Title: One for the experts Which LP came first?
Post by: MBE on December 19, 2008, 12:34:50 AM
Wanted to know if Concert or Christmas came first? I have been seeing conflicting data.

Unless Concert is from Dec 26-31, then it would be before Christmas...:P

That took me a second but seriously does anyone know for sure?

The number should indicate that Xmas was first, but Keith Badman states the release dates as follows:Concert Oct 19, Xmas Nov 9th.
Xmas was recorded in July 64, Concert in Dec 63 and August 64 (according to Brad Elliott)

To my recollection they appeared in the stores virtually simultaneously. I wouldn't doubt that they shipped in unison....Concert in much bigger numbers.

Backing up what you said, the original ad's I found have them both. I guess I would go with Concert being pressed second though because of the serial number.

I think Badman is roughly right- I have an ad for the Concert album from Oct 26 1964 in a Madison paper (it was sold with the first issue of the Teen Set in many stores), whereas the earliest ads I have for the Christmas album are from Nov 26 (in a Reno paper).

It's just that I highly suspect Badman as a lone source which is why I asked this on here. Ian you have solid info here but I wish I could find out where Badman got his dates. Andrew's site has concert released second.

Not invariably accurate. Capitol 5610 "Caroline, No/Summer Means New Love" was released March 7 1966, while Capitol 5602 "Sloop John B/You're So Good To Me" was released a fortnight later.

I just dug out a book of old articles by Alan Clark. He has an ad for Xmas from 10-17 so the Concert LP must have come out a week or two after. Check it out there is a really interesting late 1963 interview with Brian. He already seems distressed about not being able to take care of himself as well as he had in High School. This is from 1993 but there is a number to order it they may still worl. 1-818-918-1293. Ask for Alan Lungstrum.

Cool then I am convinced Christmas came first.
