'll Run Away
13. NOT SURE-ANY IDEAS?
14. Don't Back Down

Makes for a heck of an album!

I just remembered I kinda did a Beach Boys Folk Album once, went something like this, heavy on the Al Jardine I know:

1. California Saga-Big Sur
2. California Saga-Breaks of Eagles
3. California Saga-California
4. Santa Ana Winds
5. Lookin at Tomorrow
6. Long Promised Road (pioneer saga)
7. The Trader

8. Add Some Music to Your Day
9. Cottonfields (single mix)
10. Country Air (?)
11. Take a Load off Your Feet, Pete
12. Good Timin'
13. Hold On Dear Brother
14. California Feelin (can't quite explain why this one--always felt like a soul/folk tune to me, anyway)

You have to be creative, I guess...

I think, on reflection, regardless of the appearance of Good Time on Love You, Susie Cincinnati belongs on a two disc Sunflower and should be replaced by Go and Get That Girl, leaving LA with 12 tracks.

Another good one would be Winds of Change:

California Feelin'
Santa Ana Winds
Down the Coastline/Song of the Whale
Don't Fight the Sea
Full Sail
Pitter Patter
Winds of Change

Good Tiimin'
Angel Come Home
Thank You Baby
Love Surrounds Me
Sumahama
Baby Blue
My Diane

15 Big Ones was the first "new" Beach Boys' album I ever bought, so it will always have a soft spot with me. Yeah, you had to work a little bit to enjoy it; it was enjoy a song or two, sit through a clunker, enjoy another song or two, sit through another clunker. Remember, those were the days of tonearms, no remote controls. It started to get a little rough by the middle of Side 2, right around "A Casual Look" and "Blueberry Hill". I always hung on, though, for "Back Home". Anyway, when it came out on CD, I could rectify the problem. This is my alternative sequence for 15 Big Ones:

SIDE 1

1. Rock And Roll Music
2. Palisades Park
3. A Casual Look
4. Everyone's In Love With You
5. It's OK
6. Susie Cincinnatti
7. In The Still Of The Night

SIDE 2

8. TM Song
9. That Same Song
10. Blueberry Hill
11. Had To Phone Ya
12. Talk To Me
13. Back Home
14. Chapel Of Love
15. Just Once In My Life

Wow, THAT would have made for a killer album!  I like the album already, but your sequence/song choices would have probably made it a classic.

I've never been totally happy with a BB comp. I've put together.  I don't even think I could do a box set in under seven discs.

I do like the notion of expanding 15 Big Ones into 30 Big Ones just covering the best of the 15 BO era, released and unreleased, with a few choice oldies from previous and later lps.  A true BB oldies cover album.

Keeping straight the release dates versus original version recording dates is a very tedious exercise.   This first got out of control with 20/20 and seems to have gone on for the next 8 or so years.

I decided to do my own 1969-70 "What If" compilation that I call Add Some Music.  I'm sure many of you have done something similar.  I love it.  It flows wonderful and it's great to have the Brian stuff in there.  For some reason I was hesitant to put on Break Away, it feels a little out of place, and Soulful Old Man Sunshine kind of does too - but I decided to leave them.  I left off Back Home because I don't really have a great early version of it, and Carnival would detract from it.  One cool moment is the end of Tears into Cottonfields which have that echoey, distant sound to them.

Add Some Music To Your Day
San Miguel
Good Time (original mix)
Our Sweet Love
Lady (original)
Deirdre
Susie Cincinnati (original mix)
All I Wanna Do
Slip On Through
Loop de Loop (original mix)
Celebrate The News
Games Two Can Play
Tears In The Morning
Cottonfields (single version)
When Girls Get Together
A Time To Live In Dreams
This Whole World
Break Away
Forever
I Just Got My Pay
It's About Time
H.E.L.P. Is On The Way (original mix)
At My Window
Got To Know The Woman
Soulful Old Man Sunshine (original mix)
4th of July
Cool, Cool Water

Curious what you think and if I've left anything off that you might disagree with.

I'm at work, so going by memory here for my own recent SURF'S UP recompilation:

Side 1:
Sound of Free
Long Promised Road
HELP is On the Way
4th of July
Barbara
Disney Girls

Side 2:
Feel Flows
Welfare Song
Day in the Life of a Tree
Til I Die
Surf's Up

So obviously, side 2 remains the same, I think, while side 1 is mostly 'new'. And yes, I would love to add "Burlesque" and "WIBN2LA" if only we could get them...

The only 'bump' in this lineup is Disney Girls, which still sounds a little too MOR for my tastes, though I do like the middle 8.

Any other "Surf's Up" lineups out there?

"4th of July" is a 1971 recording.

A Time To Live In Dreams is a 1968 recording.
I know, a couple of questionable choices, but I figured what the hell.  Dreams could have been used on a late 1970 release, and I like 4th of July a lot, so I threw it on, but historically I guess it shouldn't be on this.

I haven't re-configured any albums (other than SMiLE  ;D), but when I have a hankerin' for some post-SMiLE Brian Wilson, this is the comp I made up to scratch that itch:

01. Heroes And Villains (Stereo Single Version) (Hawthorne, CA)
02. Vegetables (Stereo Mix) (Hawthorne, CA)
03. Wind Chimes (Smiley Smile)
04. Fall Breaks And Back To Winter (Smiley Smile)
05. Wonderful (Smiley Smile)
06. Whistle In (Smiley Smile)
07. Darlin' (Wild Honey)
08. Aren't You Glad (Wild Honey)
09. Let The Wind Blow (Stereo Remix) (Hawthorne, CA)
10. I'd Love Just Once To See You (Wild Honey)
11. Cool Cool Water (Good Vibrations box)
12. Can't Wait Too Long (Wild Honey bonus track, edited to match box set version)
13. Friends [with false start] (Friends)
14. Wake The World (Friends)
15. Passing By (Friends)
16. Busy Doin' Nothin' (Friends)
17. Diamond Head (Friends)
18. Sail Plane Song (Endless Harmony Soundtrack)
19. I Went To Sleep (20/20)
20. Time To Get Alone (20/20)
21. Break Away (Friends & 20/20 bonus track)
22. Games Two Can Play (Good Vibrations box)
23. H.E.L.P. Is On The Way (Good Vibrations box)
24. Add Some Music To Your Day (Sunflower)
25. Good Time (The Beach Boys Love You)
26. This Whole World (Sunflower)
27. 'Til I Die (Endless Harmony Soundtrack; edited to match Brian's live version)
28. Fairy Tale Music (Good Vibrations box)
29. It's Over Now [speed corrected] (Good Vibrations box)
30. Still I Dream Of It (Good Vibrations box)

It just barely fits on a single CD, and it tells the "story" I want. I love this music just as much as the Today/Summer Days/Pet Sounds era music -- maybe more.

I like that, looks like quite a cohesive (and fairly Brian-centered) album. But why leave off "Be With Me"? That's such a killer song, if mostly in terms of Dennis' vocal performance and the overall atmosphere (which is so genuinely dark and eerie it's hard to believe this came out so shortly after the light and good-natured Friends album...).

Good question, as Be With Me was the one I was in two minds about. The only reason it was absent was that I'm not massively keen on it, although it could easily be swapped out with Never learn Not To Love.

great thread!
I'm liking what I'm seeing,
I'll try to submit one soon as I love these types of threads.
BTW, on a MIU mix that was on the 1st page, I saw a song called Thank You Baby...What's the word on that?
I've never heard of that...let alone from that era.

BTW, while I'm at it, I was gonna put Skatetown USA on a mix for LA, but I couldn't remember if it was recorded during that era or KTSA?

I've got a home-made 21-songs album called 'The Beach Boys' Lost Album' mostly formed with songs that were bonuses on the twofers. There's also 'The Little Girl I Once Knew', 'Trombone Dixie' etc. Mostly songs that didn't make any album at their time of recording :

01.The Lord's Prayer (this works great as an opener-just like 'Our Prayer' and 'Think About The Days')
02.I Do
03.All Dressed Up For School
04.Graduation Day
05.The Little Girl I Once Knew
06.Trombone Dixie
07.Lonely Days
08.Old Folks at Home/Ol' Man River
09.Sail Plane Song
10.San Miguel
11.Loop-de-Loop (Flip Flop Flyin' In An Airplane)
12.Games Two Can Play
13.We're Together Again
14.Soulful Old Man Sunshine (incredible song)
15.I Just Got My Pay
16.H.E.L.P. Is On The Way
17.4th Of July (another brilliant tune)
18.Our Team
19.Sea Cruise
20.Winter Symphony (love this one a lot, too)
21.It's A Beautiful Day

10)Still I Dream Of It

Far more the product of individuals than a band but better song for song. The inclusion of "Love Remember Me" cripples BAMBU after the loss of "Baby Blue" and "Love Surrounds Me" on L.A.

No need to really tamper with any pre-'76 albums as far as i'm concerned; LA however has always seemed like an album that had the potential to be really fantastic, rather than just plain good, as it ultimately was.
My thoughts on it are this... After the sales/quality disaster of MIU it seems Carl and Dennis were, quite rightly, being allowed to rule the roost, and to me it's a real shame that they didn't draw more from Bambu. So i'd include more songs from that album, plus some of the top quality tracks the band recorded around this time which were likewise inexplicably left to gather dust in the vaults, and i'd lose HCNT (because, and i don't care what it's defenders say, it's an embaressment) and i'd use the far superior Adult/Child version of Shortenin' Bread (yeah, production-wise that farty synth doesn't fit, but then neither does the screeching guitar on the released version, so hey ho...). Anyway, here is my dream LA. Sequence it yourselves and listen, it works brilliantly:

SIDE ONE
1. Good Timin'
2. It's Not Too Late (the delicate fade of this track segues perfectly into the quiet chiming opening of Full Sail)
3. Full Sail
4. Angel Come Home

Hey, I know this is a super old post, but anyways, "Thank You Baby" is a song by Bruce "teabagger" Johnston, from his album Going Public.

Take the best tracks from LOVE YOU, PACIFIC OCEAN BLUE, GOING PUBLIC and BLONDIE CHAPLIN (all 1977 releases) and what do you get? A real mess.  :-D

I have tried to combine parts of LOVE YOU and POB along with other material  for a "BEACH BOYS '77" type of record...but it never quite works. "What's Wrong" and "Honkin' Down the Highway" aren't bad as a one-two or two-one punch. The melancholy of "Moonshine" dovetails with "The Night Was So Young". To me anyway.

Here's my 15 Big Ones/ Love You mash. It's called "Brian's Back...And He's Pissed"

1. It's OK
2. Roller Skating Child
3. Mona
4. Had To Phone Ya (end is cut at 1:40 just after Marilyn says "Hey, Brian!")
5. I'll Bet He's Nice
6. Good Time

7. That Same Song (Gospel Choir version)
8. Susie Cincinnati
9. The Night Was So Young
10. Ding Dang (Oh yeah, you know you love it)
11. Airplane
12. Love Is A Woman (obligatory)

I like to cut most of the songs so they don't have fade outs, makes for a much easier flow. It was hard to add in enough 15BO tracks which were actually decent. But I enjoy this tracklisting better than listening to the two separately.

For me, side one of LA Light is near perfect, for what was intended.  I think Bruce was trying to put together something resembling a late 70s Sunflower, suitably "matured" for the slick pop and disco market at the time.  The large weakness, for me, is side two.  He's gotten a lot of flack for including the 11 minute disco version of Here Comes the Night... but in light of historical information and the great session detail from AGD, that longer version may have simply been included due to a lack of suitable material in a reasonably finished state.  For me, I disagree with the fondness for the early mix of Santa Ana Winds... it sounds sparse and sloppy, with less than adequate lyrics.  The finished version on KTSA is one of the best tracks on that album.

My personal mix for LA

side one
Good Timin
Lady Lynda
Full Sail
Angel Come Home
It's Over Now (MIC mix)
Love Surrounds Me
Sumahama

side two
Here Comes The Night (single mix)
Baby Blue
California Feelin' (MIC mix)
Brian's Back (MIC mix)
Goin South
Shortnin Bread
Country Pie (Celebration)

As for KTSA, I've said this before, but I think the primary problem with this album is not what's on it... but what was left off.

side one
Keepin' The Summer Alive
Goin To The Beach
Da Do Ron Ron
Oh, Darlin'
Some of Your Love
Wild Situation (Bambu)
Livin' With A Heartache
School Day

side two
It's A Beautiful Day
Goin On
Why Don't They Let Us Fall In Love
Sunshine
When Girls Get Together
It's Not Too Late (Bambu)
Santa Ana Winds
Endless Harmony

Love You is one of my favourite albums of all time but it's well noted as being a difficult listen the first time around. I've introduced both the album proper and a re-envisioned version to friends and most seem more receptive to my tracklist, probably because it's trimmer, more evenly dispersed and those who are fans of ballads don't have to wait till the second side to get to those songs.

Let Us Go On This Way
Roller Skating Child
I'll Bet He's Nice
Honkin' Down the Highway
Solar System
I Wanna Pick You Up

Johnny Carson
The Night Was So Young
Airplane
Mona
The Fairytale
Still I Dream of It

Notes on the inclusions:
- "The Fairytale" is the instrumental Mt. Vernon theme - it's a controversial addition, but I find it fits in just a little too seamlessly alongside all the other great synth work here to exclude it. It harkens back to the effectiveness of instrumentals like "Summer Means New Love" and "Diamond Head" in being a tasteful respite from the rest of the album's vocal harmony.

- The version of "Still I Dream of It" I use is the booted demo where Brian coughs in the beginning and flubs during the bridge's "till then I'm just a dreamer" climax. It's rougher than the IJWMFTT edit for sure, but I feel the mistakes make Brian seem all the more human which subsequently pushes his cry for help to something all the more poignant.

I tried making a whole other album from all that great late 60s material:

Side 1
01. Old Man River (Vocal Section)
02. Break Away
03. San Miguel
04. Celebrate The News
05. Back Home
06. I Just Got My Pay
07. Mona Kana

Side 2
01. Soulful Old Man Sunshine
02. Sail Plane Song
03. Where Is She?
04. Walk On By
05. We're Together Again
06. Old Folks At Home/ Old Man River
07. Can't Wait Too Long

I have always loved this 'missing' albums worth of tracks that could make another release from around this time.  My current playlist is;

A)
01. Old Man River (Vocal Section)
02. Soulful Old Man Sunshine
03. Loop De Loop
04. Games Two Can Play
05. Susie Cincinatti
06. Celebrate The News
07. Sound Of Free

B)
01. Break Away
02. I Just Got My Pay
03. Good Time
04. H.E.L.P Is On The Way
05. San Miguel
06. We're Together Again
07. Old Folks At Home/Old Man River

A real easy enjoyable set of tracks at 36 mins

I like your thinking concerning the version of Still I Dream of It, you really thought about it. Some folks don't push for specific versions (booted or otherwise) but that all makes real good sense.
I'm very fascinated about your Fairytale instrumental idea....is this a "what if"/hypothetical recording or are you declaring a specific released/unreleased version?
I've always wondered about the lack of instrumentals in the 70s, besides the Mt. Vernon and Fairway material, there's not much. Perhaps Hey There Mama, but there's not much of an instrumental there.
Oh, and what Short Skirts supposed to be an instrumental for 15 Big Ones?
The instrumental to Had to Phone Ya is fab!

01. It's A Beautiful Day (MiC)
02. Goin' On
03. Some Of Your Love
04. H.E.L.P. Is On The Way (GV) - I think it kinda fits with the slight nature of the album
05. Da Doo Ron Ron (MiC)
06. School Day (Ring! Ring! Goes The Bell) (10 Years Of Harmony)

Side 2
07. Keepin' The Summer Alive
08. Goin' To The Beach (MiC)
09. Oh Darlin' (Brian lead)
10. Sunshine
11. Why Don't They Let Us Fall In Love (MiC)
12. California Feelin' (MiC)

I also made a new cover for it, since I considered that miserable-ass original a big issue:

I also made a new cover for it, since I considered that miserable-ass original a big issue:

I've done a coupla these, I did a real good one for the Brian is Back era of 1976-77, but I don't have it with me now. I'll post it tomorrow. I do have my fanmix of All Summer Long; chronologically it may be a little off, but I for one don't care!:

SIDE ONE:
1. I Get Around
2. All Dressed Up for School
3. Be True to Your School (Single Mix)
4. Drive-In
5. Little Honda
6. All Summer Long
7. Do You Remember

SIDE TWO:
8. Carl's Big Chance
9. Wendy
10. Girls on the Beach
11. Hushabye
12. We'll Run Away
13. NOT SURE-ANY IDEAS?
14. Don't Back Down

Makes for a heck of an album!

All Dressed Up for School definitely goes on my version of Today! instead of Bull Session with the Big Daddy.

And, an alternative sequence for Sunflower. I think it flows better, both musically and lyrically. What do you think?

SIDE A

1. Add Some Music To Your Day
2. Got To Know The Woman
3. Slip On Through
4. Our Sweet Love
5. Forever
6. Deidre

SIDE B

7. Tears In The Morning
8. At My Window
9. Cool Cool Water
10. All I Wanna Do
11. This Whole World
12. It's About Time

superior sequencing imo!

Wow, that would have been a great Brian Wilson album! Basically The Beach Boys Love You Too...I like that Deep Purple, Shortenin' Bread, and You've Lost that Lovin Feeling are the only covers (not that I don't like Mony Mony or On Broadway), but these three covers are Brian Wilson (what should have been) signature solo covers. So much BW quirkiness on this album. I also like the use of the New England Waltz (from Get the Boot vol. 2 I assume.)

That's a heck of a solo album! I really like the usage of Concert Tonight into Someone to Love, it really steps up the album to a faster pace.

You're welcome!

I feel like if this was released instead of 20/20, we'd have another classic on our hands...sure, as Beach Boys fans, we believe every other album is a classic, but the record buying public that knows Pet Sounds, that takes the Rolling Stone Top 500 albums seriously (which includes PS, Sunflower, POB, Today!) would consider this a "lost classic" of the Beach Boys...inevitabley, this album would have done just as bad as 20/20 unfortunately, but I think, perhaps, present day fans of past great albums would call this the best thing to happen in between Smile and Sunflower, as an artistic statement.

That Break Away tracklist is brilliant! I've made a playlist in itunes of the "album" and I love it...almost! I see that there is a seltaeb1012002 remix of Lonely Days. I don't have this and I've looked all over for it. I have P.M 'd seltaeb but cos I'm dying to hear the remix of Lonely Days, does anybody have a MP3 file of it that could be passed my way, or a link, please?

Cheers

Shane

Severe disrespect being shown to "In The Parkin' Lot", one of their best hybrid rocker/sweet-wall-of-harmony songs. Omitted altogether, or lumped in with "filler crap" (sic).

That's nice. I've been meaning to do one like that for a while, though I  was going to use a couple of things from TLOS. Must get it finished some day.
